Hi Lion! Happy to see younger people interested in the practise of LDing :) Are you doing only one reality check per day? Reality checks are quite effective and they're best done multiple times during the day. If you manage to do one let's say every 15 minutes, then you still get to make a good 40. The more the better. It's also good to have a reliable reality check like the classic nose pinch, that hardly ever fails when done in the dream. Some advice when doing the reality check could be that you imagine what it would feel like to become lucid right now. Also during the reality check remembering what you did 10 minutes earlier and was it logical. ( You clearly remember drinking milk after you ate the sandwich, normal? Yes. / You remember driving a milk carton after you bought a giraffe, normal? No .) After you do the reality check you should never state: "I'm not dreaming", since that could potentially carry out into your dreams, thus making you lose the opportunity for a lucid dream. Instead go with : " This will work next time" and have faith in the statement. Remember not to make the reality checks " a blind habit", that you just pinch your nose without giving it a second thought. Concentrate properly for the 10-15 seconds when you're performing it. :) Once gotten used to and made a habit of, they should carry out into your dreams eventually and make you lucid.
It's good to do a reality check every time you wake up too. This is so you catch any false awakenings that you might have. A false awakening is a dream of waking up in your bed / somewhere else, and you think you have really woken up. Then when you do the reality check, it will work and you will become lucid!
You're also using mantra which is a powerful way of becoming lucid too. Mantras are based on suggestion and intention, like a phrase " I will become lucid." The more you believe into what you're repeating to yourself = the greater the chance you will remember it when you're in a dream. Try to remember the phrase the way you would try to remember this : I will remember to pick up milk on the way home from school.
Most lucid dreams occur after 4-6hours of sleep, because there is much more REM-sleep after the 4-6 hours. REM- sleep is where dreams happen. You could try to use the WBTB- technique. WBTB = Wake Back To Bed. Simply put it means that you wake up usually after 4-6 hours of sleep and then you stay up for a period of time. You can stay up 5 minutes or one hour, what ever time suits you the best. Then you go back to bed and you can repeat the mantra for an example. Now there is much more "dream-sleep"(REM- sleep) close by, and it is easier for the mantras to work.
You can also try other techniques and methods out there. There's lot to be found in the Attaining Lucidity - section of the forum that you might find helpful and better for you.
Good luck! :) Hope we get to read about your lucid adventures soon!
Awesome to see you trying to LD at 14. I am currently 15 (started when I was 12) and I haven't really noticed anybody similarly aged to me in this community. Good luck!
Reality Tests are usually done during the day or when just awakening from a lucid dream to assure one is not experiencing a false awakening, but doing reality tests right before going to sleep makes sense as well. The mantra is also a effective method. I would also suggest imagining yourself becoming lucid as vividly as possible, using both visual (see the experience) and tactile (feel the experience) modalities, this will impress on your unconscious mind and memory the intention of becoming lucid in the dream state. One should build a DILD procedure as you see fit, incorporating your favourite type of each method.
Maybe something like this. 1. write on a piece of paper "I will become lucid" several times. 2. When laying down repeat your desired mantra. 3. Imagine yourself vividly having a lucid dream experience. 4. Focus on and activate your throat chakra, it is located at the nap of the neck, this centre is associated in nearly every yogic (Buddhic, Hindu, Toaist) and esoteric system i'm aware of with out of body travel or lucid dreaming. 5. Imagine you are a sphere of consciousness, imagine yourself floating around your house, going out into the yard, and so on, really feel the sense of movement and separation from your physical body.
