It's not okay. But it's a cultural acceptance that's prevalent among African American's today (mostly the youth), therefore it is what it is. Do you know what "taking the word back" means? Look it up. To deviate from that topic a bit though, - when a person creates a thread, the most vital part of that thread (in terms of view count and replies) is the title. Simple marketing and advertising will teach you that you have 3 - 5 seconds to capture a person's attention before they move along (being uninterested). O's thread title definitelycapturescaptured attention. And if you read his post you'll see there was no malicious intent behind his thread/thread title.
Now there's the difference. O, was making a point when creating this thread. You on the other hand are a bitter person whose griping about "DV double standards" therefore to lash out and perhaps try to convey some sort of point (whatever that may be) you said "s'up nigger". Not wise. Your intent was incredibly different from Oneironaut's. Had you of meant that statement/query? as a legitimate salutation, I believe the "er" would have been dropped and replaced by an "a".
Word to the wise: You admitted being new here. Welcome to dreamviews...let me tip you off. Tread lightly. While your point may have been valid...your "s'up nigger" pseudo salutation nullified it. Adding a bit more tact in your posts would help your DV social life. I cited that because you're not exactly established here yet, being a newbie and all.
We need to draw a line somewhere. To hell with purple people.
Unless they're suffocating. Then help them.
Anyway, somehow it's not surprising we still have these kinds of people in our society.
I know its not your style O, but you could've gotten some pay-back. Went to the Jukebox and played some strong Rap or Hip Hop, "ghetto beats" kinda music. Play on stereotypes sure, but I think they'd get the message.
Could've turned it into an all out music war over the jukebox.
I'm surprised at you, Exo! Purple people need love too!! :pissed:
Haha. Yeah, we talked about that. It would have been funny, but it was the last song that was played before our break time was up, and we had to go back up to work. If we'd have been there longer, and I knew exactly who'd played the song, I would have gone up to him laughing and said "That's a really cute song. Who's that by? I'm gonna have to remember to add that to my playlist!"Quote:

Really great stories, O. The first disgusted me, the second made me feel better again. Thanks for telling them.
I would be more upset at the bar if it was actually a song on the jukebox. It's interesting that the jukeboxes now-a-days (at least that one lol) can look up songs over the web and play them.
You and your friend both handled yourselves above admirably. Your second story was awesome. I'm glad you were able to clear things up for the man and that your friend didn't jump him right away lol
I have a broader [mis]understanding/definition regarding the offensive "n" word. In my own home, my dad would call us kids "stupid n**" from time to time. He defined the word as being "someone, of any color, who's a worthless lump on a log". So I loathe the word no matter who it's directed towards or "how" it's used.
The "pussification" of America?
I'd actually prefer if someone would re-enter the words "fuck" into my title, instead of making Onei edit his.
See the point is that everyone is treated equally.
I honestly understand the context in which "nigger" was used, and I'm not offended by it. But I"m saying why are we letting swear words in certain threads over others?
Don't change your thread title just because I said that. Honestly, if you changed mine back change yours back.
I really just like to swear alot.
I hate swearing and limit the time I spend around people who ALWAYS cuss (like my dad and brother *sigh*). It rubs off on me way too easily and I find the bad words obsessively echoing in my head  :?
I don't even like the term "wigger". My kids use it (when referring to white people who wear their pants half down their butt lol), and I'm always lecturing them about it.
Which gives me an idea for a thread......
Yes. The guardrails set up to keep the ignorant from hurting themselves.

