Sooo, say you're really nervous about something (like, oh, I don't know, an upcoming interview.. nudge nudge...). What do you do to calm your nerves?? I need ideas, people!

Put my eyes into a state of left.
Neither open, nor shut, but left.
Works every time.
I dispassionately observe my nervous mind, knowing and accepting the nervousness as completely as I can until it passes, then next time it arises rinse and repeat. Alternately, look around for something that needs done. Do it. Look for something else.
Okay! I think I get what you mean Taosaur. I'll have to somehow merge that with Seis's suggestion. :P
There's someone staring at me from across the room. This is not helping.
Whenever i am in a nervous situation i tend to just reaffirm that everything will be okay, because 9 times out of 10 they are. Self confidence in being able to handle the situation will always help nerves.
Distractions are cool also, they can work wonders, just distract yourself using anything. But it is always best to face whatever it is, but if it was something like a job interview you may want to just picture yourself in there kicking arse, imagine you are in the job interview will full confidence.
Heres one, whenever i go for job interviews and i'm nervous, i always picture the interviewer naked, and in turn it makes me feel more comfortable because usually it makes me laugh inside my head, then it gives me a bit of a distraction/confidence boost.
Yeah, i may be crazy, but use your imagination, be creative!
You know that period of time where you're just waiting to do what you have to do and worrying about fucking up and you have all them butterflies in your stomach and all that? Just meditate instead.
i don't get so nervous and i hide it if i am, but i suppose you could try thinking about your whole life in general, the planet in general, the Universe etc. Basically try and make your current situation seem tiny and insignificant, so it's not so important in the long run( i know it is but i mean try to think like it isn't serious so you relax more).
Yea, think about the fact that there are stars 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 times the size of the earth, and 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 if those stars could fit in the Milky Way galaxy, so your problems are just peanuts to the universe...
Well as stupid as this sounds, try rehearsing the conversation in front of a mirror or atleast replay the potential questions in your head and answer them.
When you get that anxiety feeling in your stomach and feel so full of pressure and needing to release it, just breathe in and out slowly. Take deep breaths. Works alot and is very useful.
The best way I can put it is that you should put some effort into not seeming nervous. Be attentive to how you are acting, but don't obsess over it. Make sure you are looking the person(s) in the eye, and that you're not fidgeting. Treat them as if you were talking to a friend (albeit, maybe, a friend who warrants respect), or family member. I've actually had supervisors come to me in complete surprise that I didn't seem the least bit nervous - after being the center of attention at their conference table, interviewing for a job that was above and beyond anything I'd ever done - when, in reality, I was freaking out the whole time, internally. Haha.
The important thing is to not put too much pressure on yourself, if for no other reason than because it shows. Treat the situation as if it is routine. Of course you want to be on top of your game (especially if it's an interview), but being relaxed is even more important. You'll probably find that you think more clearly that way, as well.
The person who is interviewing you probably expects you to be nervous. So I am sure that it won't be that bad if you seem jittery or anxious.
I have two methods. One is genuflection. Its a weird habit I've picked up. Crossing myself changes my frame of mind and makes me feel protected for whats ahead.
The other is that if I know a situation is going to be long, drawn out and stressful I imagine a beautiful place and go to it when I need to.
For instance, during my last set of exams I imagined a lake in a stone circle in the forests. My knowledge and preparation was stored in the water. I knew it was there, and that I could draw from it. After the exam I would imagine letting the water seep into the ground, so that it could nourish the forest and not trouble me while I prepared for the next test. It worked well.
meditate :)
Being nervous is not a bad thing. It something that happens at the same time of feeling fear and desperation. Feeling nervous is only your body releasing adrenaline to help you. You don't have to fight your nervosism, you have to fight what makes you nervous. Whenever I'm up for something to the size of public speaking or etc, I actually like to feel nervous - it shows my body and mind both know I will be going through an important situation and both will do the best they can.
I used to participate in high level swimming competitions, used to feel extremely nervous and hated it. One day I went to a lower level competition, I didn't feel nervous and my performanced sucked. I was clearly better than all the rest at the time and I still didn't arrive in first place. From that day on, my view on being nervous changed a lot.
Realise nervosism is there to help you rather than to cause you problem, and it all feels better.
Try not to think about it and just get it over with ASAP.
Thanks guyzszsz. Hey Kromoh you make a really good point there. :D
Oh I completely forgot to give an update - Well the interview went okay, it wasn't the best OR the worst, so meh. I was pretty nervous but pacing about the room helped, and also looking in the mirror for some reason. (P.S. This was a phone interview. :P I suppose pacing and looking in the mirror wouldn't go over too well face-to-face.)
Yeah, I was gonna say checking yourself out in the mirror can help.
Glad we could be of help! :D

Just kidding , just kidding.......:P
I ridicule myself for being nervous and belittle my reason for nervousness as irrational... seems to work for me. Also works with fears. I managed to kill a spider all on my own today. :boogie:
