Another technique that you can try, is trying to fall asleep while your mind is still conscious. I've had amazing success with this, although not everyone does. Basically, you keep your body completely and utterly still. Lay like this. You will literally be able to feel your body fall asleep. Your body will send pains and itches at random. Ignore these. Your body is trying to test whether or not your brain is still awake. About 20 minutes into this you should start to see what is called hypnagogic imagery. And then progress to the rest of your sleep.
While you do this, count to keep your mind active with a mantra inbetween. Example: 1, I am dreaming, 2 I will remember my dreams, 3 I am dreaming, etc... Also repeating this mantra when you go to sleep can just help with reminding yourself to remember your dreams.
