-I have a journal but only get about 3 entries per week because i keep forgetting to do so until its too late. Currently I'm just writing in the notes on my phone, but I think switching to a physical journal would help me.

Regarding dream recall, I think you're up to a good start. What's important is knowing that dream recall is one of the fundamental practices required for both normal dreams as well as lds. Begin by journalling a bit every day and slowly work towards gathering more dream material. It can help keeping some paper near your bed or as you said, make it official and get a dream journal. :D
