Well any kind of stress, whether you consiously feel affected by it or not, can affect how well you sleep and concurrently your dreams as well. I've found that if I've been studying a lot, I have a tendency to run through facts or details or whatnot as I'm trying to go to bed. Do you feel physically tired at all or do you feel both mentally and pysically awake? If you don't feel physically tired, then exercise and a proper diet can help with that, and if you need to take it a step further then you can try sleep aids.
If you're just feeling mentally awake, you could try, as was mentioned, meditation or breathing exercises. Also, I've found that it sometimes helps to make a list of everything that you've recently been focusing on or need to remember and write it down. Once you've done that, make up your mind that you won't think about those things until the morning. And don't :) When you decide to go to bed, there's nothing more you can do about those things, so why dwell on them?
If you think it's a result of your desire to LD, I would recommend taking a break from it. Just go to sleep normally without thinking about lucid dreaming or dream recall and do this for a few days or a week just to kind of refresh yourself so you can come back fresh to it later.
I hope that this was helpful.

I think its a combination of all these things. I have eased up on the lucid dreaming attempts. And have stopped doing reality checks. I will resume on friday when exams finish. I feel very alert when I go to bed. I think that it is probably just from studying as well as knowing how dreaming works now.
