How smart do you think that you are. I think that I am really smart. I dont want to sound arrogant but I am smart. I seen to know things that I lot of people dont know. I know some things and i dont know how. This is not based on any IQ test that you took.
well, it depends on who im being compared too. compared to a 2 year old, im a genius, but to a 22 year old top honors college student planning on entering the medical field, im stupid. so really, it depends on who you are surrounded by. if you have dumb friends, youll think youre smart even though you may actually be dumb. and if you have super intelligent friends, you may feel dumb, even though to many other people you may be highly intelligent. anyways, i know this doesnt measure your intelligence, but i tested my IQ on tickle.com and got 120 and then on iqtest.com and got 139, so those arent too accurate lol...
um i said above average.
because... I do well in school. But, sometimes i just lack common sense.

Regardless I don't think your level of intelligence is equal to your grammar or spelling abilities.. or how much you know... but rather your ability to learn.

i voted average as it realy depends on what subject its judged by ... if we are talking partical physics then im probably the dumbest person in the world but on the other hand if we are talking about something that i have spent alot of time understanding and working on then im very smart!
so as people excell in diffrent subjects and fail in overs its imposibal to say that your smarter than anyone or dumber unless you specify a subject after all someone may have a high iq and know the square rout of 758 but not know how to drive a car!

I always thought I was average but then I started working at walmart and I started seeing a ton of different people. Now I don't want to say most people who are working or shopping there are stupid, but most are below what I used to consider "average".

A tidbit from Psych 101: In the US, a highly individualistic culture, approximately 70% of the population thinks they are above average in a given trait/ability (an obvious statistical impossibility). In Japan, a very communally-oriented culture, 50% of the population thinks they are above average. So if you ask people from individualistic cultures (which dominate most of North America and Europe) whether they think they are of above average intelligence, expect about 20% to be wrong.
Intelligence is always uncertain, like you've all been saying. Basically, it's subjective since, say in the Middle Ages, you were a priest. To the pesantry and even nobles, you were a highly intelligent person. But today, an intelligent "token" would be, a physicist or a neural surgeon.
(P.S., to be honest, and this is a little bit off topic, I'm starting to notice that the system of education in America is becoming more nationalist as the years go by. Instead of focusing on actual education, we focus on letting the students score high. Sure we look good on an international basis, but where less than 2 percent of the population are getting the very best in education, the rest of the country does not. But this a very tricky topic in itself.)
Knowing stuff doesn't prove you are smart. It just means you are knowledgable. An IQ test is the closest thing that measures your actual intellegence.Quote:

However, even IQ tests are not completely non-biased and totally measures intellegence. So there's no real way to know how smart someone is. You can only get an estimate.
I say I'm above average, although I might be smarter, it all depends in what, subjects that I am learning in school, my way of thinking, how I am socially, etc. All these factors, but overall I think I'm just above average. Women evaluate men on several aspects, one of them is intellignece, but in this case they keep on picking these arrogant asshole jocks and not the guy who invented the atom bomb, so there are different kinds of intelligence.

Good point. I mean if you get an high mark in an IQ test that you know you just guessed on, you are likely to not debate it. (e.g: all those twelve year olds i meet that say "I HAVE AN IQ OF 140!!!" when in fact they just selected a bunch of random bullet points from the test, and because of their low age, the points got multipled. Alot. A smart person is somebody who, say, dosen't take an IQ test at it's face value.Quote:

Anyway, I suppose if I had to guess my intelligence, I suppose looking at me now - I am fourteen years old and capable of pulling off a stunt of saying I'm, say...19? But this is only text, and never portrays what one is really like. For example I never use the word "portray" in real life. Or make stupid sarcastic comments like these ones.
I'd say I was above average. By how much, I really don't know. I haven't got any Alberts Einsteins around to compare myself with.

I think it actually doesn't matter how smart you are, as long as you know your spelling and grammar well and you have a great vocabulary. because if you have all that then people THINK youre smart. ;D
I think that all you need to be considered smart is to have a good memory. I have noticed that many peaple that can recall trivial knowlege have the label of being smart. But they could quote you the text manual on how to change your tire & not be able to do it. So there is common sense smart and there is intuitive smart.
IQ tests are in question because they do not cover a broad range of areas.
Does anyone belong to mensa?
There are problems on their tests I could spend all day and never get the answer, while in other areas it comes very naturally.

If you think about it, a lot of the IQ tests base it on how your brain works. For example, two people buy a puzzle of 10,000 pieces.
The first guy uses "average" brain processing and problem solving skills and he completes the puzzle in a few months, using the box-image to help him a lot.
The second person processes the image on an absurdly complex problem solving pattern that's he just born with. He doesn't see 10,000 pieces with different shapes and pictures, he sees the completed image and can seperate the image to his liking. He completes the puzzle in about a week's time.
Now, not surprisingly, this carries into mathematics as well. We attribute numbers to values by memorization and association, whereas the genius, in his mind (perhaps without even realizing it) chooses such a simple path that he is able to organize and compute information at unhuman levels. You see '2', he sees a thousand different combination, patterns, and equations for two.
Also why these IQ are supposed to be timed, and you're asked to take your time to a reasonable pace.

Knowledge and intelligence are very different things. That's the key.
Anyone could spend a life time reading and memorizing books and become very knowledgable in the process. That doesn't necessarily mean that they are intelligent.
As for IQ tests, they do an excellent job of comparing you to the average if you are willing to pay for a good one. The free or very cheap IQ tests that you may find on the Internet are generally complete garbage. But if you are willing to part with some cash (somtimes hundreds of dollars) you will get a very accurate result (the reason that they are expensive is because of the extensive research that must go into them).
The "intelligence quotient" used to be just that, a quotient. It was found by dividing your "mental age" (determined by a series of tests) by your actual age, then multiplying by 100. Today however, the intelligence quotient is not a quotient at all. The value assigned to you is based on the average score of all people who take the test. A perfectly average score is always assigned the IQ of 100, and depending on how far you deviate from the average your score rises or falls accordingly.
Good IQ tests are also adapted to the specific population that is taking it. So if someone in Latvia takes an IQ tests, there wouldn't be a question about American Presidents, or some such thing. Cultural differences are accounted for,
I think the biggest problem with an IQ test, is that it is just that, a test..... there are many different types of learners/skills. Someone may be very smart but not able to take tests well.... making the result inaccurate.
Its better to be know more, than to have a higher iq. Having a higher iq may make it easier to learn stuff but if you dont bother to put your mind to good use, your just another moron. Being smart, and being intelligent are two different things. They normally go togather but you can be one and not the other.

If you have a higher IQ (as measured by a reputable test which takes into account cultural differences and differences in individuals' abilities to take certain types of written tests), you have a higher potential for understanding. Whether you apply yourself or not is a personality issue. By comparing a lazy person with a high IQ to a dedicated person with a lower IQ, you're adding in another variable and confounding the comparison. To clean it up, answer the following question: If you, having one personality, are given the choice of being the human equivalent of an encyclopedia full of separate facts but unable to assimilate new information to form a coherent understanding of your reality or being a super-computer with a blank hard drive but access to the world's databases, which would you choose?Quote:

Umm....the guy who invented the atom bomb (along with others, most notably Oppenheimer) was Mr. Albert Einstein, and it saved your ass. Consider what would've happened if Einstein hadn't developed the atom bomb for the US: the Germans would've gotten the technology first and I doubt Hitler would've hesitated before dropping a couple on London, Moscow, Washington, Ottawa, etc. (Ok, maybe not Ottawa, no one really cares about us Canadians. Although our role in the war is greatly unplayed in American history texts, according to your books, WWII didn't even start until 1941 after Pearl Harbour! Meanwhile, we had been fighting along with the British since 1939! Ignorant bastards...really we should all be thanking the Russians, they're the ones that actually won the war for us.)

Actually, the bomb was meant to end the war on the more physically brutal and supply-exausting front, or Japan. But it helped flex America's muscles, so we put fright into many countries. The downside comes when we have too many countries with nuclear weapons. It's like the "everyone needs a gun" scenario, where we have mass paranoia instead of a safer environment.
And I believe Einstein was opposed to his ideas used as weapons, so though he did the main research for the abstract concepts, Oppenheimer and a few others worked the physical and technical aspects of actually creating a workable bomb (how much plutonium/uranium to use in proportion to the initial chemical blast, and such).
I once saw a movie where Einstein and some other geezers helped Tim Robbins get a girl by making him seem like a genius. I'm sure Einstein wishes he could nuke whoever came up with that idea...

Hmm intelligence, it's seen as the make or break of society, i asked a friend of mine who has been a concrete worker for many years, he isn't very smart and he said this to me once i told him what i had been studying at college, "i have a degree in lifting heavy things."
It made me think of all the different attributes that make up a person, however much a person accels at something, most of the time that lack in another skill.
Great artists usually lack social skills, great mathmaticians are usually unorganised and eccentric (these facts are a general agreement amongst many famous criticts and biographers, my friends also agree so that means it must be true ;) )

On a side note, musicians are usually the more diverse 'problematic' bunch...Wagner was a racist and revolutionary but a genius nonetheless, Tchaikovsky was a nervous wreck, Mozart had more than his share of personality problems, etc, etc. But then again, I could be wrong. They don't boast geniuses a lot, mainly because we take their inventions for granted.

First off Peregrinus, I was thinking of people who are closer togather, not people on the opposite side of the scale. Secondly as you said yourself, you have a higher potential of understanding, thats it. So your example of being a super computer with access to the worlds database is wrong. It would be more like a super computer with the access to a 5th grade text book. Sure you could learn to understand things better but you don't, and that makes you stupid.
By the way you can learn to understand things better and you can raise your iq. In fact a lot of what school is about is learning to learn things better.
