I think this "insomnia" happens as a result of a couple things. Sometimes sleep paralysis happens becuase our minds are so busy that our thoughts race on endlessly - so much so that it surpasses our body which gets to the point of physical exhaustion. This is one of the things that brings on sleep paralysis. If you are actually depressed and sleeping later and later it could just be worry and stress causing this. If you are REALLY not sleeping you may even get to the point where you start hallucinating - I say this from experience. Since you are experiencing this try to make the best of it . . .
Now to answer your question: SP is lucid sleeping, you are just in the early stages of sleep - meaning your body is asleep but you have not entered rem (dreaming) yet. I know SP can be awkward but try not to fight it. see if you can keep your mind with it long enough to enter a lucid dream.
