What makes you unique? How are you special?

Or maybe you're not special. Do you think you are far more mature, and intelligent than your acquaintances? For your age? Perhaps your family too. Do they not seem as smart now that you've grown up and even surpassed them intellectually.

Do you feel like you are "enlightened" to a degree more than most people?

Personally I think most people are useless and worthless. I say most because I know there is a handful of great people around (this forum is an example), but we must remind ourselves that 90% of the population doesn't even know what a forum is.

I agree with Meakel. But I don't want to stress myself or add burden to myself for trying to be better, more mature, or spiritual than others; as if there is some type of award for being "mature". I wouldn't look down on anything too. You can say that people are simple minded and waste there time with petty stuff while your trying to do things more meaningful, but at the same time they may think that the things you do are down right boring. Both points of view can be superior or inferior to each other. I plan to party while I'm young and settle down when I grow older.

Personally, most people are not unique. They aren't special. I'm not unique, I'm not special. Does it matter? Not much, there are way too many people to make me inherently unique at anything. Everyone would like to think they are unique.
It is human nature to think yourself better, smarter, etc than the people around you naturally.
Probably because your brain can't fully comprehend other peoples consciousness.
However, I find it very childish to consider oneself unique, special, or better than other people.
I do my best to suppress those kind of thoughtless feelings.

The truth is, no one is special or better or whatever. In the end, a life's a life.

I disagree, based off of the experiences I have had in my life, and the fact that, scientifically speaking, some people ARE more intelligent than others.

My point is that even if you are superior in some way (intelligence, etc),you still shouldn't walk around thinking yourself superior.
Though we are not born equal, we die that way.
Every life is equal, and I just think its a bad practice to allow yourself to walk around, looking down upon others.

Is what you mean to say that intelligence doesn't make you superior? Because as it stands, you're advocating self delusion. If you are superior, then why not think so?

Also, the differences in intelligence between yourself and a chimpanzee are entirely of a genetic nature. Saying that genetics doesn't influence intelligence is a mistake. As far as I know, the variation due to environment may outweigh the variation due to genetics but I don't think that that's been determined (or reached concensus) yet.

Not only that, but I am fully aware that even if I was "superior" to another in every way, it still does not make me a better person, as this requires there to be a universal, perfect judge of such things. If such a being does exist, surely he does not report his findings to us anyway.

Also, if your life-long environment consists of a room full of gasoline fumes, you are most likely not going to have the intelligence of the next guy which shows that the environment can surely play a part in intelligence. I think that genetics determine the overall potential of how well your brain can process information, however.

Well. That's pretty much what I was trying to say, only you're more eloquent about it.

I seem to be able to put myself in others shoes, see their point of view and how they feel better than people I know. It's handy for situations that need help, and understanding how people feel. Also let's me pick out lies and figure out what they're gonna do next.

I don't like this thread. Everyone is unique. But not at the same time.
It's mostly experiences that make us unique. And the small genetic differences.
So overall a very, very slight difference between people.

Then there's the bigger differences, like top athletes, artists, scientists etc.
I would call them unique. But even then, they are probably still only slightly different
to everyone else.

I've never met an animal (excluding humans) that didn't like me.
I'm good at a lot of things, but not great at any, so it seems.

I am unique in some ways, but not others. I am most likely the only person who is on dreamviews that has the same name as i do (full name) but i am not the only person who is named what i am named. It depends on the situation :confused:. I believe special is a matter of opinion, but no, as of right now i do not consider my self special.

Well I said all life forms are of equal importance. Everything is of equal importance although from our perspective it may not seem that way. It kind of depends on your definition of lower life form. Some humans I see. if not most. See humans as kind of more important than all other animals. as if we are so special and unique that we are more deserving of life and so on. yet we are all life forms. Because we are all life forms that is a limited view of kind of self importance. Everything is interdependent. To act against that is to act against the nature of your soul. some humans see other humans as lower life forms. Because of who they are, what they've done, what they look like even. And that is to condemn rather than to love. People do things because of their concept of self. Condemning someone doesn't change their concept of self. it changes nothing about the person. Sidenote: 'Unique' means that there is only one of it in existence, not simply that it's rare, which is the definition the word is often misapplied as.

Well there are many attributes about me that few people have. I have a scar, my eyes are blue, I don't wear makeup, I hate the sound of paper rubbing against carpet, I hate shopping, ... I could go on and on listing them.

I guess there are a few main ones that I feel distinguish me from others significantly, that kind of shape my perception of myself I suppose. The main one is that I'm thoughtful and often depressed. I think a lot about topics that are philosophical or just strange. My thoughts tend to veer off in odd directions and then fixate on something that most people probably wouldn't care about for a long time. It would surprise me to find out that most people's trains of thought tend to go in the same directions. I also think I have extremely good critical thinking skills. It often won't be obvious, since I lack a lot of factual knowledge and can't comprehend information as quickly as most people, but once I do, I'm able to solve problems much better than most people. A personality trait that distinguishes me is that I don't act like the majority of females do. It's hard to explain what I mean, there's just a quality about most females that I think I lack, and it's completely in the personality, not the appearance. About my life, I guess there are two main things that are odd about me. One is that I'm an atheist and have been in an online relationship with a Catholic for 8 years (met many times, plan to get married). The other is that I spent 5 months at an attitudinal healing center in Costa Rica. Anyone who's been aware of my presence on this forum has probably heard both of those already. I need to stop mentioning them so much. Oh, and I've been skydiving. That one's so recent I keep forgetting about it.

Ultimately, the main thing that I feel distinguishes me is closer to the first thing I mentioned. It's my way of thinking, the patterns of my mind, its way of coming to conclusions and of making decisions. That, I think, is how everyone really distinguishes themselves as unique.

It makes sense for everyone to think that their way of doing things is generally better than the average person's. If someone were to think that someone else was better at thinking, acting, etc. they would just begin to emulate the other person and again consider themselves superior.

When you get down to it, ever single aspect of a human being is completely unique in size and shape. Hair color, eyes color, nothing runs exactly the same. I heard about this through a share-holder in the company developing it. I can't even remember the name of the company but I'll ask him next time I talk to him. If you use google you may find something specific to what I'm talking about but most of the results I'm finding are related to tracking people using their brainwaves, which are also unique. They say it's to replace passwords but once they get your imprint they can triangulate your location the same way as a radio signal.

Einstein's brain was differently structured from most humans. Uniqueness exists, it's just rare because it's unique.

Plus self-promotion is so common in humans that thinking self is unique just helps blend that person into the rest of the crowd. Perhaps the truly unique ones are the ones who don't care about uniqueness and sees things for how they are.

Eh, wasn't too clear on that. To be a bit more specific, comparing to most other human brains, Einstein had a brain smaller than average, his parietal lobe (spacial and visual cognition, math) was about 15% wider, and patterns of ridges grooves had likely been involved with visualization towards physics. I am unique becuase I don't mind doing things that defy social norms and tradition. I do things that mos tpeople dont think of doing.

For example, what typical person would sleep in a closet or under their matress, making htemselves a human sandwhich" Well if so they wouldn't admit it to many people.

I dont want to give myself any credit for thinking that I am more intelligent, or am deeper, becuase even the dumbest or shallowest of people believe they are intelligent and deep becuase that is human nature. I dont know what goes on in the average persons head, so i cant say i am more philisophical or more intelligent. But i can say that I act much differently, becuase i can actually see the physical difference.

What's with this assumption that intelligence is the determining factor? Sure, 'intelligent' people (by this culture's ridiculously short-sighted definition) are more rare, it's statistically inevitable, but I'd wager that people on the other side of the bell-shaped curve (in other words, people deemed 'retarded') are equally as, if not far more, happy. That's what I'd put it all down to, enjoying who you are and making sure others can do the same.

The OP implies that those not at the same level of intelligence are worse people because of it, while, as well as it being unlikely to be their fault (be it genetics or environmental factors), everyone has the same worth and part to play in the world.

I think everyone, no-matter what their status, beliefs, race, gender, ect.. is unique in their own way. Everyone has something that they are talented at, or unique about them. However, it is up to each and every person to find their own uniqueness and believe in themselves.

Some time in the future, after the Android Uprising, we will come to realize that perfection is represented with a single prototype, which all androids will be exactingly replicated after and further, that everything we knew as "uniqueness" and "individuality" were just the particular configurations of flaws inherent to biological life forms we happened to be afflicted with and in our naivety came to identify with.

The word unique means that there is only one of them in the world. It isn't the same as rare. Taking this definition into account, the original question isn't very clear.

We're all unique; there are no two people who have dreamed the same dreams, who have come to the exact same conclusions from the sum of all of their knowledge (which is also unique to them alone.) There are stories that I've written that no one else has written, other childhood worlds imagined that no one but I will ever know or understand.

I think that makes us all pretty unique, and that's what I love; no two people have the exact same idea about what "God" is, no two people have ever imagined the same exact images while reading a book... It's quite strange, really, to think that no one will ever be able to "see" what I saw when I was in my imaginary world with my imaginary friends as a child. It's unique to me, which makes me unique.

As long as I am human I am just another tiny insignificant spec in the crowd, regardless of the meanings I put to myself.

While it may be true that most of us have more in common than we will ever have different, that does not make any one of us not unique. What truely makes a person unique is the sum total of several aspects: sequence of events in their life and how they perceive these events, particular tics, likes/dislikes, physical characteristics, and even more. No matter how similar two people are you will not find anyone 100% the same, even identical twins.

It is a real mystery how even identical twins do not perceive the same event the same way, and one that I will look forward to science figuring out.

As for me...I dont know too many other blond haired, green eyed engineers who compete in mixed martial arts but also has a strong attachment to folklore, fantasy novels and anime. You could probably find more people like me (bonus points if its a girl!), but then we would just keep getting more specific and eventually you would find differences. Whether it be views on religion, morals, family, whatever. In fact, even if they liked fantasy novels and anime our tastes within those genres may be completely different...but I think Ive made my point by now haha. There will always be something to distinguish you.

Of course, there may be some variance here and there. Some might have different world views than others. Psychologically and biologically, some may operate in slightly different ways. But, is this truly in anyway, unique. The answer is simple, no. Actually, anyone who believes that they are unique, are expressing a very common trait. Everyone wants to believe that they are more of "this or that."

I am not afraid to admit that a lot of the time, I believe that I am unique, when in fact this is just a delusional thought process. I believe, even most of the people who say that most "aren't unique", believe themselves to be unique. This is nothing to be ashamed of though, it is a common thought after all...
