Love the pics!!
Do insects count? Those are about the only sort of wildlife I see now-a-days :chuckle:
Sure. How about the snake picture? That counts too. ;)
Nice Pics! Maybe I will take my bike and make some photos in forest

Oh, WOW, IC! Amazing pics! I wish I had checked in sooner!!!
I had a Dr's appointment today. I made my rounds around the car to check for cats. There were no cats, but there was another critter on my wheel. I shooed him over to the garage then went to my appointment.
I thought, for sure, he'd be gone by the time I got back (an hour+ later). But I looked around just in case.
Attachment 10170
And then I looked closer.
Attachment 10171
:smitten: I love that you can see raindrops on him. I got another pic of him actually looking at me.. but it was cut off weirdly and a little blurry
:(
**EDIT**
Please tell me y'all can see him  No one on FB knew what it was until I pointed it out. I blame cellphones :chuckle: Maybe the screen is too small for them to make him out. But then again, Miley was RIGHT behind me and STILL didn't know what my picture was of
Spoiler for See him now?:
Thank you!!
Spoiler for Wildlife:
Wow, lovely "show all"
Edot:
I mean Spoiler for Wildlife
Love all of them, IC... but I'm especially fond of those mushroom pics.
A few years ago (?) I broke down and spent a lot of money on a real book "Mushrooms of West Virginia and the Central Appalachians".
It was an obsession of mine for some time.
I love eating mushrooms and the idea of "living off the land". I bought the book with hopes of more easily identifying edible wild mushrooms.
I've always held fast to the practice of (after watching the animals and birds eat something) taking the teensiest of bites of something and noting any problems then adding more and more if each step was okay.
Thank goodness for google! With mushroom, toxins can build up FOR YEARS in a persons organs before finally disabling or killing them :panic:
Until I can afford a knowledgeable Nature Guide, I'm just going to admire their beauty
I don't know much about shrooms.

Wild deer. So Close to them that I started talking to them. :P
Spoiler for wild:
How precious! Are they in a safe place to talk to them? You don't want them to get to comfortable with you if there are other people nearby. A healthy amount of fear is good for their survival.
The bird looks like a wild turkey. We have those around here too... but I never see them too closely. The ones in these parts are very skittish. We had a flock with some babies in our yard last year. They were so adorable.
I think they were a little confused about why this human person is talking to them. They still come and yes they are wild turkeys.
https://i.imgur.com/5S0Go9N.gif
Doe one: "What the hell is that?"
(About me)
Doe two:" I don't know? Show yourself!! I think its one of those human things."
This was a couple of days before the video of the twins.
So cute. They're getting big.
I always talk to the deer in our yard.. they keep their distance though which I'm happy with. Being too friendly just means the neighbors can shoot them more easily once hunting season arrives :undecided:
A couple weeks ago, hubby and I were out driving to try to find the source of some smoke coming through his AC. We drove up a neighboring side road and a HUGE herd of deer were lounging in the yard. A big buck stood at attention straight away. There were several babies in the herd and I wanted a pic SO badly lol. (It was very dark out though)
Keep the pics coming. They're remarkable :smitten:

My grandmother told me that and I took it as gospel (that and that it was illegal to kill preying mantises which also isn't true :laughtillhurts:)
I took some more pictures today. I'll add them here later today or tomorrow. I have a few pathetic pics of 'shrooms and some unknown plant (weed). Maybe a couple other things...
Here they are:

I'm calling them an Alien Pod Plant
Will have to post pic later. DV keeps telling me certain pics fail. Maybe they're too large?
But no... the last one I tried was smaller and it failed too.
Perhaps just technical problems...
Why the heck is the image rotated weird lol...
Let's try this again...

Let's see if DV rotates this again

This stuff is neat. I always thought it was moss because it's all over the ground and soft to walk on.
When I looked closely, though, they look like tiny trees.
Attachment 10189
**EDIT**
I posted the pics to FB to ask if anyone knew what they were. They're Milkweed. I don't know how I've never noticed them before
Spoiler for Big pictures:
"Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it's home from the fields we go!!"
I went on the nature walk and saw the army of Turkeys in the field. Took some picture and then went on my way. Then When I went home I saw them in the woods.

Spoiler for WILDLIFE :
Such pretty colors! We're going straight from Summer to Winter :cackle: The majority of our leaves are still green yet it was snowing today (the snow didn't amount to anything, but still :chuckle:

Hehe, I think most deer have that De Niro attitude :cackle:
Is that bottom pic a flower? What sort?
Hubby and I went to the Farm today, to see a man about putting a new roof on the house there.
There was a deer in the distance and a deer carcass fairly close to it. I always thought deer avoid smells of death.
There were also Blue Jays and Cardinals flying around :smitten:
All of those were too far away to get pictures of :(
We went into the house, and then basement; and it was there that I saw something nightmares are made of:

Hubby was certain it was a toy :cackle:
It was a spider carcass, completely and perfectly covered in dust... and it was one of the coolest things I've ever seen lol
**EDIT**
Bah! DV rotated my pic again  (the first one)
From my FB because I'm too lazy to re-type :chuckle:
"This guy has been hanging out in my room for a couple of days. He's been on the outside of my mosquito net (which is around my bed), but he made his way to my desk today.
I was about to ask if anyone knew what it was, but a quick search revealed him to be an Assassin Bug (possibly even a Milkweed Assassin Bug lol). And they CAN bite if threatened."
Though the pics are weird and I'm not completely sure that's what he is, after all. I ended up moving him to the laundry room to hang out with all the spiders :laughtillhurts: He's probably only in here for warmth anyhow (though it's not all the cold just yet).
Attachment 10200
Spoiler for BIG:
That's a neat little plant. Shrub? Tree-to-be? (yeah, "sapling" escaped my vocabulary there for a moment :cackle:)
That deer is a master of the Side Eye :chuckle:
Beautiful snow fall.
We finally got a bit of a true dusting yesterday. I broke down and started using my crocheted cape. I had PT yesterday, so I wore shorts, tank tops and sandals with socks- with the hefty cape covering all of it. It was wonderful :laughtillhurts:

Nice shot there, Lang. There are new fawns in our yard every year. I think they feel more secure. The deer herd spends lots of time in our yard.
I had to run off a fox this morning just before I took that picture.......it was just before sunrise and he was across the road just watching.....and probably salivating. I hope mama moves that fawn when she comes back at dusk to feed him.

And then these guys were behind the house:
I'll try again in a moment... DV says it failed.
They're either mice or moles. I brought them inside because the kids were picking up debris behind the house. Once they were done, I moved them back.
The workers plowed the area the next day though :/ I hope their mom moved them before then!!

That is a Milk snake. Not Poisonous. They sometime get confused with rattlesnakes.
This is the picture that was taking today of the woodpeckers.. The are still there. My brother stupidly sawed down a tree in REAL LIFE. Then discovered there was a family of woodpecker in one of the holes in the tree, living in there. He came in and told us. Here's the kicker, the phone rings, that animated voice caller ID thing comes on and says, "It's Nature Calling"... I burst out laughing and did a Reality Check because of it.

Nicknamed the “soul mushroom” or the “king of mushrooms,” the reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has a long and storied history of medicinal use. ... The mushroom is called “lingzhi” in Chinese, which translates literally to “mushroom of immortality,” “divine mushroom,” or “magic fungus.”
It may be an acquired taste for some people but, there are some side effects that you may want to do some research before ingesting any part of it.

Yeah, I tried some of the Indian Pipe... It's bitter and a little spicy. Apparently, One person said that they had a lot of dreams but, to be honest, I would not count on that. There are a lot of factors that will cause someone to dream many dreams.
https://i.imgur.com/gkyrzrN.jpg
Hm. I would not want to eat those Indian Pipes. I'm sure you know this, but they turn into a black goo after a while. I had no idea they were even edible.
Lion's Mane is cool. Did you find it yourself? I don't find those in Florida. When I lived in Connecticut, they grew there. I think I saw one, once.
Here in South Florida, unless you go out to the woods (which is hard to do because everything is developed), you're only going to find Green Gills. And they are everywhere. I did find this once in my sister's yard.. check it out.
Attachment 10344
This is not the best picture, I'm not sure where the other ones are. When you cup it open, it turns hot pink, and smells like anise. It's a Raspberry Limbed Lepidella. It's pink where I scratched it.
It's edible but, I would not eat too much of it.
If you’re so lucky as to know where you might find this plant, take with you a mason jar of vodka, pick the plant, and put it in the vodka. The Natives used to use it's for beneficial properties.
After a relatively short period of time, you can use the vodka in small quantities to relieve pain, as you would use something as strong as morphine.
With apparently little or no side effects. Most certainly not the addiction and or inebriating effects of opiate-based pain relievers.
Cool find.
Wow. I never knew that. I figured it was just a very bad idea to ingest it because it is a lepidella. It is amazing what medicines we can get from mushrooms. Although I don't think I'm brave enough to try that method you describe. :) Hey I found my other pictures - here is one.
Attachment 10345
Turns out, this strange plant isn't a mushroom. It's a flower is indeed an angiosperm (flowering plant) and they are perennial wildflowers found throughout the United States. There are at least 3,000 known species of non-photosynthetic angiosperms. The leaves are small and scale-like. The plant is approximately 10-30 centimeters (4-12 inches) tall.
How does this plant obtain its nutrients if it does not contain chlorophyll? Indian pipes are mycoheterotrophic meaning they get their nutrients from an outside source; in this case fungus. The relationship between the Indian pipes and the fungi becomes more complicated because the fungus is a mycorrihizal. Mycorrihizal fungi are fungi that live symbiotically with trees and their roots. The Indian pipes take advantage of the symbiosis between mycorrihizal fungi and the tree by parasitizing the fungus. These relationships appear to be very host and species-specific. Monotropa uniflora forms a relationship with Russula and Lactarius species.
Generally, species of Monotropa are found in mature forests with moist thick leaf cover. These plants spend most of their lives underground and only come above ground to flower and disperse. These plants flower early summer to early autumn.
I feel a little calmer. *shrugs*
Whoops. I see what you mean, I thought you were talking about the Amanita I posted. I'm glad I didn't go grab one and try out your recipe with a potentially DEADLY mushroom :)
That's cool about the indian pipe - had no idea it was used for that. Yes I know what myrcorrihizal means, but thank you for this amazing description.

Thanks, what can I say? I just have so mushroom in my heart for them.
Hey since I know there are a few of us who like to photograph mushrooms, I thought I would post a link to a very awesome website:
https://mushroomobserver.org/
Basically, you add photographs to the site, you mark the location where you found it, you put in your field notes and best guess at identification, and then create the observation. After that, experienced mycologists will sometimes come in and help with identification. But even more importantly, it helps track the range and population of different species. So important, since we just don't know a lot about fungi and mushrooms, yet, not like we do plants and animals. Many species may be endangered, and we don't even know it. I know I have added several rarer species, and it's good to note where they still may be found.
Helping science, for the win!
(In other news, I have got to get Imgur. My photos are so small!)

Cocoplum (edible! It makes big grapes. It tastes like a blueberry skin on the outside, and the inside is a creamy mildly sweet flavor. These are not ripe).
https://i.imgur.com/tSTgFY2.jpg?1
Air Potato (poisonous! It's invasive, makes tons of "potatoes", but they are all bad bad bad)
https://i.imgur.com/FW3XD7G.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/02Mvlrfb.jpg
Rosary Pea (Absolutely DEADLY, invasive, growing everywhere. One time we were friends with a hiker who tried to make a necklace out of them, it burned her skin)

My favorite. Smilax / "Greenbrier". Edible, and a true survival food. Berries are edible but not really worth it. It makes green shoots that can be quite big, they taste like green beans apparently? Also - most important - the root is an edible and potato-like. It will often form root clusters from what I've learned, so it's a lot of food you can get. Can be ground into a flour, too.
https://i.imgur.com/HrdCej3.jpg?1Root is here:https://i.imgur.com/KOi9lTq.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/kmnloUG.jpg?1
Bidens pilosa (Blackjacks) This is a very safe and edible weed. All parts edible. It grows everywhere. If I were ever in a situation where I needed to find food in the wild, I would gather these up first.

Muscadine Grapes (edible :) )
https://i.imgur.com/OWDfhe4.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/oKMv9sh.jpg?1
This is so much fun. :) I took two cuttings (smilax and muscadine). I wonder if I can get them to grow on the fence.
My find today: Florida Cherries!!!
https://i.imgur.com/oND0Kfd.jpg?1https://i.imgur.com/lrbof2w.jpg?1
I can't believe how good they taste. I've never had them before, so it was a brand new fruit experience. They are amazing!! Very different to anything else I've ever tasted. It's just like a lucid dream where you try a new fruit.
https://i.imgur.com/rzTy8JK.jpg?1
When I first saw this, I was like "What???" It's a Bitter Melon. Also edible!:) (SEE EDIT BELOW) They are just growing wild on the fences by the sidewalk.
https://i.imgur.com/7VLGw9K.jpg?1
A wild Yucca tree, just hangin out in the jungle. I could dig this up and score a lot of edible roots (I won't, but I could!). Edit: Well. Apparently Yucca and Yuca are different. While this plant does have edible trunks, leaves, flowers, and edible fruits, the roots are not edible.

