what are you supposed to do if your dream characters ignore you?
What do you mean by ignore you.. they act like you're invisible or they simply refuse to speak to you?
I've had this happen and I usually move on in the dream to some other area. I suppose I should have stayed and figured out a way to make them pay attention to me but I didn't want to waste lucid dream time trying to interact with characters who obviously didn't want anything to do with me. Same as in real life, if someone ignores me I simply move on to more interesting things.
This is likely representative of your waking life. Do you feel that there is anyone in your waking life that will not respond to your attempts to reach them or communicate with them?
Try different approaches - don't do the same thing twice.
Also, if all fails, sometimes it is best to just give them space and wait for them to come to you. Do not let them always be in control - keep the ball in your court. Take your time and keep the door open to them.

well yeah, ok but why won't they just talk to me if i want them too?
surely everything in our dreams is controllable?
yes.
but are DCs supposed to be controllable or uncontrollable as they're controlled by our sub-conscious.
control.
so.. you're saying i basically need to talk to the real versions of my DCs?
yeah....................................
yes.
i guess you might say that but she's not THAT bad in real life.
So how bad is she? Are you having problems with her or trying to get her to know something about you?
I would guess one of two things:
- A girl you like; you cannot get her to see how much she means to you.
- Your mother; you cannot get her to understand how you feel about something.

having problems with a girl i like - amanda.
but i was more just wondering about DCs in general and what exactly controls them..
You control them.
Think about it:
- You are having problems with Amanda in waking life.
- When dreaming, how you feel is projected as an actual reality that you experience.
- Since you are having problems with Amanda, you will project this into the dream.
- Considering that you are unsure how to resolve the problem with Amanda, or how she would act in response to the resolution, you cannot control the DC version of her.
What is the problem you are having with her...?

well yeah ok but surely just like the whole lucid thing if you really genuinely believe something will happen and you expect it to then it should? (in dreams this is, obviously i can't control her in waking life.)
(but man how awesome would that be :P)
Of course, however, the fact that you do not think you can control her in waking life will affect how you feel about her in your dreams. Furthermore, perhaps you have respect for her and do not want to take away her free will to resist your "control" over her in your dreams. To analyze that, I think it may be the case that you want her to naturally come around and appreciate you without you having to desparately try and force her to do so.

well in waking life we lead quite separate lives. they just keep clashing every now and then. she's very independant, so i don't think i have any control at all in the real world.
and as for the dreams um... no?
it's not that i don't respect her because of it, but just i know i'm dreaming and i want to see her so i.. yeah. see?
mm we're friends and i guess interested in each other but it's one of those weird things where we've never actually gone out..
i asked her a bunch of times but she always seems to find a way of backing out of it at the last minute.
so basically she's interested, but not THAT interested.
and me? i'd love it if something did happen.
which is where the dreams are kind of cool. i get to see her without all the does she/doesn't she stuff.
shame the apparent solution can't be "stuff"-free......
i don't follow..?
