The way he learned how to achieve this state deliberately was by sitting in a chair and holding a rock over a tin bucket. Every time he'd fall asleep unconsciously, the rock would fall in the bucket.. waking him up to repeat the exercise. Eventually, he learned to go into his sleep state consciously and work more efficiently.
The same technique can be applied here.. albeit in a more relaxing and comfortable manner. Teaching ones self to fall asleep consciously requires discipline, however, - it can be done. Try holding your forearm (not your entire arm) in the air as you are going to sleep. If it falls, it should stir you enough to re-do the exercise until you've done it enough times to meet your satisfaction for that night. Repetition of this trains your body to enter the sleep state consciously.. sometimes even when you're not attempting to do so at all.