This was on the side of the road, in some bushes. I love these. They fall from the trees sometimes, and sometimes people cut them down and throw them away. I've come across piles before that people have thrown away, taken home 50+ coconuts (today just one). What I do is stick them in the fridge until they are icey cold, then puncture them with this augur thing I have. Then I just put a straw in it. Heaven! The leftover ones I've drained into plastic bottles and frozen for later. They are so yummy!

EDIT:
Just want to update. I looked into this "Balsam Apple" and apparently it's only edible when green and boiled twice. Once it turns orange it is TOXIC. Glad I did not eat it. I did research it when I got home first because I would not eat something I wasn't 100% sure on.
So if you do see one of these, just leave it alone. I probably wouldn't even bother with it when green unless I was truly starving.
My new baby:
https://i.imgur.com/UCj8LSs.jpg?1
It's a smilax cutting that I dipped in rooting hormone and planted. I hope it survives. I never grow anything, so I'm quite attached to my little baby here. He's been hanging out in a cup of water for a week now.
At Nana's house (my mother in law), I found this growing wild. It's on my bucket list of wild edibles to find:
https://i.imgur.com/tuat9kH.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/WkiseXR.jpg?1
This is Black Nightshade. It's a tricky plant because it's quite toxic when unripe, and one variant is considered deadly (Belladonna). However, this variant has edible berries when ripe.
After researching, I ... went ahead and tried 1 berry. (hehe!) It tastes amazing, for starters. Really loved the taste. Basically it tastes like a tomato, but a little sweet! Like a blueberry tomato! Never had anything like it in my life. Love love love.
This plant is a little risky (DON'T get it confused with Deadly Nightshade "Belladonna").
This is a dangerous hobby to be sure. It's also thrilling... Anyway, it's been several hours and I feel fine. :)
Really beautiful morning. This is what the field behind our house looks like:

(sorry for sneezing)
Found these the other day. Apparently the little potatoes (which are actually water storage sacs) are edible raw or cooked.
https://i.imgur.com/zfenkApb.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/Z9wczQ2b.jpg
It's a type of sword fern and apparently there are no look alikes to worry about. Still, I tried 1/2 of one raw and got a tummy ache. Think I will pass on these.
Last night I picked some Bidens pilosa (Black Jacks). It's a weed that grows everywhere and is edible. You have to cook it though because it does contain saponins (mild toxin). You can eat a little raw. I tried one raw leaf and it was tangy. A bit too flavorful. Then I cooked the rest. THEY WERE DELICIOUS! Like spinach. Maybe better. :)
https://i.imgur.com/yR0Zhogb.jpg
I only made a little though because it was a test run. I did not get sick.
Fast forward to today. I had a fun adventure.
Found some more Nightshade!
https://i.imgur.com/HXItft5b.jpg
And unripe Florida (Surinam) Cherries
https://i.imgur.com/d7U5ylGb.jpg
And Cabbage Palm berries. They have a weird taste, very unique, but I like it. I can't really describe it. But mostly, I am collecting them because I heard Native Americans would make a flour from the seeds. I want to try it.

BEST FIND. Total gold mine, if I can figure out where the root is. Biggest survival item to look for if society ever collapsed and the grocery stores closed, according to Green Deane. Why? Because this here my friends... is the Winged Yam. The Purple Potato. It's not only edible (when cooked), but it forms tubers that are 5-30 lbs!! Yes, up to 30 lbs!! According to Green Deane, it's common to find 10 lb ones.
https://i.imgur.com/fabZYxU.jpg?1
It was kind of hard to find because there's a very close look alike that is POISONOUS and all over (the Air Potato). You have to have the two leaves on the same stem side by side, not one leaf. There are other differences, too. Thrilled too have found it, but, when I went to try and dig up the root, I got bit by mosquitoes. I decided to come back another time with bug spray on. We'll see, it might be hard to find.
https://i.imgur.com/Ojgg0Xjb.jpg
Then I climbed over some rocks to get to the other side of this canal.

https://i.imgur.com/XlSNH11.jpg?1
I found the elusive White Cocoplum!! According to Green Deane, it's the rarest color.
https://i.imgur.com/k27OeAv.jpg?1
I found blue ones, too. I ate them for dessert :)

More Smilax.
https://i.imgur.com/QIJGTf1b.jpg
Stinking Passionflower fruit growing all over. I am not sure if I am ready to try this one yet, though it's supposedly edible. I looked inside.. it looked kind of weird.

https://i.imgur.com/yzeExYN.jpg?1
On my way home I found a big mango.
https://i.imgur.com/28VMaCG.jpg?1
It's a tree that's hanging over a fence, and the mango was on the ground on community property. I call that fair game! :)
https://i.imgur.com/aggqPwlb.jpg
Actually, other sources say it can reach up to 100 lbs. Although that's probably rare. And apparently taste just like Idaho potatoes.
Can't plant them here in South Florida. They are considered invasive, but they aren't really that bad. The bad one is the other one, Dioscorea bulbifera (the Air Potato). It literally grows everywhere, and is poisonous. They often grow right next to each other, even intertwining. So that's the problem, making sure I get the right root, and not the wrong one.
----
In other news I tried some Saw Palmetto berries today. First one got spit out immediately. It's tastes like a cross between stinking blue cheese and vomit. Second one I was able to eat no problem, knowing what I was getting into. Not exactly tasty, AT ALL, but, if I was starving, I would eat it. Apparently they are full of MCTs and really good stuff.
Sorry, back on topic. No picture right now.
Gotcha.

It's huge.

Cleaned up.
https://i.imgur.com/k3pIsTf.jpg?1
It's not purple, although when I cut it up I found 2 small streaks of purple-ish. The yam can also be white, apparently. So basically, when I went back in that dense jungle, I found the two types of air potato growing intertwined. I found my vine of D. alata (the very edible variety) and could not connect it to the root. I found this root a couple of feet away with a stem that had been cut. Because the two types are growing together, it could technically belong to the other type. However, the other type typically does not make roots in Florida. And when it does, they are typically baseball sized. The alata's root is much bigger. This is a big root. However, it's technically still within size range of either species. It is probably alata. But it could be bulbifera. I did research bulbifera and what I read says that the aerial tubers (the bubils) are poisonous. However, the root (NOT bubil) can be eaten if boiled twice with a change of water. The alata can be eaten with 1 boiling. Neither can be eaten raw.
My plan? I peeled it and cut it up. I am boiling the crap out of it. I am going to change the water and boil a second time. After that, I will take a tiny tiny taste. If it is bitter, I will throw it out. If it is not, I might take a tiny small nibble. And then see what happens. I don't really plan on eating any more than a tiny nibble, even if nothing happens. This was mostly a practice run.
Regardless, I AM THRILLED I got this sucker. I think I will be better at it in the future and definitely get a solid ID.
Cleaning up on my way home.

After some more hunting, I have finally found Dioscorea alata (Winged Yam / Purple Yam / Ube). There is no confusion now. The two are completely different and I see that now. So glad I found it. These are very safe edible tubers. I found a nice patch of them. I just took a couple small ones because I didn't have my shovel with me yesterday, and because I didn't want to harm the patch too much.
https://i.imgur.com/jnUmlrZ.jpg?1 Leaves are very different looking.

I appreciate this thread. Thanks to all contributers.
After mentioning in my beginner lucid dream journal that my life is pretty mundane, a curious thing happened. I closed the dining room curtains to keep the searing afternoon sun out. Then there came a repeated tapping at my window. My curtains are very thin. I peered through them to see an oriole sitting on the window ledge. It kept tapping away on the window. It flew to the middle window, did the same. Then to the third window and tapped some more. It that's not a reality check moment, I don't know what is. It flew away before I could get video of it. I did get a pic of it later though while it was sitting in a tree nearby. Going to try attach a pic.

The hitchhiker. This little critter came for a ride on a coffee run. I picked it off the mirror and placed it far into the grass near the coffee shop.
Kind of strange. My ears are full of heavy metal classics volume 7 while I'm posting pictures of cutesy wootsey little hitchhiking snails.
Sorry about the double. I tried to delete the larger version and attach a smaller but both are now stuck to the post.
:embarrassed:
Out foraging mushrooms and we crossed paths with this lovely creature. The one ear turned back makes me feel as if it's thinking, "Who are you and what are you doing in my living room?"
