I personally liked the movie very much. I know what point you are getting at here, but felt I needed to comment on it. I think the movie brings up this very theme - that they are using fear because of their "love" for their society. But, I think I disagree with you: The movie doesn't really promote that idea. The elder does kind of suggest thats why they did what they did, but the film merely raises that point. Is it ok to control people to keep them unfearful, even if fear is needed to do so? Is it really love? Or is it just another form of fascism? Is the end worth the means? Doesn't that contradict the whole purpose? I don't think the film really takes a position, rather it shows us an example, a metaphor. The movie also raises the issue of fear and to what extent we can be made fearful at the mere suggestion/possibility of unknown things.
No, it wasn't a scary movie, but that wasn't the purpose. I've read a lot about how people think the marketing was wrong, but let me ask you something - how much of what you wanted from the movie was based on your want/need to be scared/excited. The movie serves as a metaphor and a reflection of what we see as we peer out of our eyes.
Sorry, nothing really related to dreaming here, but I do love movies and just thought I would add my two cents.

I enjoyed the movie but I agree with WerBurN, this movie is advertised completely wrong. I think that's why a lot of people hated it: it's not a thriller/horror/gorey movie, it's a drama that's somewhat spooky and has with a twist, then another twist, then another :P . If you go expecting to be scared, you will not enjoy it.
SOMEWHAT SPOILER: And I understand why the critics didn't enjoy it: the major twist is far-fetched and somewhat funny if you think about it for a while. The elders to do that is childish and kindof like saying: BOO HOO, life sucks, let's start a new one. It's like they want to be God. Well, what happens when "The Village" is overpopulated and all the elders die? What will happen then? They will eventually go through the forbidden forest and when they reach the other side they will be lost and confused.
Though it is flawed in that sense I still enjoyed the movie and would recommended it to anyone who enjoyed "The Sixth Sense, Sings, Unbreakable (that was a litt
