Firefox...Broken?

I think I broke my Firefox...

It doesn't let me use the Back/Forward, Refresh, or Stop buttons. The bookmark toolbar is also broken, it shows nothing. The navigation bar is broken too...It doesn't show the actual address for the site. It shows what I typed in there last. Currently, it says dreamviews.com, and it didn't fix the lack of "www."

Here's the thing: I have both rebooted, and reinstalled. What do I do know?

EDIT: Also, it keeps saying that a page is loading with the spinning circle on the tab, even when it's done loading.

EDIT2: Also, I'm on Ubuntu 8.10.

I had to set everything up again, but it works now. Thanks! But, why woul moving it to a different directory reset it? Even if I reinstalled it?

you've effectively deleted your preferences (renamed the .mozilla folder in your home folder)

This will reset all your preferences back to default
(when FF starts, and doesn't find a .mozilla config dir, it'll make a new, default one for you)

You can copy stuff over (bookmarks, etc.) from the renamed config folder to the new one
(use Ctrl+H to show hidden files/folders in nautilus)

Something in your preferences (what, I don't know) is mucking up FF
you could try to narrow it down, but to be honest it's easier to just let FF create a new default config dir

I wish, Google hasn't released it for Linux yet.

I use Chrome. I converted from FF mainly because Chrome is faster and looks a little nicer, but I sort of regret it now. I wish Chrome had extensions.

Chrome is good, but I still prefer Firefox because of the environment it allows you to create; my Firefox is 100% different from my mother's (which I set up).

there's an alpha for Chromium on Linux

It's in heavy development (and 32bit only at the moment)

Why don't you try Opera? It's clearly superior to all the other browsers. It just takes some customization time, you have to go around in the configs. The mouse gestures are very nice, along with Speed Dial, which, unlike Chrome's new tab page, allows you to choose what you want on it.

My Fire Fox has a problem too. I can't seem to get it to play videos that run on windows media player. I've downloaded the addon a few times yet still have no success. The addon doesn't even show up.

@ Dude with the girl avatar: Opera is good too' and it's lightweight. The addon system for FF is much better though. I use Opera on my Windows piece of crap. Other dude, maybe you don't have the codec to play the video.

I'm not a "dude with a girl avatar", that's me.

I prefer Opera because I don't like having to download all my features. And the overall speed is better on Opera, with Javascript.

Check FF 3.5
it's like lightning (got various JS refinements nabbed from chrome)

Opera's always going to be second best to FF, at least in my view, due to it's closed nature

No (or very (very) rarely - I have on a few occasions patched open source wireless drivers to allow packet injections)

Open source means peer review

Open source means the users of the software, not the authors, dictate the direction of a project
(ability to fork)

Open source means open discussion among developers and users
Actual debates on the features and direction of a project
(oh the horror, you can actually have a say in what happens)

Accurate bug tracking
Not being fobbed off - if there's a problem, it's documented, reviewed, AND FIXED out in the open

Etc. Etc. Etc

All Firefox code is open source
the only thing that's subject to copyright restrictions is the artwork

Show me the entire source code, then. Link me to it. All I've seen are bits and pieces.


Also, if the proprietary makers of Opera are doing the right thing, why does it matter if the users are doing it or not? Opera has a pretty good community going on in their forums, and if I wanted to suggest something, I could go there, and get the same result, if enough people want it.

I guess I was wrong, then. I've only seen the JS engine before. Either way, I'm not doing anything with it, so I don't care. There really isn't a difference between proprietary and FOSS to the end user, unless you can modify the source.
