Argghh
So last night, I decided to commit to a WILD, seeing as I was in the perfect atmosphere to try one at the time. So after about an hour of laying in my bed, I feel the intense vibrations that one can receive before entering a dream, and I began to see intense HP (if thats the correct way to use the term). Then I felt my eyes moving rapidly and started to anticipate my first lucid since my accidental first one, but my eyes just snapped open. As quickly as I opened them I closed them, but I felt that after that it was a lost cause, and my body started to feel less heavy and I sat up, bummed.
I was wondering if this was a common aspect of this stage, and if one can still achieve the end-result of lucid dreaming even if they open their eyes at this point. Also, is there an average time for how long one experiences these vibrations, etc. before one gets into the dream?

I've heard of this happen several times before, and I have had WILDs suddenly stop before, too. I think that what might have happened is that you got too excited. It's much harder to enter a WILD if your mind is not relaxed.
As far as I know, there is not an average. I see people posting different times.

Wow that's unusual...
Maybe it's like an intese SP related vibration? People's eyes usually move around or twitch at this stage too, perhaps you just had the "toned up" version of this?
Sorry I can't of much help, I haven't experienced this type of stuff before.

I might be exaggerating on the "intensity" levels of the experience, I think it was partly shock due to the fact I was in my bed for over an hour and a half before it started to happen.

Did you go straight to bed and try WILD or use WBTB?

WILDs are notorious for your eyes opening. They just seem to do that when you enter REM. You could wear a mask to counter that, you don't want to hold them closed because then your body is receiving signals and won't go to sleep.
