My friend Desiree posted a note on facebook about giving up getting a career in television because she keeps getting rejected from places. Well here's a brilliant little comment a friend of hers posted:

"Desi, noooooooo we both have worked 2 hard 4 this and we WILL b on tv im havin a hard time 2, i think im gonna go back 2 school not @ niu but the illinois center 4 broadcastin it sounds really cool let me kno if u want info but i will not let u give up! if im not then u cant cmon co-anchor we will get through this successfully:)"

And this coming from a college graduate, not just some 14 year old who plays video games all day. Kill me, Jebus.

Whoa, whoa whoa, I happened to have been one of those kids who played video games all day, scarcely going out, and I never talked like THAT. I was taught from some guy off myspace (I know) that you should always use proper grammar and spelling or else your opinion will be considered completely worthless. It's more of the general teenage population that talks like that.

I dunno, the excerpt seemed like a personal communication, not prose for general consumption. If the two parties are comfortable with comminicating in that manner, then I don't see a problem.

It was colloquial. Deal with it.

Ugh, I hate stupid crap like that. I think that people that write like that anywhere other than chat rooms or text should be shot in the ass. Screw Korea, come teach english here :tongue:

the only thing that really bothered me about the comment was the run-on sentence factor. I don't mind the using numericals as prepositions or saying "b" instead of "be," but yeah...the run-on factor made it somewhat hard to understand

Yeah it's a problem because of all those things put together. Okay look, I'm okay with the following, because as the lovely Sindred said, it's just colloquial:

"where r u going"
"i'm going 2 the store b4 heading home"

That I can understand because I am NOT a nazi. But that little paragraph of hers makes her sound like a brain damaged pre-teen. All of this is important for that reason. If you want to be taken seriously, then you just cannot write like that. Let's be realistic here.

In general I have a very negative view of people that I've come to call the "youtube" crowd, because it's on youtube that I encounter the most egregious grammatical and spelling errs. It's not that I look for every spelling or grammar mistake, I make enough of them myself. My problem is with the people who don't even try. They go out of their way at every opportunity to use an acronym (u, 2, b4, etc). People exactly like the one who made that post.

I'm shocked by the number of high schoolers and college students who fall into this babble. The only real excuse is if English isn't their first language. Most of the time they type like a moron, seemingly, because its trendy. I remember in eighth grade whenever I spelled my words out on AIM the other person would ALWAYS ask me why I wrote things out. They made me feel like an idiot and called me names for doing it. Talk about retarded, eh? :P

I've been using proper punctuation and grammar since I was 12. :|

I once asked a girl why she types so crappily. She says it's to "save time." For all the time she saves (all those precious five seconds), I spend three times as long trying to figure out what the hell that vomit of letters is supposed to say.

I can understand when people just aren't good at spelling or grammar. Capitalization isn't a big deal either, but I don't think punctuation and actually spelling things out is too much to ask for. For the sanity of us all...

Other than that, I'd rather drink Dran-o before reading that again.

I try to write with proper spelling and grammer, but often incorporate slang into it the way I would talk in real life. Things like:
-I'mma go now
-You gonna do it?
-Aight

I say I'ma and gonna..but not 1337.

Infact, 1337 gets downgraded: 1336.

I never replace letters with numbers and symbols. Unless I'm using it to illustrate a point.

Am I the only one who doesn't see a problem with this?

Sure i see the errors and mistakes, but its just a form of communication.

Oh well.
Perhaps i don't value words as much as most people seem to...
