Nightmares all the time, PLZ HELP.

I have been to multiple dream forums and so far no one can help but I will try here as well. Every night I have nightmares, and 99% of nights the nightmares are all I have all night. They vary, rarely repeating. It goes from the building I am in being on fire, to storms coming to snakes/ spiders, to various people/monsters trying to kill me, and everything in between. Every night I am being chased or what have you by something and I hate it, I don't know how to help it. I don't eat within 4 hours of bed, I don't take any caffiene period, I have tried different directional orientations for sleeping, tried different surfaces, tried different elevations, tried music on/off and different types, tried stress reducing methods. Does anyone have any hints? I am a Psych major and none of my Psych ppl here cna explain it either. Plz post or email me or whatever, or MSN, [email protected]. Thanks

Hmm, best way is to learn to be lucid so you can face your fears. If I am being chased I turn around and pull out a shotgun and shoot holes through whatever is chasing me. If being shot at or chased I enjoy them. It is a like being in an action movie or something like that. It is really fun. You should learn to enjoy some of them and start to defend yourself in them too. Even without being lucid you can change your dreams. You just have to know that when you are being chased you will fight back. Think this while you are awake and there is a chance you will in a dream.

The other day I was being chased by a ton of people with guns. I has a pistol. I ran by a ton of them then for whatever reason ran out into the street to get away. I got shot in the back with a shot gun and fell to the ground then woke up. What I thought when I woke up was, wtf, that was bullshit. I would have owned him. Anyways, I don't take dreams seriously so I enjoy them.

I can get lucid to the point of knowing it is a dream but I have troubles taking the next step of controlling it. In real life I stand up to my problems and face them, I never run, so I don't know where it stems from. Picture this though, you know you are in a dream, but it all still feels the same, and u just ran out of room, I sit there knowing whatever is coming for me is going to kill me, it doesnt matter that it is dream, and I know it is dream, my body and mind still feel as though I am dying for real, thats horrible, and thats not abnormal for me.

I get that feeling as I am about to splat to the ground after jumping off a cliff. Well, I have found that attacking the attacker in a dream is always the best way to go. You have to convince yourself outside of dreams to control the dreams the way you want to learn how to lucid dream better.

I have had dreams where I was all alone going through dark evil buildings being chased by things. I never end up getting killed though. I guess I look at them as more of an adventure. I guess all I can tell you is what worked for me. I never really had nightmares all the time, but I do fight back whenever I am being attacked now.

i completely reccomend LUCID DREAMING for this...once lucid you can wake yourself up, change the dream, or destroy whatever is trying to kill you, anything you want.

You say you can get lucid but have no control at all?

Do you have enough control to talk to the villians in your nightmare? Perhaps ask them why they are tormenting you?
The answers they give might hold the key.

Sometimes I can and sometimes I can't talk to them, last night it was a bunch of snakes coming at me and I as on a chair or something by a tree, talking to them did no good. Other times I have tried talking and asking what is going on and it did nothing for me, and yes other times I am just not able to speak. It is not uncommon for me to wake up still in the dream and run from my bed or punch my wall or something like that completely terrified. It isnt often I know it is a dream but when I do it doesnt seem to change anything because I remember not knowing how to change the dream or wake myself up anyways, as I remember this happend not long ago in a dream with ghosts after me.

I want to start off by saying I do agree with the everyone in regards to taking full control over your dreams by attaining Lucidity and controlling it. But I understand where you are coming from also You want them to stop completely right? If we can stop the Nightmares then you don't need to control anything at all. I may have the answers to your problem.

First what you need to take care of is not in your dreamstate but in your waking world. Things may be a little chaotic, kinda out of control in your waking life. If you are experiencing any problems with loved ones, or Work, school or feeling pressured for whatever reasons then utimately those issues are going to take form in your dreams. You may need to take time out for you and evaulate whats going on in your life and find a resoultion toward anything that you are not in favor of. Also it may be a little wise to minimize the amount of violent TV, videos, movies, or whatever that you are taking in, These factors hold more than you know in your subconsious state of thinking. If you are having relationship problems that could play out into nightmares, or even if you are not in a relationship but long to be in one then that would also have a great effect on your dreams. Think of all possible that you are not insync with and try to fix it. Good Luck!

Anytime I have bad dreams, I normally listen to pleasant music while I fall asleep, or meditate on the Word of God and pray. I've also recited scripture while falling asleep. These things have helped me tremendously.

I have had a bunch of terrifying dreams in the past, and they are so terrifying that I would wake up sweating so much and breathing so hard even my nostrols and mouth feel like air bottle necks. I know what it's like to be in nightmare. Although, there nothing like having one everynight.

The last one I had I became lucid for the first time (and I've only been lucid this once). The only thing I was able to do was to wake myself up. This thing was chasing after me to kill me. I tried everything to avoid being killed, but I was not successfull. When I realized I was dreaming, I brushed him off. I was telling him that I can get rid of him, and he was so confident that I couldn't. Then I just concentrated really hard on waking up, and told myself to wake up (I screamed at myself).

