Ok, I didn't get much sleep the past two days, and on both of them I tried to do a nap WILD. Both times, no matter how long I stayed still (at least an hour both time) I could never get past a full body numbness. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong?
Hmm... Have you tried WBTB wild? I'm personally better with naps (Although I know what I've been doing wrong with WBTB).
yea but I always either get too awake or fall asleep too quick. I've tried WBTB every night too but I know it never lasted more than 5 minutes
Yeah I would try a WBTB. Also, when I first started trying to WILD, I was too concerned about staying really aware so I would just lay in bed with my eyes closed and nothing would happen. Try making actually falling asleep your first priority with your conciousness chillin in the background. I usually get nearly completely lost in my thoughts and HI and when SP kicks in I am alerted and become more aware and just wait or visualize something.

okay, I'll try tonight, but one more question. can anyone describe what SP feels like so I actually know when I should test for it?

Is there any part of WILDing you have to do consciously or is my body just retarded? I keep thinking it's like what Clarity said about missing the signal that you're asleep, but I honestly feel exactly the same throughout the whole night after the first five minutes, not even a subtle change!!!
Has anyone else ever had this problem? Doing everything right and still not being able to WILD? I'm so fucking pissed that I'm about to stop even attempting to WILD because it screws up my sleep schedule royally!

Listen, i just go to bed around 10 or 11. Wake up early hours, say to myself "in my next dream i will know that i am dreaming". Then just focus on that or if that doesent work, just try to go to sleep in general, without focusing on it, atleast it would of been in your head. So then when you next dream, you might realise it. But if you want to be sure your going to become lucid, repeat a mantra in your head focus, on what you been talking about in the day about lucid dreaming, write dreams in your journal even if there not lucid. Just get the fact that you want to be lucid stuck in your head.Quote:

Try lowering your awareness a bit when trying WILD, and trying only about 30min-1h everyday. The last SP I got (two weeks ago), I was trying wild, I slept and awaken at the SP, and only did it because I was so relaxed that day, so it's very fucking hard get it, and even then I couldn't maintain my awareness. I couldn't do it anymore, but my hopes are that when I "learn" it, this skill will never leave me...
I recognized the SP because I saw a HI of my friend walking randomly and the room was very dark, so I couldn't be awake nor dreaming.
Would you recommend 10 minutes of mediation? I was thinking about doing that with a relaxation/lucid aiding track.
Ive just said, that you have no hope of having a WILD, thats why im telling you alternatives. Find something else. Explore different techniques.
And what I keep saying is I have explored nearly all techniques, even the unofficial ones, and as of now I want to expand into WILDing. I know how to do these other techniques effectively, but I'll never know what's best for me unless I experience them all.
This is not criticism, but I'm wondering if part of the problem is your frustration?
I haven't successfully WILDed yet too, mainly because when I've tried, I've generally woken up by chance early in the morning and thought "Hey, why not."
One experience, I got so freaking hot during SP (I think it might have been SP, because it kept coming back...well, read on), I would enter a "dreamlet" (one of those fast-passing mini-dreams that aren't substantial and don't last more than a second or two) and be fine, but since I knew it wasn't THE dream I was looking to ride, I kept focusing on keeping my mind alert... once the dreamlet passed over, it was back to being so uncomfortably hot. I had to disrupt my WILD twice to either kick off my blankets or move to the couch because the BF kept moving and further wrecking my attempts. At one point, I tried to force myself into a dream... I was aware, but I was watching something form around me... like I was walking through a damp cave and I could feel myself cooling down slightly. I saw a white light and kept creeping towards it. At the end, there was a flower field. As soon as I was standing in the field, the sky got dark like it was night time and then everything faded around me :( Aaaaand I was boiling hot again. I was soooo frustrated, I gave up the WILD attempt.
The next one, again, it was going on two hours... The SP was fine, but the auditory hallucinations were weak. I wasn't really experiencing any dreamlets either, after 2 hours of laying still. Again, I was frustrated because I'd lost 2 hours of sleep at this point, and I really just needed to get back to sleep so I'd have enough fuel in me for the night shift I was sleeping for.
I did so much reading and asked many questions about WILDing. Firstly that it's probably the hardest technique to learn. It really does take time and practice, practice, practice. I would suggest that if losing sleep is an issue, then maybe hold off on trying to WILD for now. I think the frustration of knowing that you need sleep combined with the fact that it's taking a couple of hours might be causing problems.
If I'm wrong, then maybe the technique needs some tweaking. If you're using the WBTB method, try waking up after 4 hours rather than 6. If you're using WBTB, maybe you're staying awake for too long (I know that's a huge issue in mine... 10 minutes is too long for me to stay awake before I try to WILD). or it's not long enough!
Perhaps if you're able to take naps (say like a 4 hour power nap... I do these when I'm adjusting for shift changes - days to nights), you should practice it before the power nap.
As for what SP feels like? I think it differs for everyone. Um, for me, it's different each time I've tried to WILD. First time, it felt like my body was sinking through my bed. Second, it was too hot. Third, it felt all weird and shifty, like an OBE, and my spirit was still lying there with me, but moving differently than my body...
The consistancies... just the one. Deeply relaxed. Like I'm too tired and have no energy to even lift my arm, even if I tried.
Lastly, you know you're going to be losing 3-4 hours of sleep while you're mastering the WILD. If it's feasible, try to go to sleep earlier, so it's not as hard on you. Also, maybe trying the WILD before you first go to sleep? I've read that really what WBTB does for people is it helps them relax easier because they've already been asleep. If relaxing your body isn't an issue, then you could WILD first thing. The only thing against this option is the REM sleep is the shortest cycle, so you'd have a pretty short LD if you're successful.

