Just try to remember any dreams that you have and record them, by writing them down or by voice recorder. It helps if you can remember any details, then try to think back from to what you were doing right before that, etc. I naturally wake up several times per night, and I write down whatever I was just dreaming about and anything else I can remember. You don't need to wake up every ninety minutes; however, it does help to wake up at least once or twice, preferably somewhat later in the night as you will dream with increasing frequency as the night goes on. You have to figure out what works best for you: drink a lot of water, set your alarm an hour early, or whatever you can think of to wake yourself up occasionally.
Dream recall is important both for recognizing dream signs, which you can use to tell yourself that you are dreaming, and so you don't forget any lucid dreams.
