Thanks to all the advice on this forum I have had my first lucid. It was a tad on the short side as I got a little excited when I realised what was going on. I guess my next objective is to learn who to maintain them? – anyone fancy pointing me in the right direction?
I also want to expand my reality checks, current ones include, checking the time on my digital watch or reading something. Any other recommendations would be most welcome.

maintaining LDs is something im getting used to over time. you learn that if you get too exited, you wake up... just make sure the first thing you do is stop, and look around so you can calm down. it makes the dream more vivid too.
The nose pinch and trying to breathe through your nose worked for me last night. You can do it without actually pinching your nose too by just closing off the airway to your nose near the back of your throat but pinching is preferable.

Generally you can just dream spin (spin in circles in the dream) or rub your hands and this increases clarity pretty well for most people. Other people have different techniques like yelling "increase clarity" or clapping their hands. Once you get experienced you won't even have to use these techniques an you'll be able to increase the clarity just by focusing your mind.

I know a couple people who say spinning just makes it worse, so generally its anything as long as you believe it will work. like putting on glasses, rubbing your eyes or focusing on one detail in your dream

The reality checks I usually do mostly involve looking at a clock and pinching my nose. Others I've heard about are looking at your hands to make sure they have the appropriate amount of fingers and trying to push one finger through the palm of your other hand.
To maintain stability/clarity of the dream I generally will spin like Silox suggested, or interact with my environment(focus on how everything looks, feels, etc.)
Unfortunately it did not long last at all. After I realised I was dreaming I jumped in the air and flew around for what seemed like no more that 20 seconds. After landing I could not take off again and that somehow made me think I was not dreaming anymore, the rest is history :-(

Hi. I focus on my surroundings. As soon as I realize it is a dream. I will narrate it to myself a little bit ( ie. the surroundings of that particular dream) so that I keep the separate awareness but the dream continues.

I was reading a book on LDs by Stephen LaBerge the other day and he reckons that it's the feeling of motion that solidifies the dream (which is why spinning works). So stuff like falling backwards works as well although a lot of them result in false awakenings. To battle that he suggests that while spinning you keep repeating "The next scene I see will be a dream" and so even if you do have a false awakening you can identify it as one and remain lucid.
Ok, the absolute most helpful reality check for me is to use telekinesis. It's the only thing I do anymore, and it's very quick. All you have to do is concentrate on a preferably small object and will it to move. Doing this through hand gestures works best for me. As soon as the object moves, I know I'm dreaming. That obviously would not happen in reality.
One thing I do is stare at my hand and focus on it. Nearly all of the time my hand gets clearer and I am able to stay in the dream for a while.

my first lucid dream i both focused on my hand and spun.
now i just rely on a digital clock to become lucid and focusing on something like a tree or my hands for clearness.
one time i focused on a tree and it was sooo uhh how do i put this well beautiful. everything was so clear and vivid and colorful. i didnt even care about doing the impossible because i was just happy to be like highly lucid. completely aware that my real body is asleep and when i moved, it just felt good to walk like i felt some kind of magical energy in every movement.
congradulations, now if you keep this up, you will be lucid more often like me. i use to average barely 1 or 2 a month and now i'm getting like 5 since i just started in october. so far about 19 lucids.
