Do people who are mentally disabled, or like a vegetable (that bad if you want) know they are in that condition? Or is it like they are basically asleep all there life? I mean are they sat there thinking to themselves, "i cant do nothing, im mentally disabled" or something?

I think it depends on the condition and the person.
I had 3 retarded uncles when I was growing up. One uncle, in particular, thought everyone else was retarded. He had a major speech problem and became angry when people couldn't understand what he was saying.
I had a half sister with spinabifida (sp) who was unable to walk and had the mentality of a 7 year old. Every now and then she would become depressed because she was different and unable to do the things other people did.
I think it differs with the condition. Some people are very far out of it mentally, so they can't completely understand that they're "different". Some people are fully able to understand this. That's my guess.
My mother works to rehabilitate people that suffered brain injuries, she says some of them remember how they were before their accident and get frustrated because they aren't able to function as well.
I am not mentally disabled.

Yeah... being borderline is probably one of the keys.
If my uncles (they were actually my Great Uncles) were born in even the 70's instead of the 30's, they would have had more of a shot at a more "normal" life. The Uncle with the speech problem (Eddie) had his motorcycle license (the test was read to him) and held a job at a Pepperoni Roll Shop/Bakery for many years.
My Uncle Hank, though.... eh... he had the mentality of a child/young teen and couldn't differentiate fact from fantasy.
My 3rd Uncle, Jimmy... well, he should have been put to sleep. He was a pervert/child molester who always had Chew running down his face.
My sister lived, against all odds, to be in her early 20's. She was happy most of the time, but had her moments.

I wonder when people with disabilities will collectively decide it's time to reclaim the word "retard" & start using it a positive manner?
