It happens to me all the time. What it is your brain shifting from one demention to another. I think this is a normal thing. So don't worry about it! :o
Sometimes I feel like I fall into myself... I wake up w/an enormous twitch/jerk. It's scary as crap. I posted a topic on it but few people really responded  So I got no idea what it is really...
Yeah usually the twitch is accopanied by a feeling of a fall in your subconscious mind. (Maybe its your bodies reaction to thinking that you hit the pavement :D ) You know coming to an abrupt stop :P Anyways yeah it is scary and can be a pain but it is not dangerous unless it starts to become a regular event. If it does that you might want to check with your doc....I mentioned to them once that I had a problem with twitching at night when I was fallen/half asleep and they ran a crapload of tests.
But yeah, don't worry about it....unless it gets worse....oh and BTW it seems to be more noticeable for me anyways when I am stressed. So maybe y'all just need to chill out lol :)
It's probably synaptic firing (I know that happens when you pass out, but I'm not sure about dreaming)
What is this "synaptic firing?"Quote:

I don't think there is any weird explanation like "you're brain is shifting from a dimension to another."
That shit always happens to me everytime I feel stress. So I guess it's just a normal reaction due to stress, bleh.
I talked to some people about this and read online. It is thought that twitching or the jump feeling is caused by total body bracing & is caused by your body's trying to relax muscles that have been tight all day. I know that falling asleep on the couch can produce an awakening to sudden jerks or the 'falling into your body' feeling, maybe not going to bed in a relaxed manner can be associated with this. Im sure there are electrical misfires to your muscles, muscle spasms and so on to be responsible but im no doctor so ill only specualte.
Periodic limb movements of sleep are intermittent jerks of the legs or arms, which occur as the individual enters slow wave sleep, and can cause arousal from sleep. Other people have episodes in which their muscles fail to be paralyzed during REM sleep, and they act out their dreams (sleepwalking). This REM behavior disorder can also be very disruptive to a normal nights' sleep. Both disorders are more common in people with Parkinson's disease, and both can be treated with drugs that treat Parkinson's, or with an anti-epileptic drug called clonanzepam.
These periodic limb movements are the residual and incental synaptic firing throughout the corticospinal tract (motor pathway) as the bodies nervous system gradually enters into deep sleep, which causes a sort of "rush" throughout the muscles, creating a jerk of the limb.
Hope I've been enlightening.
Once again O'nus has pulled out another great answer. Surprisingly short, tho  Thanks. I was wondering the same thing.

*Twitch twitch*
Maybe true, although jerks/twitches such as this occur to a variety of people during all different states of brain activity and sleep isn't the main cause. As with muslces and twitching which can be from any type of electrical stimulation (of course withtin the correct conditions of Current and Voltage) cycles/transmission.Quote:

Thee are many forms of muscle twitching, jerks and tremors (shaking.)
I found a couple of examples but there are hundreds of conditions but only a few conditions for which they occur. There can be localised muslce twitching or just general muscle twitches that are random. I think like O'nus is describing some are from sleep, but i know of several times awakening from a dream after a fall and almost punching a hole through my wall ect...
Alkalosis-Blood alkalinity levels too high. Caused muscle twitching and jerking.
Myoclonus- Involuntary twitching of a muscle or group of muscles. Does include minoreties such as hiccups but a more severe case involves nerve damage.
Quote "Muscle twitching is the result of minor local muscle contractions or the uncontrollable twitching of a single muscle group served by a single motor nerve fiber or filament.
Muscle twitches are minor and often go unnoticed. Some are common and normal, while others indicate a neurologic disorder." Quote

sometimes i twitch all day, my thigh sometimes the thumb parts of my hands.... ect ect but not during sleep....
during my attempts or WILD, I found myself twitchin which didn't help...
or just sleep paralysis.Quote:

so you can't move around in sleep, while in REM cycles; while dreaming.
i have these..it usually haps if i take a nap on the couch. i feel like i've tripped or something. and i wake as i jerk to regain balance.
it only happens once every blue moon though.
I get this too :? Normally it'll be accompanied by tripping on something and falling down in a vague dream. I've heard of this feeling having something to do with astral projection, though I'm not sure...For the first second or so when this happens I'm still paralyzed and I'm flailing in the dream, and then my body wakes up and I jerk like that...Scary but funny at the same time :-PQuote:

It generally happens to me when I'm starting to fall asleep and then I jerk back into awareness.
Same here. Pretty wierd.Quote:
