From what I know so far... the REM stage of sleep is basically the only stage of sleep that is useful for your body and your mind (for lucid dreams! :D ). All the other stages of sleep are basically meant to guide you into REM sleep.
My question is, is it possible to train your mind somehow (through meditation or something) to "wire" your brain to go directly into REM sleep (thus skipping all the other stages)?

Yes, It is probably possible with years of meditation and practice.
However, all stages of sleep are required to stay healthy and sane. I don't have the link handy, but I seem to remember reading that theta and delta were important in replenishing key chemicals for the brain.
The other sleep stages are also required yes, the also replenish melotonin/serotonin and without them you cant even dream, so you need to sleep trough those stages,even if you could skip them, every now and then

Supposedly, your sodium/potassium ratio is adjusted/replenished when the brain is actively generating Theta waves.
Also from what I understand, it is during delta wave generation that the mind updates its long term memory. Studies have shown a decrease in memory function when volunteers have been delta deprived.

actually i think aL made the right decision. using this method, those browsing the forum for articles they are interested in--and not reading everything--will find this better. otherwise the topic would probably have been something obscure like "dream questions" and would have provided little insight as to the content.Quote:

Yes, its possible.
But the sleep stages are not within our conscious control. Its more likely depends on our body state and the environment.