OP, I had the extact same problem as you for a long time, with on and off attempts at WILD for years and the problem is that you're too awake, you're too busy thinking 'I should be in SP or a dream by now why am I not?!' to actually fall asleep.
Exactly as hostetjm said, make your first priority falling asleep; even if you fall asleep unconciously you might have a lucid anyway. try and keep it in the back of your mind that you should stay concious or alternatively remind yourself of it from time to time - don't keep asking yourself what your body is feeling, how much numbness you have or if you think you're in SP yet because you will be far too aware to actually fall asleep.
If your sill having alot of trouble WILDing see king yoshii's WILD tutorial it really helped me start. Remember WBTB makes it sooooo mutch easier.
Try WILDing with a wbtb. dont get too frustrated. Im not an expert in WILD, i have had like 35 i think though. And like the others said, your focus is not to stay awake, its to go to sleep. If you try and stay awake and WILD, you will end up staying awake. WILD is to go asleep, consciously. Dont worry about staying in one position, or whether its ok to swallow or not, or if you can rollover or anything like that. just go to sleep, while staying conscious. Your first WILD can be extremely tough to get. I remember i tried for like a month before i got my first WILD. You dont have the WILD experience to go off of. So you really have no idea what you are in for. So its tough. I understand. But dont get frustrated. You can WILD cause you can dream. So if you keep trying you will get it. Just dont try and stay awake. Try to fall asleep. That is key.
And SP feels different for everyone. And sometimes you can feel it coming, but most of the time, at least for me, its a complete suprise attack. I will just be chilling there waiting, feeling comepletely normal, when suddenly i feel like i am falling through my bed, and i dont know which way is up or down. Sometimes i would hear a loud buzzing in my ears too. But i hardly ever see much HI. It always comes with a strong sense of vertigo though. When i get that feeling, the best way for me to get through to the dream, is to start imagining myself moving. When i start feeling like i cant feel anything or have a sense of direction, i just imagine myself rolling. Like i am rolling over on my bed. I then start to feel like my body is rolling, and i can hear the sheets and matress as i am rolling over them. Of course none of this is actually happening, but it feels like it is. It eventually feels like i rolled onto the floor, and that is when i open my eyes and start the dream. That is how I get through SP. Its much easier now that i have practiced :)
Dont give up! WILD is, in my opinion, the most rewarding technique to master. It lets you decide when to LD, and not just suprise DILDs. If you need any help, just pm me.

Just one wanted to clear it up, my last attempt WAS a wbtb. up at most for maybe 5 minutes before going to bed and I was still too awake, that's why I asked about meditating, not because I wanted to make nap WILDs easier.
And I will keep trying. I can probably take a nap most days, as I typically waste a lot of time after school anyways doing pretty much nothing. I will try WBTB every now and then if I can get to sleep early, but it may not be often. I'll keep updating in this thread on my nightly progress, and who knows, maybe I just may get lucky and have one tonight.
Also, I tried Yoshi's tutorial but I think just the fact that it felt like a deadline to roll over messed me up.
Sleep regularly, a good 8-10 hours. When you wake up and are ready to start the day....go back to sleep. When you wake up again...go back to sleep. Do this until you can't possibly fall back to sleep. Works well enough for me.
Well I was on break this week and will no longer be able to try that for a while. And I tried it one day already, and even took a nap after that. all it succeeded in though was giving me less than three hours of sleep the next night.
have you tried adjusting you wbtb time? instead of sleeping 5 hours, try sleeping only 4 before waking up. If that doesnt work try 6.5 hours of sleep then waking up. if that doesnt work try a different time. etc.
well I normally set my alarm for 4.30, but normally I either wake up before the alarm or not waking up until well after it just timed out. So I've really tried a lot of times. Not to mention that I've been going to bed at pretty different times all week with the alarm never changing.
you probably already know, but having a pretty steady sleep schedule helps alot too.

hmm. well the only thing i can say is keep trying. Excitement, determination, frustration, and all those other feelings you get when you are trying to WILD inhibit you more than help you. The best conditions are a bored unfocused mind. You are just going to sleep consciously is all. All the SP and HI and the like is experienced every night. just now, you are conscious. Its nothing special really. Instead of thinking about when SP is coming, or how everything is going to feel, try thinking of what you are going to do in the lucid dream after you are there. Just try and think and occupy your mind with somthing other than whats going on when you are trying to WILD. being aware of your body is keeping it awake, and you cant WILD till its asleep.
I wonder if stopping brooding (or clear the mind) through the day helps.
Try this.
Experiment with your WBTB time schedual, SO THAT: Whe nyou wake you remember at least one dream... of reasonable vivideness.
If you are NOT remembering a dream your REM isn't deep enough or long enough yet and you'll "Wake up" more readily then you'll fall asleep.
In REM, the mind COMPLETELY shuts down the body, so it can't move. In SP, you can still move because the nerve ending between the spine and the brain controling muscular movement is not blocked by the REM signal.
So these are my experience. SP can be very different each time... It can come on gradually, or instantly and intensly, it can itch, be hot or cold, and can tickle even... it can also be painful. All jumbled signals from warped nerve endings.
You obviosly can't fall asleep if you are distracted by the SP... so if the SP is distracting, get up, move about, start again.
Otherwise give up the WILD and go to sleep.
I know exactly what my SP is and exactly what the problem is... I can't inwards focus easy enough :/
