major sleeping problem

Ok, lately i have been staying up really late/ really early or all night and i'll be alright, but then within an hour of when my classes start, i'll lay down and fall asleep and miss class, then eventually somebody will call me and wake me up and i will feel totally unable to leave and go to class because i am WIPED out. so i miss all of my classes and i wont get any sleep that night because i slept during the day. all of last week i was stuck in this cycle and i have no idea how many classes i missed. Now it's monday and it is starting to happen again. I got no sleep last night and made it up til the last 30 mins til class and passed out. So the cycle has already begun for this week. I know i can go drink a shit load of coffee or w/e but i don't want to become dependent on it. Tonight i'm gonna try some nyquil to go to sleep, but i am very caustious about that kind of stuff because i do not want to become dependent. This problem could probably just be seen as laziness, but i've never had this problem in my life before and for some reason on some nights, i just DO NOT go to sleep i just sit around doing stupid crap and i don't feel tired at all. It may be that i started staying up later and later and eventually my sleeping pattern just flipped.

Also i have lots of trouble waking from alarms lately, because i've sort of trained myself to automatically shut off the alarm and lay back down in bed without even thinking about getting up or hitting the snooze button. But it is alot easier for me to wake up from alarms when i have ear plugs in.........which makes no sense :? . I was just wondering if anybody here could help me out before these problems ruin my school and work.

I have had, and to some degree continue to have, this same type of problem. I'm afraid I don't have any sure-fire cures, but I do have some advice.

I think you should basically just make up your mind that you are going to go to bed at a decent hour when you know you have to be up at a certain time, regardless of whether or not you feel tired, or if you feel like doing "stupid crap" as you put it. Even if you just lie in bed awake, the rest that your body (and hopefully your mind) gets while you are relaxing in bed can go a long ways toward helping you feel more rested the next day.

I know it can be frustrating to just lie there not sleeping, but if you can make yourself do it I think you'll end up being at least a little more functional the next day, and at some point you may find yourself actually falling asleep even though you may not think you feel sleepy.

Maybe somebody else will have some better advice, but that's my $.02.

I had the same problem with alarms for a while (turning them off in my sleep). One easy solution is to move the alarm far enough away from your bed that you have to actually get up and walk.

Ive exactley the same problem, its like a cycle you cannt get out. Perhaps one day i will make the effort to stay awake all day, but inevitabley at some point i will fall asleep. Its froustrating man

I have not set my alarm at all now for over a year. How do I get up in time for work everyday? Well, when you have a steady schedule of having to get up at around the same time everyday, your mind will become conditioned to wake itself at that hour - no alarm needed!

I realize that being in college you have classes at all different times, and if you're slick (like me :D) you'll pick classes that don't start until late on Mondays and classes that end early on Fridays. Solution: get your ass up at the same time everyday regardless of whether you have class or not! Train your mind to sleep when it's time to sleep, and wake when its time to wake. You could break this pattern on weekends, of course, to drink and party - but not untill you get this flow goin.

Che, try layin off the mate for a bit in the evening! It's not caffeine, but it has mateine which has almost the identical chemical makeup of caffeine. I love the stuff and drink it myself, but I try not to have any past 9pm, or I'll be rollin on the bed eyes awake. :D
