New to DreamViews and Lucid dreaming

Hi all! Just wanted to stop by and say hello. I've been perusing through the forums for an hour or so now. I've never had a lucid dream but look forward to working on that. :)

I've researched this before but never took the steps to start it until now. Excited!

Any suggestions as to what to read / try first from the very beginning of trying to get "on the track" of having lucid dreams...I know there's alot here to read and I can see myself getting overloaded reading it all.

Also - bear with me - can someone just give me a quick definition of the terms used here like DILD, WILD, etc...so that I don't have to look them up. :) Told ya I'm new.

Haha I was the same as you all the acronyms are confusing.
I would recomend trying to DILD then DEILD then WILD as they get more difficult in that order.
Read as much as you can, although there isnt much to it but experience.
Keep a Dream Journal = Improve your recall.

Set up a few tasks and imagine completing them in a dream. Just by wanting to complete them, you're increasing your chances of getting lucid. Try the different techniques and see which one suits you best and don't forget to start writing your dreams down in a Dream Journal. Not only is it for recall, but how else to remember all those amazing dreams you've if you don't have something to trigger the memories? Just like pictures :)

I've only recently started Lucid Dreaming so I can give you a few things to try that worked for me.

Firstly, it's important to be able to remember your dreams and be able to recall them accurately. If you can't do this you are likely to forget any Lucids that you might have :( The most common way of doing this is by writing them down in a dream journal. This can be a book or an online record (I believe you can keep a dream journal on Dreamviews) and it not only helps you remember dreams but can occasionally make interesting reading.

Once you have a decent dream recall you can start with a few of the techniques such as reality checking. Personally though, I believe I had my first Lucid by just reading/researching it a lot. It just gets stuck in your head. There are many other methods though such as WILD and DILD. A DILD is a Dream Induced Lucid Dream which is basically when you just realise you are dreaming and I believe it is the most common. A WILD is a Wake Induced Lucid Dream. It is when you go from being awake straight into a Lucid Dream and is generally considered to be harder. A great source of info on these methods and more can be found at the wiki page. The technique I learnt first was one called DEILD which is immensely useful when you start getting annoying 5 second Lucid Dreams. I recommend reading about that.

DREAM JOURNAL:
Like others said, keeping a detailed dream journal is one of the most important things you have to do to improve your recall. As soon as you wake up, don't let yourself get distracted by anything around you or any unrelated thoughts, and just go over the details of your dream in your mind. Write them down as soon as possible (you could just write them in point form and expand later). It's so easy to forget the details if you just jump out of bed and think about something else before remembering your dream.

REALITY CHECKS:
Get in the habit of doing regular reality checks (counting fingers, plugging your nose and trying to breathe through it, double-checking numbers to see if they stay constant, etc.). I used to think that the point was to try to get this habit to carry over into the dream world, and when you did a reality check there, you would become lucid... but the point of it is to get you to always be aware and constantly, genuinely question your surroundings. Usually you become lucid first, and THEN you do reality checks to help stabilize the dream.

DREAM SIGNS:
If you keep a dream journal for awhile or if you remember some of your dreams, you can start picking out things or people that you commonly see in your dreams. Whenever you see them in real life, train yourself to do a reality check. Hopefully this will also become a good reminder to question your surroundings.
