You can start using the anchor as soon as you lay down to WILD. If you find that it keeps you awake, you can let yourself get more sleepy and start your mantras/anchors later. It's a fine balancing act and it will be likely different for you every time. You will just have to get a feel for it.
I recommend this WILD tutorial by Sageous. It's long, but you will not be sorry.
