New to the world of Lucid Dreaming.

Hello there fellow Lucid Dreamers.
I'm very new to the Lucid Dreaming world, and I'm wondering about can you guys tell me some cool and interesting things that you have experienced, maybe some tips and tricks for recognizing dreams and stuff? :roll:
I'm also keeping a DJ in hand, been having some troubles getting them down in the book though, it feels like when I wake up the dream just slips away at once. Anyone had the similar problem? Thanks for all replies!

90% of lucid dreaming for me is realizing I'm in a damn dream. One word: Totem.

Now, I'm not talking Inception totem, which you use to recognize whether or not you're dreaming, although it can double as that if you pick the right one. What I mean is pick an object that you see often, be it your own hands, or doors in general, and whenever you see that object, simply question reality. I follow through a series of lucid-related questions every time I see my totem: Is this reality? How did I get here? Can I change it with my thoughts? Am I dreaming? Is there anything off with what just happened? Etc.

Now, my totem is my watch. Every time I see it I ask said questions. Furthermore, I've found that watches in general are a little wonky in the dream world. Digital watches usually read random symbols, whereas analogue watches rarely remain still. This is what I mean by having your totem double as your reality check. I started off using my hands. Whenever I would grasp an object or notice my hands, I would place them side by side, and simply count my fingers. I did this for about one week to no avail, until one day I counted 12, and realized I was in a dream.

Here are some tips. First, before you even fall asleep, say to yourself, aloud, I will remember my dreams when I wake in the morning, and truly mean it. Until you are lucid, your dreams are a product of your subconscious mind, and your subconscious mind is willing to listen to you if you are willing to acknowledge it and attempt communications.

Next, keep the journal and pen special. What I mean is, have a designated dream journal with no other uses, have a specific spot on your desk near your bed and keep it there, have the pen a special pen with no other purpose. What this will do is cement the act of journaling as a routine in your head, and so when you wake up and realize you just had a dream, your first thoughts will be in recreating it.

Third, try being your own narrator throughout the day. This will not only keep you conscious and help you in spotting deficiencies in the fabric of reality while dreaming, it will also engage the 'brain muscles' that turn not-logical not-language thoughts into logical language. Memory, especially written memory, is generally in words, whereas only a small fraction of experienced reality is in that form. By narrating your life throughout the day, you will be more attune with whats going on around you, which will aid in recognizing dreams, and you will be better equipped to translate incomprehensible thoughts into events and words.

Fourth, meditate. Helps with concentration, which is what you need for remember dreams.

Those are all easy things which have helped me in keeping a dream journal. Sweet dreams!

When you wake up, don't move and try to think of your dream. Then replay it in your head while you comment it with words. That way it stays in your memory for a while and you have a chance to get up and write it down.

Try to recognize micro-awakenings we all have at night at the end of each REM. That's the best time to write down your dreams, or at least a few keywords that will help you recall it in the morning.

Drinking water before bed and each time you wake up helps too.

There is several things you can do to help you recognize that you are dreaming.
