Any help and advice is always appreciated :)
Are you asking if you should divide the time between writing in a DJ (dream journal) and working on LD induction techniques? They both benefit each other, so work on both at the same time. The main reason you're encouraged to first start a DJ is two-fold. First, it allows you to build up your dream recall, because what good would an LD be if you couldn't recall it later? :P Secondly, it can give you the chance to try and figure out patterns that might be appearing in your dreams (dream signs), in order to try and recognize them the next time you're dreaming.
Anyway, they're not really separate, so I'd work on both. If you haven't already, the tutorials are a great place to start if you're looking for specific ideas. I'd take a look at the Reality Checks Tutorial and then at MILD or WBTB or something like that. And let us know if you have more questions :) You can also look around the site because there's a lot of information just floating out there!
Sweet lucid dreams!
