Lucidity and out of body exp.

Hello everyone,

Just kinda stumbled onto this site after having a crazy dream and doing some google searches. I read threw the whole main page on what lucid dreams are and how to have them. I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE CLAIM TO BE NATURALS AND ARE TROLLS. I want to start by saying I am no troll. I have been a part of a couple of message boards for a while and have a pretty good rep. on them.
So, after reading up on lucidity in dreams, I realized that I definatly have a higher than most dream recall. I am talking probably 2 dreams a night average that I can remember with great detail. I have been able to do this since I was very little. As far back as I can remember actually. I think part of the ability to remember my dreams is that I realy love dreaming and somtimes thats all I think about before sleeping. I have never kept a dream journal or anything but I am going to start.
After reading about DILD and what they are, I realized that I have had a couple sparaticly threw my years. Not every night as some seem to claim, but the ones that I have had are very vivid in my mind and I can remember them to this day even tho I havn't had one in probably a year, up until last night.
It happens when I am dreaming, for no reason at all I will suddenly realize that, I am dreaming! It's like it just hits me, I say to myself, I know I am dreaming, this isn't real. I know people use "reality checks" and such to remind themselves that they are dreaming but thats not how it happens to me. It's almost like I just KNOW that I am dreaming.
When this happens it's almost like I float backwards out of my body. Like I am watching myself act from about 5-10 feet, floating behind my body. I know that some of you won't belive me, but it realy happens and I am not sure what triggers it.

Is this what people call an "out of body expirience"?

I also have dreams were I am conciously aware that I am dreaming (there's no question in my mind it's a dream) But I don't have ANY control over whats happening around me or what I do and say, but I KNOW that I am dreaming. It's like I am watching T.V. and just kinda along for the ride.

Do you guys think that this is the begining of lucidity in my dreams?

I am definatly aware that I am dreaming, But have zero control.

What can be done to gain control over these dreams? I know it can be done because I have done it maybe a handfull of times in my life, But I am not sure what I did to gain control, and when I did, it didn't last for very long.

The reason that I am asking about all of this is because my whole life I have had dreams that realy bother me. They are not always nightmares (but when they are they are horrible and scare the HELL out of me until I wake up) but the dreams seem so real that when I wake up somtimes I have a hard time telling myself that it didn't realy happen. Or when I was little I would sometimes have a hard time telling the difference of a dream and somthing that realy happened. (I can remember telling mother one time about how me and a friend were fishing and I caught a turtle and now it was lunch time and I was hungry. Well it was 8:00AM and I had just woken up. I had to try realy hard to remember that it was a dream, not real and it was hard for me to grasp that.)
Also lately I have been having dreams about an ex-girlfriend. I havn't seen her for 4 years. When we broke up it was her choice and I found out she was cheating on me after we were engaged so it realy broke my heart. I don't want to see her ever and I want her out of my dreams so I think If I can control myself I can get some closure in my dreams and be done with this. Like I said, Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between reality and dreams. I know we all have those moments when we think "did that really happen, or was I dreaming?" well that happens to me a lot recently.

When you say you watch your body from 5-10 feet back, yes this definately sounds like an OBE.

All of my LD have been DILDS aswell although i believe im getting very close to being able to achieve WILDS now and gaining control for me has never been an issuse as soon as i realise im dreaming i do what i like.
Basically the method i use to control my dreams is simple and been 100% effective everytime for me.

All of my lucids have started as nightmares and as soon as i question the possibility of something happening to me i simply close my eyes ( in dream ) as shout as loud as i can " stop ".
Then i repeat in my head that its my dream and i control it, basically in your dream your god, what you says goes. When i open my eyes either everything has froze or i end up stood in an empty room with eluminated windows/walls. From that point i basically speak what i want to do or happen repeatedly untill it either appears or changes. At that point im fully lucid and have full control over evertyhing. When you do get to that point its important to stay calm or you may wake yourself up rapidy. Rubbing your hands together aggresively seems to work for many people in maintaining lucidity.

No such thing as an out-of-body experience. It's pseudoscience, and I don't advocate it. You dreamed that you were floating. Isn't that cool enough?

