thanks for the replies everyone! I just wanted to mention something that happened today. A song by lifehouse came on the radio and the lyrics said "lucid dreaming" and my mom said
"hey, alex! they just said lucid dreaming!" I guess she wasn't as skeptical as my dad. When she first heard about lucid dreaming, she just heard me talking to my friend about it and said
"wait... and you can do that?"
"yes"
"it's not anything bad is it?"
"no"
she just shrugged and said "alright."
I decided not to take it any further than answering yes or no questions
but it turned out okay. At least she's not thinking about sending me to a phsychiatrist or something, which is probably what my dad was thinking when I told him.
yea my skeptic brother was like "I think you just think you realize your dreaming but dont actualy realize..." or something like that haha, I'm like "dawgg....?"
yea it's wierd, I mean I agree that lucid dreams are pretty fantastic but why don't people think they're real?
Some people are just so close-minded and can't wrap their minds around the idea of lucidity. It's not really a general conversation between people and it's not very common for people to hear about so when they actually do hear about lucid, controlling dreams, reality checks, and dream journals they think it's weird. Say you were talking to your friend about lucid dreams and about your reality checks. If someone listened in on this conversation they would probaly think you 2 were crazy, right?
So if the person hasn't actually experienced it or isn't just open-minded enough, they won't believe it and just think your weird.
no kidding. my friend and I always just say "LD" instead of "lucid dream" because most of them will just think that I'm talking about "lincoln-douglass debate" which everyone calls "LD". And debate is kind of big at my school. Which is weird, because I'm pretty sure most people dont care about that kind of stuff
Yeah, I told my friend about it and he was like, "Yeah.... that's pretty cool...."
Ugg, it's hard to tell anybody for me. It's just a strange topic...
I've been lucky my brothers have all either expeirienced lucid dreams or obes so they know what I'm talking about when I talk about it.
My father dreams infrequently, and when he does he dreams in black and white (military/diplomat sort)... I didn't want to flip his world upside down so I kept my mouth shut when I was a kid. Sometimes its best just to keep quiet and seek out like minded individuals. :)
Such is the way of the world.
I haven't tried explaining this to too many people, but I figure there are three easy steps I can take to tell people about Lucid Dreaming.
1. Everybody has dreams. They're universal.
2. It can be a fun exercise to write down your dreams in a Dream Journal.
3. Most people experience a dream at some point when they are conscious of it being a dream. This is called being Lucid.
And the effect? You are more likely to become conscious within dreams if you keep a dream journal!
There. Is that so hard to understand for most people? You just haffa be careful of how you say things, that's all.
Or if you want the really quick version:
1. I dream.
2. I write them down.
3. I know I'm dreaming.
