I'm not too sure about how the sleep cycles work, but if I miss sleep will I skip the cycles that go along with it? For example, since I want to try WILDing tonight, but will be up late, is it possible to try a WILD after staying up until like 3am with no sleep and go directly into REM? Or do I need to get sleep before attempting a WILD (I know it is possible with no sleep at all beforehand, but it takes a long time and I am still a novice).
From the onset of sleep, as in, when you decide "okay, I'm going to go to bed for tonight," this is how it works:

It depends on how long you've been sleeping. So no, you cannot cheat by going to bed later.
Unless... You starve yourself from sleep entirely for over three days. Then your body's need of REM sleep is so great that you start hallucinating. Of course, this affects your body and mind in horrible ways, so I'd never suggest this as an induction technique!
It is correct that only a few days of sleep deprivation leads to psychosis (including hallucinations), but it is the lack of deep sleep that causes this and not the lack of REM sleep. Deep sleep is absolutely essential to your physical and mental health. Selective REM sleep deprivation has far less severe consequences, the most serious being irritability.Quote:
