Trouble with getting lucid in general

Hi, I recently have gotten back into everything dreaming after not caring so much for a couple months. My main question is why can't I ever think in my dreams? I know a good way to get lucid is reality checks, but anytime I dream I don't have the ability to question if it is a dream and check anything. When I recall back on my dreams it just plays out almost as though they are in third person a majority of the time.

I also have a problem where 90% of my dreams are VERY clear and usually realistic. As in the scenarios are awfully normal and it seems like everyday things are happening, not like purple elephants flying around or other trippy things.

I guess I just want to know why my dreams don't seem that out of the ordinary, or why i'm never really "dreaming" but instead just think back on them when I wake up but I never feel that at one point I was dreaming. These factors just make it tough to lucid dream and are there any ways to help with these problems?

I would say that your clear and realistic dreams are an advantage. We all strive to have those.

To your first question - no ability to think and do RC in a dream.

Well, first you realize you are dreaming just out of the blue and then you do RC to confirm. How do you realize you dreaming? By practicing daytime awareness technique. Basically during day, no matter what you doing, couple of times, just stop doing what you doing and ask yourself 'wow, am I dreaming?" Your question have to be genuine, which you shouldn't have problem with, since your dreams are realistic. So, just question your reality. Pretty soon, you will start doing this in your dreams automatically, no thinking required:) Then you RC to make sure.

Question reality at everyday, normal activities, doesn't matter, what you do. Give it a try, happy dreams:)

What this tells me is just that you're not aware enough in daily life. In day-to-day life, do you do things robotically without thinking much about this/that/what you're doing? I'd really recommend just taking some time to be aware of your surroundings as gab suggests. If you are aiming for DILD, awareness is a really crucial element to that technique.
I understand 'awareness' is a really broad term, but it is something you will discover on your lucid journey.
