personally, i've never had a lucid dream. i've only been at it for about 9 days. but i have heard multiple times that it depends on the person. there is no way of telling how long your going to stay lucid, until it actually happens. after you continue with it, you progressively get longer and more controled dreams. for all anyone knows you could get a long, vivid, controlled LD your first time a round. :)
there are techniques to prolong your lucidity though. im sure there is some stuff about that on the tutorials page.

If you've never had a Lucid Dream before, you may become too excited and just wake up after realizing your dreaming. The more you get used to being in the dream and being Lucid, the longer you'll be able to stay in though.
I would think depends on the person for how long you stay in one. If you can keep your stabilization of the dream though, and not lose lucidity, you can stay in a Lucid Dream for as long as your REM period lasts.
Oh yeah, I can't seem to find a detailed explanation anywhere of what REM is. Is there a tutorial anywhere?

Another question, I never seem to get any dreams any night... it seems like one minute I'm still trying to fall asleep, then the next second my alarm is going off and it's 7 in the morning. Is this just because I have a really bad dream recall?
yeah, you dream every night.
The best thing to do, would be to set your alarm to go off about 100 minutes after falling asleep, so you can catch the end of the first REM period (or you can aim for later REM periods that have lasted longer so you can remember a longer dream). You just need to try and increase your Dream Recall. Start trying to create a dream journal, that should help focus your mind on learning to remember your dreams.
Another thing to do is, as soon as you wake up, don't move, and keep your eyes closed. Try to remember any part of your dream, even just a feeling, and start from there.

If I set my alarm for 11:30, my brother is probably gonna get really mad because we sleep in the same room. =\
I forget what the benefit of waking up at REM is. -goes to look again-
Waking up during an REM period allows you to wake up while your in the middle of a dream, and it makes it alot easier to recall it.

Sounds like it will work real well, but I just need a way to set an alarm without it waking up my brother. Maybe I could find a mini alarm somewhere that I shove in my ear. >_>
Well you can try this thing called Auto Suggestion.
Basically what that is, is before you go to sleep, tell yourself over and over that you will wake up after every dream, or that you will remember your dreams. Some poeple this works really well with (It has with me), others find it a very difficult method to use.
But until you find a way to do it with your alarm, I would suggest trying it.
Ipods are a little expensive, though. Maybe I could find one at the store with a headphone plug-in. Does such a thing exist?

One more question, how come I don't remember the last dream I had when I first wake up? Makes sense none.
Autosugestion did seem to work for me. At least since I stopped doing it I get alot less recall/LD's. The problem is, is that it is easy to forget to do... you don't have to be lazy and go off thinking about other stuff :)

Ah, and an LD can last from 1 second to... 30 minutes max? Maybe the true pro's can artificially make it even more.
My so far longest lucid-dream was close to 10 minutes if that's any help. Experienced people can get up to 30 minutes (that's what I've heard around here) and well yeah, some people even say that they can lucid dream for 2 days (dream time) when they sleep for 8 hours. It's quite tricky :s
All my lucid dreams were from 3-5 minutes. I heard that a guy was in a dream for 100 years, or something like that :).
Yeah, when you're asking the question of "how long a lucid dream can last," you gotta know that there are two different ways to answer this.
One, would be waking world time. The other would be dream time.
I've had a lucid dream last for what seemed like 45, uninterrupted, real-time, waking world minutes.
But I've also had lucids that jump around from scene to scene - moment to moment - day to night - because there are large chunks taken out of them, perceptively.

I have been Lucid Dreaming for about 4 weeks now (since reading about it) and have only had 8 lucid dreams, but...
1st = 1 min at most
2nd = 2 min
3rd = 5-8 min
4th = 1-3 min
5th = 1-3 min
6th = 3-8 min
7th = <1 min
8th = 5 min or more
In this short time I have learned a lot.
It doesn't seem like much but if I keep improving I should be able to reach 1 hour lucid dreams (not in real world time).
Remember this is just for me and you may be different.
Depends on how excited you are and how well you "will yourself into staying in the dream" which I didn't know about doing till yesterday :?
