Hey Joseph, welcome to the forums!
I'm no expert, but I'll give you some pointers that helped me acheive my first few Lucids this week.
- The Dream Journal is an important start. Be sure to record as much as you remember upon waking, as they can vanish instantly no matter how vivid they may seem at the time. Once you can recall 1 deam a night you are in good shape.
- After you have 12 or so dreams recorded, read over your dreams and look for patterns (dreamsigns). These should be unique to you, and could be anything from colors, emotions, frequent characters etc. Find which dreamsigns occur the most frequently and begin to look for those in your waking life. Always do a reality check when you see a dreamsign, or anything that remotely seems out of place.
From there the tutorials on this sight will point you in the right direction with various techniques. DILD & MILD are a great place to start, as they form the foundation that teaches your mind to be constantly aware. The fact that you are on this sight is a GREAT first step, as motivation is the most important aspect of becoming lucid. The more you want it, the more likely it is to happen.
Also, I highly recommend reading the book "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming" by Dr. Stephen LaBerge.
I wish you the best of luck, and stick with it! I promise you will get there if you are dedicated, and you can address the nightmares that have troubled you.