Child's toys completely stripped of dangerous items. What happened to evolution? Whichever child eats the most glue doesn't grow up to have stupid children of his own.
People walking around with hand sanitizer, rendering their own immune system completely worthless and unpracticed.
Antibiotics which help people immediately, yet insure that years down the line we will most certainly die from some disease that has become immune to them.
You can't even spank children anymore. When I was in highschool I got paddled, quite a few times. It hurt like hell, and it made me think twice before smoking at school again.
I have also worked at schools and I tell you this: There is absolutely NOTHING that a teacher can do to stop a child from misbehaving. NOTHING!
Prove me wrong on that one.
"Here's another example of overprotection. You ever notice on the TV-news every time some guy with an AK47 strolls on to a school yard and kills three or four kids and a couple of teachers, the next day... the next day the school is overrun with counsellors, and psychiatrics, and grief counsellors, and trauma therapists trying to help the child cope. Shit, when I was in school, someone came to our school and killed three or four of us; we went right on with our arithmetic: "35 classmates minus 4... equals 31". We were tough." -George Carlin
Diet pills catering to people who refuse to just go take a walk every now and then.
Anti-smoking laws that are protecting those people who live in the most polluted places on earth, eat McDonald's everyday, and then complain that second hand smoke is KILLING them. The truth is that the danger caused by smoking cigarettes is between 2000 and 4000% higher than the secondhand smoke inhaled by those that don't smoke, and smokers are still surviving long enough to commit serial murder on those that don't. It's a minor risk.

Excellent question. Why? I'm sure that admins at all sites are aware that Google is watching and everything typed here will appear in a
Google search results list (don't believe it? click-it) but what good does it do to filter language SOME of the time?
That story makes my blood boil. What an absolute prick. I would not have gone up to the guy and said anything right away, but I would have found a song on that juke box about white trash or rednecks or something and played it and laughed while it was playing. I have a real problem with just letting stuff go.
It would have been hilarious if you had started making out with the girl while the song played and hugged her right when it ended.
By the way, WTF is that place doing with a song like that on their juke box?
Lmfao. The thought crossed our minds. If we'd had a little more time in there, before we had to go back to work, it would have happened. :chuckle:
Lmfao. That would have been great. Such a 'romantic' moment. Hehe.Quote:

Well, the way I see it, it's like this:
Most black folks will say it's the "taking back" of the word - the lessening of its derogatory sting by using it, albeit with a slightly different pronunciation. You could liken it to satire.
On one hand, you have the old, racial insult of white people calling black people "niggers," with intent. Whereas, on the other hand, you have the 'taking back' of the word - evolving from blacks saying "what's up, nigga'? haha" into more everyday phrases like 'my nigga', etc. It's a twist of an insult into the everyday use of the term, to give it less power than in the time where it was used primarily to insult maliciously.
As far as "not being allowed by whites", it has a lot to do with someone outside of the culture trying to include themselves in the culture by partaking in something so sacred. That stirs a lot of bad blood in the people who have descended from the culture in which the word's usage has been carried down inherently. The vast majority of white people who get 'upset' because they 'can't' say the word nigga' (let alone nigger) without inciting a riot, don't even want to say the word with respect to its intended meaning. They just want to say it because they don't think it's fair that they can't. They have no insight or respect toward the context in which it's meant. They just want to say it. Many of them just think it's cool to say it, so they want to emulate. The problem comes when someone from the culture in which the term is intrinsic comes in contact with someone who's just using it because it's 'cool' in pop culture.
One important thing to note, though, is that it's not always a problem when just any white person says it. There is a huge difference in sentiment between when a mid-to-upperclass white kid from the 'burbs walks around saying "sup, nigga" because he just happens to be into hip-hop music and is trying to show how 'down' he is, and when a 'lowerclass' white kid from the ghetto - who's actually spent his life surrounded by lowerclass black culture - says it. The latter is much more likely to be given a pass (among his immediate black friends), because he has some perspective. If that kid was to go out to some other neighborhood though, with people who don't know him, or that he grew up in that kind of lifestyle, there would probably be problems.
Does that clear it up a bit?
And now a word from our sponsors:

Lmfao. I love Clerks (I and II).
And Good Lord is Rosario hawt when she's pissed off.
yeah thanks for that O. I have a few black friends, i never say it, and i won't. i just say "brotha", to acknowledge in a friendly way.
First of all, those two were being total fucks.
Second, I'm always against any word being considered "bad." The whole idea of "curse words" is deplorable to me.
I don't think they are bad for using the word nigger, but for randomly without provocation deciding it was their business that your friend was with you, romantically or otherwise.
This is why we can't have nice things.
