Strange noises and vibrations take over me before i sleep

Hi, everyone, i wonder if you guys can help me.

Im a 25 year old Male

This has been happening to me for almost 7 years( from what i can remember) now at least 6-8 times a month id say. Recently it has become allot worse and i would like to know whats going on.

Just before i fall asleep, i feel these weird vibrations very strong right through my body, then it feels as if my body is vibrating and is turning in a circular motion. This scares me and i feel i need to wake up. There is also this strange buzz sound almost like from a sci-fi movie when an alien ship is landing( just a comparison).

I then try to wake up because i feel endangered almost like if i continue letting these vibrations take over me something bad will happen to me, i then try and scream or speak but its like no voice coming out just mumble, i sometimes have to hold my girlfriends hand and i tell her when i squeeze wake me up and she does. This is the easiest way to wake up for me.

She says before/while im squeezing her hand my mouth is opened and im making a funny sound like a cry almost.
Sometimes this happens 4 or 5 times before i sleep normally. Id just find a different position each time..

Please can someone shed light on whats happening to me.

I can not give you accurate information as to what is happening. But, you could think about what ur worst fears are of what could happen. Most likely, you will not physically die if you let yourself go completely. As I think that is the way forward,letting go completely. Or atleast taking away fear from forming an obstruction.

The ego naturally makes excuses when it feels threatened by a higher entity. Nothing to worry about there. Those feelings are recognizable to me. I have the same fears. And i must admit, i have not let go completely. But i do feel like that is the goal. I have been struggling with these feelings for about a year. What has helped for me and the way I see my own experience is in terms of a Daimon. This concept is rather abstract and goes back to Plato and Socrates and quite possibly in other forms at an earlier time.

The way i make practical use of this is by speaking with my inner soul as an external being. I ask my body what it wants from me and why these things happen in the way they do. At first I thought it was an invasion but I am now beginning to realize that all of this is happening internally. Using the concept of the subconscious mind is perfectly fine. The agressive nature of my experience has lessened. My ego feels less in danger in letting go because it has a voice to talk to that acts as a voice of guidance and a voice that has proven to be trustworthy.

I think a Muse is the same concept. And loads of cultural references to this inner voice can be found across time. But the important thing is that all this is benign in nature and has a purpose, that is unknowable for the ego mind because it's intention is found in the unconscious mind. Which is basically everything of the mind that is not the ego.

I hope that makes sense or is helpful in one way or another. I am well aware that I am speculating on ur experience but if you want to ask for further inquiry or correct me that is alright. It might just be best to send me a PM though because it is quite likely that I will forget to check up on this thread after a few days of silence.

Hi there. What you are experiencing is perfectly harmless, and in fact the beginning of a lucid dream of the type WILD. It isn't supernatural and you are perfectly safe.

I was really happy to read your post, because you found just the right place to ask this question, and now you won't have to worry anymore. I know you're feeling that this is really scary and weird, but I can tell you what is going on with you, and what you can do with it, if you wish.

Let me tell you first, I know exactly what you are describing, because it happened to me regularly throughout my childhood and youth, and I didn't have the faintest idea what was going on. I did try to ask people, but nobody knew or understood what I was describing.

I felt the same sensations as you did, and I was terrified. I had two situations going on: The first would happen when I was about to wake up. I would feel myself lying in bed, but I was unable to move or speak. I could hear what was going on around me, but I couldn't alert anyone. This would usually happen during an afternoon nap on a couch. I would try to wake myself up or call for help, but nothing worked. Eventually, of course, I did wake up.

The second situation would often happen when I had been sleeping in during weekends, just lounging around in bed. I would suddenly feel powerful vibrations in my head, and I felt a pressure around my body, as if I was suffocating. I would fight it and wake up again. Sometimes this would repeat several times before I either just slipped into normal sleep, or gave up and got out of bed.

But every once in a while, I would pluck up the courage to just sink into those feelings, and it felt as if some unseen force pulled me into the bed. On these occasions, I would find myself in a dream... but I knew I was dreaming! This is what is called a lucid dream, and that is our main interest on these forums.

A lucid dream is simply a dream in which you are aware that you are dreaming. This page will explain it in more detail: What is a Lucid Dream?

There are basically two ways of entering such a dream. One is called a Dream Induced Lucid Dream or DILD. This means that you are in a normal dream, when you realize that you are dreaming. The other one is called Wake Initiated Lucid Dream or WILD. This means lying down and letting your body go to sleep while keeping your mind awake until you enter a dream. In this case you will immediately know that you are dreaming. You can read up on these two types of dreams here: Induction Techniques.

I want to reassure you once more that what you are feeling, as powerful as it may seem, is absolutely harmless. What you are feeling are completely normal sensations of your body going to sleep. This happens to you every night, but on most nights you won't feel it because your mind will already have dozed off. I wonder if you have had these experiences during afternoon naps, or perhaps in the middle of the night after having already slept for a few hours? Those of us who actively pursue WILD deliberately pick these times because they are the best times for letting your body sleep while your mind stays awake.

You certainly don't have to take my word for it. I would suggest that you look around the forums - especially the Lucid Dreaming sections - and also read people's Dream Journals, to see what this is all about and what we use it for. Once lucid, most of us employ various forms of Dream Control, enabling us to experience the dream world consciously while controlling it, a bit like a virtual reality game. And we do this for fun, for insight into ourselves, for spiritual reasons, and we even compete with each other... anything really. Because once you realize that you are in a dream created by your own mind, and that nothing can harm you, anything is possible!

So read up on it, mull it over, and see if this is something you would like to work on. And please keep asking questions. If you really don't want to try this, the I'm sure we can help you out with some relaxation techniques to make you fall asleep more gently. Everything she wrote out is accurate, and the fact that this happens to you on a regular basis is more of a gift than a curse.

This could very well end up becoming WILDs in the future.

A WILD is a Wake Induced Lucid Dream, and is a common technique people use on this forum.

WOW..... Thats actually the most interesting thing i have ever heard..... i have the chills now. I am surely going to pursue this and do much more research on it. What you said about having a nap during the day and then trying to fall asleep later is so true, this happened to me literally on Monday, i left work early went home at 10am i slept from 11am till, 3pm.... i went to my girlfriends house the same night and fell asleep on the couch and proceeded to bed when she woke me up.. it happened then as i jumped into bed the worst vibrations ever and loudest sounds coming through in a wavy sort of way... she told me through out the night i needed to be woken up..

Okay i am going to read up on these techniques now and see from there!

Once you let these vibrations take over you, will i then be able to control myself in my dreams or is it not that simple?
Another thing how common is this among people?

Yes, that would make sense. You probably went through the first dreamless stages of sleep on the couch and then went to bed with your awareness up, ready for a REM period. Your schedule seems unusual. Do you work night shifts?

Oh yes, I wanted to respond to this yesterday, but I had already written so much, and I didn't want to scare you away with an even bigger wall of text. It's actually quite clever of you to have worked out this way of letting your girlfriend know you need to wake up. Even though you normally won't be able to move while you sleep, it is actually possible to control your fingers and toes. So should you ever feel the need to come out of a dream, you can actually just wiggle your fingers or toes and tell yourself to wake up. But once you discover what's possible in your dreams, I'm sure you won't want to. Then you'll just want to make the dreams last longer. :D

Great! You know, normally we recommend that newcomers start out by practicing DILD, but since this is already going on, you might as well try WILD. You're already halfway there, since the hard part is being aware while you are falling asleep, and you seem to have a natural aptitude for that.

Yes, that's pretty much it. You will of course need to work on becoming good at is - as with any skill - but the times that you have thought, "I need to wake up!" - that was already a lucid dream. You may have felt yourself lying in bed, but what you were actually feeling was your "dream body", and your dream body is free from constraints of any kind. You will be able to get up from your bed, but just by imagining it, or telling yourself to. You can walk around. Perhaps you will find yourself in a dream version of your own home, but some things will be different. You can walk through walls, or just go outside anyway you feel like. Outside of your house you may find any kind of landscape. You can explore it any way you want, even by flying. You will meet people who are dream characters made up by your mind. You don't even have to visualize them, because your brain will still be working the way it creates a regular dream. But now you can change it. Dream control is a lot of fun, and we can help you with that too. Apart from the tutorials, people post new ideas all the time.

I don't know, I'm not sure if anyone knows, really. I think most people have the ability. A lot of people will be able to remember at least one instance where they knew they were dreaming. But most don't know that they can do things with that knowledge. We do know that children seem to do it naturally. More often than adults, they will just know that they are dreaming (DILD). From what I have read on this site, it also depends on the media coverage that lucid dreaming is getting in your area. I think one of our German users (StephL) said that it was much more common in Germany because they have had some documentaries on it. Elsewhere, I suppose that the movie Inception has had a good influence because it deals with a dramatized kind of LDing. But it is still relatively unknown, despite being scientifically proven. I think most people find out either by having a spontaneous LD, or - like you - by having some sort of problem related to sleep/dreams and researching it.