I agree with lee's advice on this one. One thing to clarify though, you said that you saw yourself from 5-10feet acting. Do you mean as in 3rd person because than that's just a dream and not an OBE. In an OBE, usually people see themselves still asleep in bed. While I am not 100% sure if an OBE is an LD or is infact the spiritual world, I recommend you head over to the Beyond Dreaming section where there are people who have had OBEs and can give you further help in achieving one if you desire. Plus you can read their experiences :)

Third person I guess is a better way to describe it. Like a 3rd person video game. never felt like I "left my body behind"

Control seem to be my issue at this point. Last night again I had some VERY vivid dreams, and once again I was aware that I was dreaming but couldn't get myself to act the way I wished.
I was fishing in Florida with my current girlfriend and I was standing in knee deep mud. I kept sitting in the mud and I don't know why, also I kept putting my fishing pole in the mud, somthing I would never do in real life because it cost over $100 :) I guess this is somthing that should trigger me to realize that its a full on dream but I seem to be having trouble making that connection.

After that I was riding in an elevator. Just kept going up, down, up, down, and so on. For what seemed like hours. The elevator was going at what seemed like warp speed too. At one point it was like I was outside the building, Watching the elevator go up and down knowing that I was inside the elevator.
Not really sure what all this means...

Almost every night I have Vivid dreams that I can remember with no problems, usualy I tell my girlfriend when I wake up and even she is surprised how much detail I can remember. Last night was the first night that I actually documented my dreams. I got 4 regular dreams from last night alone. I think If I write them all down I can find some reoccurring themes and maybe this will be the link that I need to gain control. Does that sound logical?

I have also always had lots of dreams with good dream recall, I have also had that 3rd person viewing that your mentioned.. it feels like your watching yourself through a T.V.

I remember I had a nightmare along time ago and i was watching myself running up a corridor towards myself, I then ran upto my eyes and started banging with my firsts on my eyes shouting "wake up, wake up" it was really weird and it's always stuck with me.

I've also had lots of dreams where I have realised that I am dreaming but I wouldn't class these as lucid because unitl you have a real (fully lucid and vivid) dream they just don't compare!!

I became fully lucid once after sleep paralysis and that was an entirely different thing, I felt completely aware of what was happening... all my surrounding sharpened up like I'd just changed graphics settings on a computer game from low to max it was crazy!! It lasted about 2 mins and i've never had one like it since but that was only a few months ago... I would like to have another one but I don't like SP lol!!

yup as stated above OBE's is the term people use to describe False Awakenings when they don't know about false awakenings or thing they've had a "real" experience. Calling a false awakening an OBE is as superstitious as saying "there is a small lady inside that television"

Completly disagree with this statement, judging what is possible and not possible through personal belief or opinion does not make fact...
Neither is it pseudoscience as ive read alot on OBE and noone has claimed or hinted it to be in anyway scientific.
I believe its possible and im not going to rule it out due to personal beliefs, neither should anyone else

I agree with Bigfan here aswell i jumped into saying it sounded like an OBE without properly clarifying what you meant.

That's your own opinion though and I'm sure that those who have had an OBE and compared it to their LDs would disagree with you completely :)

Sorry for digging this one up but is there anyone that can actually give evidence to state that an OBE is different to an LD?

I guess it would be fairly easy to prove. I.e. in an OBE your spirit apprently leaves your body and you can then travel and do things in the current physical world and as opposed to an LD where you are dreaming and create your own world to interact with. With that said, all someone would need to do is have an OBE and travel somewhere they have never been before, observe something and then return to there body and then go there physically to see if they were correct.

For example, you could have an OBE and travel to a road in your neighborhood that you've never been to, pick a random house and observe some detail of the house, I.e. the house number, colour of the house, roof and gate (and the street name of course) and then return there in physical form and see if what you saw in the OBE matches the physical experience.

Anyone out there willing to take up the experiment?

I suspect no one is ruling it out because of personal beliefs.
They are ruling it out because of the evidence (or lack of it).
In my view occams razor applies.
OBE's can readily be explained by lucid (or non-lucid) dreams.
It's no co-incident that the induction techniques for an OBE and a WILD
are identical.

Proving a succesful OBE is so stunningly simple (what colour scarf did I leave in the next room?) that the lack of evidence leads to a nearly overwhelming conclusion.

I don't have much time for the meaningless "prove it doesn't exist" argument.
Its a matter of probabilities.

Yes, but has anyone attempted to prove it with a simple "scarf test" or similar?

I agree, I think they are one and the same thing and that two schools of thought have developed around the same thing. However, I'd be interested if someone has actually tested it.
