So when I first attempted lucid dreaming I got the first couple fairly quickly, my first one even lasted for quite a while. But now it's been over a month and I have had basically one fleeting lucid dream, it lasted maybe 5 seconds. What can I do to help induce them? I've tried many different techniques and have been drinking apple juice for more vivid dreams in the hopes that it would help, but still no luck.
I guess what I'm asking is what is the best method for a newbie...?
Focus on dream recall and reality checks. When you are recalling dreams in your journal, try to remember the sensory details over just the plot. Is the scene light or dark? What kind of clothing are the DCs wearing? What color is their hair? What are you thinking and feeling? If you focus on remembering these details, your mind will learn to develop awareness within the dream.
Beyond that, I'd also suggest WBTB. For me, it's best if I wake up naturally from a dream after 6 hours of sleep, stay awake for 30 minutes, then back to bed.
Can anyone verify that the apple juice thing actually does anything? I read this somewhere else a while ago, but couldn't find anything about it.
And in answer to your question, there isn't really a best method. What's best for you might not work at all for someone else. When I first discovered lucid dreaming, I was quite intimidated by all the different techniques available, and opted for DILD, as it didn't involve me having to wake myself up throughout the night. However, I've recently discovered that WILDs seem like a better idea. Now I'm trying to find out the best times to try it.
But make sure that you've got the basics sorted, such as good recall. After that, just try experimenting until you find something that works for you.

Hello all I am new to all this well not the concept but actually trying to LD. I have had a dry spell as well! I had a very good LD 3 days after trying but it has been 3 weeks now and nothing. I was wondering if alcohol (even relatively small amounts) messes with your REM state and dream recall because that's the feeling I'm getting.
Patience is a key in lucid dreaming, sometimes if you are over anxious (like me when I started), the LD I might of had leaves just as quickly as it came, or I might not have one for a couple of weeks. If it has been a month, try taking a break from it, stop recording some dreams, and don't visit this site. I know it seems counter productive, but it worked for me. I would have full blown lucid dreams randomly (three times when at school!) when I wasn't trying to. Once you start having dreams consistently try to do different methods, I know the WBTB worked wonders when first starting, but now I only have to attempt a WILD, and 80% of the time I end up in an LD. Once you have your best method, start fine tuning it, such as when to attempt it, and where to attempt it. Start fine tuning your environment. For example when I take a nap around 1:30-3:00pm I like to keep a dim light on, with my fan on. Only one cover, and lay in a certain position. All of those little details help a whole lot, at least for me.
I believe any amount of any kind of toxins can mess with the natural order of your body's cycles. Alcohol could wake you up to use the bathroom in the middle of REM (mostly happens in between states of REM). Any kind of caffeine could keep you awake, and things like that.Quote:
