^^ A short answer: Don't worry about HI.
If you don't experience HI during WILD, then you don't experience it. "Getting" to HI should not be a goal anyway, as focusing on the "noise" will only distract you from your greater goal of "getting" to lucidity. Indeed, you could almost count yourself lucky that you are allowing yourself one less distraction during WBTB WILD.
Oh, and no, I can't explain why you don't experience HI other than at night when initially going to sleep; that does seem a bit odd. But again, consider the concept that it really doesn't matter! ;)
sup.
i just wanted to let you know that ive had dozens of DIELDs since last time i posted here. Its really fun because when it begins, always in my room, i go to my curtains and open them, and every time its a different, mindblowing scene. I get so emotional just seeing the awesomeness. So...yeah
^^ Cool! Thanks for sharing.
I also like that "opening curtains" moment; what a handy tool not only for lucidity (talk about dreamsigns!), but for creativity! You might consider flinging the curtains open to places you're interested in seeing. You might lose some of the awesomeness that accompanies surprise, but you might gain some serious control and opportunities for exploration...
I've been half-heartedly trying WILD on and off since taking part in this class. Just had this eperience:
I took an afternoon nap and I don't know if I just had a rather extreme experience of sleep paralysis (as in the sleep disorder, not the mythical SP you get in WILD) or dreamed the whole thing.
I'm lying in bed trying to WILD. I feel I'm not remotely falling asleep and decide to give up to simply nap. The next event I can recall in my memory, my head feels like it's being electrocuted, I scream and think of the scene in the matrix when Neo is first 'plugged in'. I ride out the vibrations in my head, and thinking I've failed my WILD but I did a nose pinch to be sure and I was dreaming. I then started rolling out of bed (essentially rolling into the wall next to my bed so I knew my body wasn't moving). Eventually I landed up in my room, pitch dark. I shout, 'lights, please!', but I hear a knock at the door and then I'm back in bed paralysed! I perceive a presence and start to freak and fight the paralysis and awake.
^^ Yup, based on what you wrote I'd say you dreamed the whole thing, or had a low-level DILD at best. I would bet that if it had been a true WILD, you would have been inclined to ignore the "noise" of that electrocution and paralysis, and would have gone on with your dream. Right?
Also, and I don't know if it matters here: one of the downsides of "standard" RC's like nose-pinching and actions like rolling out of bed is that they are easily incorporated into false lucids. You could very well have also dreamed all that stuff with no real self-awareness present, simply because things like nose pinches, rolling out of bed, and "Lights, please" are undoubtedly deeply and metaphorically embedded into most LD'er's basic, unconscious expectations. Here's a question, though: do you do these things in your higher-level LD's, where you "know" you are there?
Looking back on it now I completely agree. I was quite shaken after I woke from it.
Interesting thoughts on the the nose pinch and stereotype stabilisation technique, no I don't find those things necessary in fully lucid dreams.
... I had a feeling! ;)Quote:

Last night I decided to read through the lessons, and go ahead and start doing them. Back in the beginning of the year, I was working on DEILD, and so I thought that this may also be good to work on. Unfortunately, I lost interest for months for some reason, (I think it was because it was summer and I was staying up a lot later than usual). I could be a lot more experienced than I am now if I had stuck with it. I've decided to come back though and work on it however! I'll be working on WILD for now :) .
Even though I haven't worked on being aware that I'm awake after waking up from a dream, I'm sure that it will come back quickly. Even last night, I was able to be aware that I was awake after a dream. I did attempt a WILD, but I didn't really get any results. That is expected though because I haven't done any mental preparing, etc, for it. I'm also a bit sick right now, so a few parts were difficult. I got to a point where my body felt heavy, but then that feeling would go away. Since I'm feeling a bit sick, it was a little hard for me to 'form the dream' in my mind. I'm confident that I will be able to get it though after a couple weeks of doing the awareness things and that stuff, and once I'm not sick anymore :) .
I had another good attempt yesterday morning. I woke up at 5:59, went to go to the bathroom, and got back in bed and stayed awake for a bit. Then, I decided to WILD. I also listened to some binaural beats with it. I remembered a mantra that I saw here on the forums "Mind awake, body asleep", so I used that. After a bit, the vibrations became more intense, and I could start to see/feel the dream scene I was imagining, start to unfold. However, I got pretty excited, and woke up a bit. That was only about 20 minutes after I started though, which is cool. In my other WILD attempts, it took a lot longer to get to that stage. However, after I 'woke-up', my dad came in, and woke me up by tickling me and pulling the blankets off my bed. Thanks dad ;) .
Attempted again last night. Nothing interesting happened however. I just had light vibrations, and occasionally they got stronger, but then it went away and back down to lighter level vibrations. I think it might have been either because I had woken up too much, and I was just pretty awake, or the timing was just not right.
Just a quick question. Right now, I'm doing these when I wake up at night and I feel like it. Do you think I would see more improvement if I choose nights, perhaps every or every-other night, and plan to do them those nights. That way, I would be doing them more often and be getting more practice than one every week or so?
It could be a matter of timing (more in a sec), but it could also have something to do with paying attention to those vibrations. If you ignore them, and focus on your dream instead, you might find yourself able to make it to sleep more often, without being woken up so easily. Yes, paying attention to any distraction will trigger your reticular system and wake you up, especially if you're already close to waking. Those vibrations, especially if you notice them changing, might as well be someone pounding on your bedroom door. Noise is noise, no matter how important they try to make it on these forums; try to ignore it!
In a word: yes.Quote:

Scheduling your WILD attempts can make a real difference in your success rate for a couple of reasons.
First, by scheduling a specific time or at least day for your dives, you are building powerful expectations founded on anticipation of doing your WILD. That is a very good thing, and that anticipation will have you thinking more about your dreams, your plans, and your Self (more RRC's too!) during waking life. In short, doing WILDs at a specific time makes them more important to you, and important things tend to have a habit of performing better than spur-of-the-moment things.
Also, in scheduling your attempts you might look to find the most successful times for attempts (for instance, mine is between 8 & noon, after five hours of sleep), and it sounds like you might need to take some time and really discern when WILD's will work best for you.
I suggest that you take your scheduling beyond just "every-other" night, and really consider when your situation is best for WILD, and plan on trying them then. If your optimal time only comes around once a week, then maybe you should only try once a week. One good shot a week is much better than 7 haphazard attempts a week, I think.
Thank you Sageous :)
Unfortunately, I will not be able to do experimenting on the best time for WILD until after the 6th. Going on vacation, and staying in a condo with my parents doesn't leave me the option to use my alarm to wake up. I can still attempt my WILDs however, as I am in the habit of waking up after dreams (most of the time), because I'm also working with WILD.
No problem.
And remember, patience is the operative word in LD training -- the right time will arrive eventually!
In the meantime, of course, it only helps to attempt a WILD whenever you go to sleep, if only to keep your mind in good shape!
Tonight, I'm going to set my alarm to wake me up for about 5 hours after I fall asleep. I plan on going to bed around 9:30, so I'll be waking up at 2:30. Then, I will be doing a WBTB for a bit. Probably around 10-15 minutes. I find that I get too awake when doing WBTBs if I stay up too long, so I keep it short. After, I'll be attempting a WILD :) . I'll let you know how it goes! I also think that tonight before bed, I'm going to read over the WILD lessons again, just to get a refresher.
Sounds like an excellent plan... good luck!
and be sure to ignore the noise as best you can! ;)
Unfortunately, there's a change in my plans for tonight. I won't be able to wake up to the alarm, so I'll just be waking up naturally. It'll throw off the time a bit, but I'll still be able to attempt the WILD :) .
^^ Naturally could be better!
I ended up not attempting a WILD last night, but instead took a quick look at SSILD. I want to try that method out, but I feel like I should focus on WILD right now :) .
I've been doing an experimenting with timings, and weekends do not work for me, or rather aren't the optimal time for me to attempt WILD. Up in the mountains in the family house, I have to share a room with my two younger sisters. WBTB there doesn't really work out, unless it's a quick bathroom and then bed WBTB. My sisters always seem to be snoring or making some kind of sound when I awake at night there, except for the occasional moment when it's all quiet (Which is amazing when it happens ;) ). So, the only nights that work for me are the weeknights, which are actually quite good. Sleeping in the basement ensures that it's quiet, cool temperature, and I can set my alarm and move around, go to the bathroom, etc, without worrying about waking up my sleeping family members. I don't worry about waking up during the night, even on days with school. I'm in the habit of going to bed early (Around 9-10 for me), so I'll get plenty of sleep anyways, even with the WBTB and WILD.
I had a WILD this morning but now that I think about it I think it started off as an OBE. I laid still paying attention to my breath until my body was completely tingly and heavy. I started visualizing sitting up and eventually it felt like I was, at which point I still didn't have a visual field. I had to visualize what it would look like to be sitting up before I could see. After getting up and validating that this was a dream, I realized I could still hear the music my dad was playing downstairs! I could not for the life of me get my sound field to become imaginary and throughout the whole dream I could hear the music playing faintly in the background.
Cool :D . Nice job!
As for me last night...I woke up at 3:30 with a nice alarm. It didn't wake me up too much. However, I opened my door and walked out to go use the bathroom, and my grandparents were watching TV, at 2:30 in the morning. That sort-of surprised me a bit :P . When I got back to bed, I went to go WILD. My cat started purring really loudly though, so I had to put him outside of my room, but then he kept scratching at my door. After a little bit, he went away. I decided to try this WILD on my stomach, since that was how I usually slept. However, my hands got numb, I think because of cut of circulation or something :S. In the end, it seemed like last night just didn't go so well. Oh well, there are plenty more opportunities to try again :D
Hey guys sort of new here, but I will be focusing on the WILD technique as my only technique until I successfully do it! So I am in it for the long haul haha :D Last night I did a 15 minute WBTB and then tried to WILD but the sleep paralysis didn't come. Does that happen when you are too awake? Because I felt really awake unfortunately. The other thing that might have affected it was that I went to bed at 1am and then woke up at around 8am so I had already had 7 hours of sleep. Let me know! :D
Hi Balinup, and welcome.
First, Sleep Paralysis (SP) is not something for whose arrival you are waiting; don't look for it, and whether it comes or not will be unimportant. Your LD is not dependent on experiencing SP.
Next, it seems to me that you might indeed have been too awake. Seven hours is a lot of sleep, and your body might have simply not been interested in resuming slumber, and REM. So yes, it might not have worked because you were too awake, and yes indeed, if you feel too awake, you're likely going to have a tough time completing a successful WILD. You might consider trying after only four or five hours' sleep next time, and maybe a bit more WBTB "up" time.
Good luck with your next dive!
Thanks sageous I will keep you updated! I really appreciate the feedback:)
Hello, Sageous! Very cool stuff you got here :)
I haven't been attempting to WILD much, but I have been applying your lessons to DEILD. I've managed to do it 3 times, but none of them lasted more than a fleeting moment. I still consider it relatively successful though :P . I believe my weakness lies in not conjuring up a dream to enter. I got into the DEILD within seconds of it coming to my mind, and haven't had proper time to think of a dream first. But I have taken the time now to think of a detailed scene that I would like to visit frequently in my dreams to come.
My attempts have gone something like this:
Each night I meditate, with a mantra for 20-40 minutes. Then I go to sleep with lucid dreaming on my mind.
The first time, early in the morning, I half-wake from a non-lucid dream and almost without thinking drop myself into the state of mind for DEILD/WILD. Within 5 seconds I feel myself melt through my foam mattress and am then lying in a dream bed. For some reason I felt rather afraid/worried, I don't know about what. I pushed it from my mind and opened my eyes, I was under my covers in a black/white world. I thought I saw a cat lying there in front of me before I closed my eyes again and woke up. Even now I have no idea why I was scared. But for whatever reason I was afraid of getting up or something.
The second time, I woke from a DILD, which I'll tell you about first. (It's real short) I was in a market/grocery store of some sort, and found myself holding a violin. When I started playing I heard an orchestra echoing my playing, and instantly knew I was in a dream, the music was beautiful so I continued playing, ignoring that I was lucid dreaming. After 5-10 seconds more of playing, I woke.
After waking, I immediately lowered my mind into DEILD/WILD and within seconds again I felt my right arm melt through the bed, and I touched the cold wood floor underneath, I remembered to visualize a dream, but was way too late. I woke up a few seconds later.
This morning, the third attempt was from a non-lucid, and I didn't get as far as the last two, I started visualizing as soon as I remembered to, but something kept me awake.
Sorry for such a long post, but do you think I am on the right path? After reading over some stuff you said again, I am going to try and maintain more self-awareness, and get that visualization of my dreamplace going sooner.
Thanks for reading!