I've never felt this good in a nightmare. In fact, I would take a nightmare any time (bring it on!). I felt so strong when I realized I can wake myself up.

If you can't control your dreams or anything in them, then at least you know that you can control yourself. That should be easy if you remember it the next time you are in nightmare.

I was having nightmares almost every night also, which is what lead me to this websight. But someone told me once you figure out what the nightmares mean, you wont have them anymore. I would have nightmares about friends or my neices being hurt or killed and I would try calling the police but their line was busy. Or I couldnt yell for help, or people would walk by and I would yell for help but they would not see us. Basically I finally realized i felt like I never suceeded in the things I set out to do. That very night I stopped having nightmares. However, I am now learning how to LD just incase they ever come back. So far its been about a month I havent had a nightmare. We'll see... good luck

orrr... once you have them often enough :shakehead: , you become familiar with them and the fear goes away, hopefully replaced by better control :bluesmile:

I used to have several bad dreams per weak. this may sound corney but I always awoke with a sweat. which I attributed to the nightmare. However I realized that my actual room temperature was to damn hot. when I slept without both blankets I had less nightmares. The overheating may have induced it. But in regards to Lucid dreaming I stronly agree with everyone else. - Since I have learned lucid dreaming any nightmare I do have which is rare,I suggest like Seeker to confront the advesary or befriend it. You can't be heart in your dreams (pysically). Never run from an enemy.
Shadownightwings point is very valid as well. chances are you are having all these bad dreams for a reason. And the reason could be right in front of you - while your awake.

Howetzer you know what I think you've stumbled upon something, because I only get disturbing dreams when the room temperature is too hot. I wonder if anyone else gets that. But I think Hot Temperatures affect your Dreams.. thus turning them into disturbing dreams. Has anyone else experinenced Nightmares due to Hot Temperatures while alseep?

I've learned (somehow) to control body temp during dreams a little bit. I don't know how, but if I'm lucid enough I can will my temperature to go down if I'm too hot, or to go up if I am cold. I agree; there is something to that "heat theory" though. I have often woke up in a sweat after or during bad, or at least unpleasant dreams... Perhaps the uncomfortable feeling of being too hot gets amplified and turns into fear or frustrataion/anxiety?

Non-reoccurring consistant nightmares? Hmmm, I would suggest reading books, especially fiction and fantasy. Stay clear of the horror stories though. I used to have nightmares too until I started reading a lot. I'm not sure but there might be a connection...

I am going to sound like a real downer but I have nightmares all the time too, but mine are about a comepletely different thing. I haven't had much luck with LD's to stop the nightmare, but it helps take my mind off the nightmare the next time I fall asleep.

Well, I must say that I remember only 2 nightmares. One was about 2 years ago, and it was nothing, but being followed by some shadow.

Another one was not so long ago, I was in a dark room, and I felt a presence of evil. It tried to trick me, it's voice felt deceiving..
But I slowly backed out of the room, went to kitchen. I took 2 knifes, and went into a hall.
I felt/saw this thing approaching, but I felt confident, and maintained an attitude of "bring it on" as this thing approached closer, I woke up breathing rapidly...

I want to add that facing your fears is the best way to act. I had arachnophobia for a very long time. Then I was 17, my weird sister bought a tarantula and put it in her room. I was terrified. Eventually I decided to face the spider. Guess what happened? I lost my arachnophobia!

I will try to get rid of my fear of heights the same way...

That's why I enjoy sleeping in cold rooms :) with 3 blankets. blankets provide heat, and feeling of protection :)

well, if you ask for help in a lucid dreaming forum, obviously theyre gonna recommend lucid dreaming! (not that thats bad...)

but i think you should try hypnotism. and if you said you dont eat right before bed, i suggest that you DO eat right before bed.. who knows, maybe thats the problem

and also, it sounds like you have a dreamsign (nightmares) you should use that to help you become lucid.

Nightmares I have are never about a single being trying to kill me, they are always about an alien invasion, or some other apocaliptic situation. I guess that the root of them is my fear of death, and the fact that I like to have control over my life, and knowing that there are certain things that I cannot control.

I base my whole life, or my whole self, on my own ideology, my P.O.V. regarding the system we are in. When I think of all that, I feel its beyond me, it too big. I am over my head. Maybe this is related to this feeling, or to the fact that I know this world is based on chaos and that any minute there can be an earthquake, or a car can run me over, etc. Its just hard to contrive how little control we have over our lives, how anything could end everything we ever planned for ourselves, and everything we ever thought and believed.

The thing is I know this is probably the cause of it all, but I can't deal with it, unless I can finally, in the words of Tyler Durden, know, not fear that I am going to die. But for this I will have to achieve inmortality in the world of ideas. I am sure once this happens I will fell better about going gently into the goodnight.

When I think back to the first memory I can think of in life ,it may have been dreams.Nightmares were my first memories I can think of I had them until I was about 14.I still get a good fright here and there in a dream over the years..enough to keep the blood flowing