So now you have a few options... you could just think about what you have heard so far, and make a little plan for what you will do next time you find yourself in that situation. A little tip that took me far too long to discover: if you feel that you are having trouble getting out of bed, once you are lucid, try this: feel the mattress underneath you. Rub it with your fingertips. Or you can do it visually, just look at the wall next to you. Notice the colour and structure. This will make you aware of your dream body, and you will be able to get up easily. If all else fails, just roll out of bed, that's what I used to do when I got stuck :D. From there you can just go on an adventure. Everything goes on in your head, so you will be perfectly safe to explore. Sooner or later you will wake up - and then remember to write everything down immediately. Make a Dream Journal here on DV and tell us all about it. :)

Or you could read a WILD tutorial, but perhaps you won't even need it. It seems that all you need to do at this point is to realize that you are safe and already in a dream. It is also a very good idea to sign up for the Intro Class. If you create a workbook and post your progress, you will lots of help and support.

Just for further explanation, the visual parts of the brain are much smaller compared to the auditory and sensory parts of the brain. This could explain why these sounds and vibrations are so intense. I recommend researching binaural beats. For they produce a resonant pattern inside the brain that can be very useful for controlling this inner sound.

However, it is much more useful to be able to do this at will. When you are in this Vibratory state. Try controlling a second body or focusing on the sounds and vibrations. Simply put, forget about ur real body and focus on ur dream body. That is my advise.
I am not so knowledgable about the state but it could be useful to focus on the vibrations as your sensory vehicle for travel into whatever hell world you enter when you leave the waking world.

It helps for me to talk to my subconscious, it is a very common thing to do in lucid dreams. It is also very helpful as a guiding force or a dream control method to ask the subconscious to do things for you (I.e. ask the subconscious mind to take you to the moon and it usually works). It might be possible to get communication like this while you are awake as well.

Thanks to everyone esp Sibyline your insight has given me a new way of potentially experiencing 2 Completely different lives..

I will try and take over my dream the next time this happens to me and experience a lucid dream, i have shared this forum replies to my post and most of my friends and family wish they could have a lucid dream and are some what jealous to what i may (will) experience...

I have hardly been sleeping lately because of work etc so i am off this weekend Incl Friday tomorrow, i am gonna use this time to do some research and reading up more on techniques etc and hopefully have my 1st lucid dream that i actually take control off.

This has happened to me for years. I can only assume that it's lucid dreaming. It happens to me every time I try and sleep. All these weird feelings, sensations and noises while I'm dreaming and I'm still in control of my dreams. Sometimes it's the noises/sensations but without being in control.

For some, the transition (all the weird sounds, sensations) are as treasured as lucid dreams themselves. Enjoy!

Hi guys
Quick update on my weekend experience

On Saturday night after a few drinks eventually made my way to bed, after a few minutes 2 very strong vibrations hit me with an unusual sound that i cant really remember.
Anyway i wasn't afraid of these vibrations anymore and i felt so comfortable with it.
Well soon into it i knew i was dreaming but a very blurry image of me woke up from the bed and i felt as if i was going to fall face first onto the floor, i then walked to the room door all still being very blurry. There after i woke up and couldn't get back into it.

Last night, was different, i dreamt i was trying to lucid dream and saw myself in another bed seeing myself feeling these vibrations and i was seeing myself have a lucid dream if you know what i mean i felt like i was in control but not fully. I then woke up from that dream only to realize that it was a dream only to later wake up later to realize that was a dream... i hope this makes sense.

Im not sure what to make of these but im sure i will figure it out soon.

I will try and explain it properly the next time, i hope this makes sense to some of you..

Well, although the first one was short, it was definitely a lucid, so congratulations! :breakitdown:

Great that you felt comfortable with the sensations you were feeling. That really shows how much work you have put into understanding this. Isn't it amazing how the mind works?

You managed to get out of bed, and that's a huge step considering how it used to be like for you. Now you need to work on stabilizing the dream. Next time you get that blurriness, try to engage your senses. Go to the first thing you see and really look at it. Notice the colour and texture. Run your fingers across it. Tap your nails against it and listen to the sound it makes. Sniff it, lick it to see what it tastes like, no matter what it is (I licked the floor for stabilization last night :D). Now you will be fully immersed in the dream, and everything will be much more vivid and easier to navigate.

Then you seem to have had a series of false awakenings (FA). I don't really get those, at least not as a series, but a lot of people do. False awakenings are a solid dream sign. Think about what happened, so that next time it does, it will trigger true lucidity. If it turns out that you are prone to these, it would make sense for you to get used to do a reality check (RC) every time you wake up. Common RCs are looking at your hands, pinching your nose and trying to breathe, and levitating - but there are many others. These days I mostly take a few seconds to mentally question reality... does this seem real, and why? Once that becomes a habit, you will get DILDs too.

So... go ahead and update your lucid count, because you definitely had one! :goodjob:
