Attempted WILD, tips and help needed

Got quite close to lucidity last night, trying a technique I learnt hours before and had only tried once.

I lay in my usual position, I didn't move at all, my eyes were always closed and I was still. I counted down from 100 going '100 i'm dreaming, 99 i'm dreaming' and not long I was either

a) In sleep paralysis, my limbs were extremely heavy, but i only saw blackness, no lucid dreaming, then I think I may have fell asleep

b) I fell asleep and I was still conscious and thinking I was awake with sleep paralysis, which would be a good sign?

Any ideas on what happened?

What happened was your focus was still pinned to your physical body, it can be hard to have a dream unless you move your focus away from your physical body. Imagine your in a different position, like your on all fours at the base of your bed. And just let it sink in by holding onto that feeling. Eventually you'll find that a dream body will form at the end of your dream bed where you imagined it and you can get up and walk away.

I think I get what you mean, can you elaborate?

You ever trying imagining doing something physically? I know it's not something people do a lot. You can get a sense of it right now. Try to feel like your in a specific position. You could use it to start lucid dreams in different areas if you like. You could feel like your in a sled riding down a steep hill. Just let the feeling settle in (hard to do in real life, easier in a dream), and when it feels somewhat "there" you just move your body like you normally would.

Hah I never really did try to end up in any position other than my bed. I think you've made me think of something I'll try tonight :P.

So, kind of like daydreaming where you really space out and get really immersed in it?

Yes, it's a day dream your trying to turn into a night dream.

We dream and imagine in the very same area of the human brain... the secondary visual cortices (aka cortex) . Visualization whilst falling asleep is my secret to LD's. It's really all just common sense. Good luck to you!

You were likely part of a) and b) - Sleep paralysis sets the stage, and assuming you had no loss of consciousness from laying down to entering that state, then all that was required is what LucidDreamGod noted. :)

I also personally believe, that when you day dream, you are using the exact same parts of your brain that create a dream. They just are much weaker. Think of your brain like a computer (in reality, it's very similar, a biological computer with a lot of systems to call upon and measure the world), it has all it's RAM dedicated to tasks that regulate day time activities. But SP drastically reduces the tasks your brain is involved in. SP is a bare waste land of your mind, random sensations and thoughts pop up because the RAM is literally so inactive, that it needs to focus on internal stimuli all at once, and tends to create images to explain HI (hypnagogic images). The brain has a tendency to fill in gaps in information, thus we get dreams when nothing else is active to focus on. When you day dream, you are sourcing out jobs to your inactive RAM. That part of your brain that notices details, it starts to awaken once you notice details in your day dream, and put all of it's power into creating new details for you. If you just got SP you might have to wait a little while because these parts of your brain are still trying to linger to the physical world, but they will soon go "ah, wait, there is something going on here, I'm going to work on processing this" as opposed to when you day dream well awake "what? wait, I'm processing information in your physical environment, I don't have time to dedicate myself fully to that right now". It can be difficult because the processes linger to your physical body at the start, but the good thing about this, is if you focus on the details of your dream environment for an extended amount of time, it will start to linger to the dream like this, and you won't have to focus so hard to keep the dream stable.
