Synchronization between dreams and waking life

Hey-

I had a dream the other night:

In which I was hiding from a killer and he was walking right past my hiding space but then my phone alarm started going off in my pocket and he turned around and found me.

The odd thing was that the alarm was actually my alarm going off in real life to wake me up.

At first I didn't think too much about this because I have encountered similar situations but lately I have been wondering... how does this really happen?

I mean obviously I know I probably heard the alarm going off while I was still dreaming then it eventually woke me up, but I was just wondering if there was anything more behind this.

I really say this because I thought I learned in my psych class a few years ago that even long seeming dreams occur over a matter of seconds so if my dream was only a few seconds long, then since my dream-self's alarm was going off for a good 5-10 seconds before I woke up from the dream did I hear the very beginnings of the alarm while dreaming and "play" the full song for myself in my dream or what?

Lol I am SURE I'm over thinking this but I have heard "outside" noises a lot in my dreams and am curious to hear some more experienced peoples thoughts on the subject.

Its happened to me before, when i was younger. I dreamed i feel off the roof of a house and i really fell off my bed. talk about a fast way to wake up.

i unfortunately live about 100 feet from the train tracks and those assholes like to blast that fuckin horn everytime they go by. when i first moved in it woke me up every time, but nowadays i just sleep through it. i did my first dream journal this morning and realized that i started dreaming about the train while it was actually going by around 2am .

Hmmm. This happens to me too. I've heard my mom having a conversation as well as my alarm clock. IMO, I think the sync is parallel because when I wake up from outside noises, they continue from where I left off in the dream. Speaking of songs, I find it interesting that my dreams can play songs with correct lyrics, which I'm not even able to remember in waking life.

I've had this happen. My garage looked strangely flat and there was a tree on it that didn't belong there so I reach to grab my phone and I wake up reaching towards my phone to turn off my alarm.

So did you hear the phone or just woke to find yourself automatically reaching out towards it?

I had a really strange experience with that -- I had a hypnogogic image of a hand holding a kind of remote control, and then after a couple seconds the hand pressed a button, causing a car to beep (which was an actual car outside). I can only conclude that the events were somehow written to memory in the wrong order.

Haha, I had a similar incident like that too! In my dream I was handing my sister a cup of water to drink, about to spill it from falling, and I woke up with my arm in the air as I fell off the bed. xD

When I woke up I was already reaching for it. Though its likely that I heard it while I was still asleep and I reached as I was coming out of the dream so I don't remember hearing the alarm but I may have without remembering it.
