New Guy Here
Hello Forums my name is Joseph and i recently read about lucid dreams on the web somewhere, and since reading what it is all about its just intrigued me to the point of almost obsession ( sorry for spelling not my best attribute). I started my Dream Journal 3 or 4 days ago because i read that a journal is a must to be able remember dreams and eventually become lucid. The reason i want to learn to lucid dream is for the most part put a stop to nightmares, after my stepdad died 2 and half years ago my dreams that i do remember are nightmares, ( not all but the most of them are ). After starting my dream journal i can honestly see a increase in my dream recall. I went from remembering maybe 1 dream every other month, to 2-4 in the last 3-4 days, though i can only remember 2 im sure i remember haveing more dreams just not what they were about. So here is what im asking help with from you pro dreamers...I know i shouldnt expect to become lucid so quickly but i figure some first hand help wouldnt hurt...The thing im having problem with is that i cant realize im dreaming, i keep taking everything in as reality even though my dreams jump and warp and stuff you know like dreams do, ive been doing reality checks in reality but not in my dreams besides the first night i decided to start my dream journal i kept dreaming i was doing reality checks and i was passing in my dreams so im kinda stumped as to how to become aware that im dreaming..any help is accepted and appreciated.

Hey Joseph, welcome to the forums!
I'm no expert, but I'll give you some pointers that helped me acheive my first few Lucids this week.
- The Dream Journal is an important start. Be sure to record as much as you remember upon waking, as they can vanish instantly no matter how vivid they may seem at the time. Once you can recall 1 deam a night you are in good shape.
- After you have 12 or so dreams recorded, read over your dreams and look for patterns (dreamsigns). These should be unique to you, and could be anything from colors, emotions, frequent characters etc. Find which dreamsigns occur the most frequently and begin to look for those in your waking life. Always do a reality check when you see a dreamsign, or anything that remotely seems out of place.
From there the tutorials on this sight will point you in the right direction with various techniques. DILD & MILD are a great place to start, as they form the foundation that teaches your mind to be constantly aware. The fact that you are on this sight is a GREAT first step, as motivation is the most important aspect of becoming lucid. The more you want it, the more likely it is to happen.
Also, I highly recommend reading the book "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming" by Dr. Stephen LaBerge.
I wish you the best of luck, and stick with it! I promise you will get there if you are dedicated, and you can address the nightmares that have troubled you.

when you do a reality check you should ask your self some question to figured out if you are dreaming or not. Personally, I ask my self: where am I ? who's with me ? what am I doing ? does it makes sens ? after that you do a reality check to be sure.
you should try some meditation to it helps the awareness.
