i told an acquaintence. big mistake
I tell my family nothing of lucid dreaming or of my dream journal because I know they would think it's complete BS.
I brought it up with my sister and dad the other day when a dream I had came up and then my sister said something about nightmares she has. So I mention LDs as a way of overcoming them. She sounded interested. But what really knocked my socks off was when my Dad said he's experienced it before and those kind of dreams can be really fun. I didn't have a chance to say anything more as it was right as they were leaving the car.
So now I plan to give him my copy of "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming" once it arrives and tell him to read it because I know I won't be able to express the intense awesomeness of the topic myself. But I think he'll be open enough to give the book a chance, and then who knows.
I was so surprised because my mum whom I've previously mentioned it too, while accepting my interest in it, was utterly perplexed as to why anyone would want to have a lucid dream.
I really don't think the idea of a LD is simple ... at all. Yes, it is obvious to those who have had them, but explaining that to someone who never has? It reminds me of a planet in "Life, the Universe, and Everything" where nobody ever looked up because they didn't know up existed. Imagine explaining "up" to someone who only looks down.
And for validity, check any psychology textbook. According to mine "Occasionally, we may be sufficiently aware during a dream to wonder whether we are, in fact, dreaming. When experiencing such lucid dreams, some people are able to test their state of consciousness." That should help argue your case if you can find it in a college text book.
yea some people just can't believe what they haven't seen , kinda sad because thats what hope is all about. but its cool to tell people, what i do is trying to get to know more the person and see if he/she is open minded then you tell them some will believe it but wont care and some other will try to achieve some lucid dreams, it would be cool to dreamwalk your dad and turning him lucid
Ask him if he's really open-minded about it, or if he would rather just live with his preconceived assumption that it's "only a theory made by a scientist who wanted a name for himself."
If he's actually interested in being proven wrong, I can find you some stuff that you can get him to read and/or watch that would make him eat his words. :)
I've told a few friends and family members about lucid dreaming. All of them said either "Oh, I've had one of those before, they're kinda cool" or "I don't think I get it... but it sounds fun".
I guess that reactions really just vary by person...
My dad doesn't believe in it either.
Some people think that lucid dreaming is for weird people. Yes, some weird people do LD, but a lot of regular people do too.
I did a presentation in class about lucid dreaming.. the teacher was really interested, but I think thats mainly because shes interested in me lol :D
Theres nothing to 'believe' about lucid dreaming, lucid dreaming is a scientifical fact. It has been proven through scientifical experiments that it does exist. Just like gravity does exist.
Besides, the greatest minds in history did lucid dreaming! Did you know how Albert Einstein found out about his relativity theory? He did a WILD and he jumped on a sun-ray and rode it to the sun. Go read about it.
Nikola Tesla, who brought electricity to our civilization, who invented the radio, tons of other stuff you use daily, and basicly everything that has to do with electricity is based on his inventions.. guess what, he did it all through Lucid Dreaming. He was the master of lucid dreaming. He was able to make all his machines etc in his dreams, test them out in his dreams, and finally build them irl. Without Nikola Tesla, we wouldn't have electricity! If you read his autobiography, you will see that he really stresses his lucid dreaming experiences as his key to success in inventing. He saw sleeping/dreaming as an art.Quote:

I have told my parents and my dad believes it and he actually asked me about dreamviews. My mom on the other hand acts like she believes it and its interesting but i don't think she truly believes its real and possible.
I have told many friends and family members about it but the majority of them didn't find any interest in it or thought it was BS...its their loss. I give people two chances while explaining lucid dreaming. If they say thats stupid or something the first time, i try again. If they still aren't interested, its their loss.
What? Where did you get that fact from? And Tesla ... I have a really hard time believing that. Speaking of people being close minded ... sometimes it serves a purpose. Science and logic are based on skepticism, and right now I'm pretty skeptical that those are real facts.
I did a 12 minute speech in front of my class. Because it was a speech, they were forced to listen and couldn't interrupt me. I think that most people won't think that lucid dreaming is strange if you could just finish your entire explanation.
Yeah, I guess it's one of those things where actually experiencing it could be the only way to really understand it... for some people at least. I guess I'm lucky because although my family completely rejects the idea, the few friends that I've told are really open-minded about it. At least open-minded enough not to ridicule me for it. My friend emily, who has always seemed very interested, always listening to my stories and every trying it out herself, said that she believed me, but didn't exactly understand what it was like until she had actually done it.
I dont understand though how some people can say "wow that's awesome I wish I could do that!" But not even try it, even after I said that ANYONE can do it if they wanted to.
One of my friends acctualy believes in lucid dreams but he is scared of them others like my mum says ur all tripping. lol. I find only deep thinkers like dean and I aswell as some of u get it.
Deans another friend that left my school i see him rarely
EDIT: Its hard to convince some people because there very stubborn and say it doesn't no matter what evidence u throw at them so it looks like deep thinkers like us are the lucky ones.
Jesus Christ what is it with parents? How hard is it? Oh, duuuuuuuuhhhh... it's a dream, where you know you're dreaming! It's really not rocket science. Luckily my parents beleive me and my dad is fine with it but my mother just thinks it's weird. I've told them both about OBEs as well and my mum's all like, "Oh, well I've never heard of a single person who's experienced "vibrations" before" and I'm all like, "Well of course not, that's because they're chuffing asleep aren't they!". Even after all that I still know they both beleive me at least.
It makes me think, what if parents are like DCs? Put there to hide you from what the world is really like? Cos whenever you bring up a remotely intellectual topic they either fail to comprehend completely or just think it's BS!
I think we should tie this with astrology maybe. Maybe we should do a poll on the forums and see how many people have the same astrological sign. Mine is Capricorn.
All the different Astrology signs have different traits and are relatively accurate. Maybe this would also... I dunno have an effect on whether people are open-minded or not?
My dad thinks the same thing or along those lines but I kind of convinced him.
Forgot to add: While I did do that speech in front of my class, I have never talked to my parents about it. They knew I had a speech, but I never really said what it was going to be about. They know nothing of LD'ing. I will probably tell them sometime, but not right now. My brother wouldn't take it serious either.
Yea I can imagine people ignorance.
