Another new member here.

Hello! Just another new member here, making the generic "new member" first post.

I came across this sight back in October '05, and I started a dream journal and started reality checking. But things came up, and it slipped to the back of my mind. Now I'm more serious about things, and joining the forum is my way of reminding myself that I'm committed.

I don't expect to make any progress for a week or so, because I've been going to sleep at a different time and am waiting to return to my normal schedule. To prep myself, I've been training myself to RC without a stimulus: I'm averaging 25-30 daily and hoping to increase that number.

As with all new members, I have some quick questions. First, which reality checks tend to be most effective for you? I know it's different for each person and that one check doesn't always work. I've tried some of the ideas in the tutorial such as pinching my nose, analyzing text, attempting to force my finger through the opposite palm, trying to hover, and doing some mental math. Secondly, what "defines" sleep parlalysis? Last night I had stayed in bed for about 20 minutes with my eyes closed when I felt a quick sideways vibration, followed by the chest-crushing sensation and a tingling sensation across my body, but I felt as if I could move if I cared to.

Anyways, I hope to stay committed and to enjoy my time in the forum.

For me, its the Pinch the Nose, that seems to make me lucid everytime I do it.

Sleep Paralysis can be experianced different by people, so its hard to really define.Some people just can't move, while others see things and hear things, some people feel heavy pressure on their chest like they can't breathe. Hey there and welcome to the forum!
Reality checks can be anything from that technique to another. Also, keeping a Dream Journal also helps as well. SP is when your body is asleep, but you are not, and what you describe sounds like it!

I had a thought that I've been trying out since my first post. I've heard lots of praise for the "pinch the nose and inhale" idea, but I've also noticed that it takes 10-15 seconds to feel out-of-breath. In an effort to reality check during the school day without being looked at funny, I realized that if one exhales instead, there should be a pressure buildup in one's ears. This only takes about two seconds, so I can sneak it in when nobody is looking. I've been trying this for a few days and it's become second nature, to the point where I can do it 40 or more times a day and be serious about it.

Now, I don't recommend blowing one's eardrums out, but if done gently I think this could be useful, at least to me. Any opinions?

Hey there, gamersince93. It's great to have you. Welcome to our community. It sounds like you are doing a great job in RCs and such. I like your variation on the nose-holding RC. It makes sense. I am glad that you plan on sticking around for awhile. :D Enjoy yourself.

Of course I plan on sticking around. I just didn't have anything good to say for a week after my first post.

The reality checks are going smooth; I just have a hard time waking up to write in my journal. I'm only remembering about four a week, but I've got a long weekend coming up, so I can set an alarm and wake up during the night without becoming sleep deprived. One thing I don't like about my dreams is that they tend to be in a third-person perspective, as if I don't have a dream body and I do not interact with my DCs. It's hard to do a reality check when I'm not doing diddly-squat.
