From what you wrote it seems to me you are indeed on the right path... A little more self-awareness (as you already noted), some patience, and more experience to fend off the fear/worry you mentioned, and I think you'll be seeing your DEILD's last longer.

Your instinct about the LD's being short because you weren't conjuring a dream also seems sound; knowing you must remedy that is half the battle, so I wouldn't be surprised if you report shortly that you went in with expectations and schemas fully in hand. With DEILD, keep in mind that you might be able to simply return to the dream from which you just woke, so conjuring might just be a matter of remembering.

And for what it's worth, DEILD has always been my first choice for inducing lucid dreams -- it's WILD without the work, to me.

Hey sageous had a couple more attempts here and feel I am making progress I have been using your method and the counting method to retain awareness.Last night I went to bed at 12 and woke up at about 5am to start a short wbtb. I only went to the bathroom and then stayed awake for a short while. After I started my wild attempt. I did the counting method and stayed perfectly still which I was proud of. I also felt a little more focused on my counting. My mind was still wandering a lot so I think that might of been why I did not wild. I sat there counting for a long time but got frustrated with nothing happening and so I just moved and went to bed. I am going to try later and another attempt tonight!

I attempted a WILD when I woke up this morning. It was a somewhat spontaneous decision :P .

After laying there for a while, I sort of got this feeling that I was just 'Laying there and waiting' which isn't the feeling we're supposed to get. After that, I sort of let my mind think about thoughts, and combined all the SSILD senses together. The vibrations or tingling got stronger, but what I noticed was that there was an increased amount of movement of shapes and such that I was looking at. My problem was that I got too excited, and my heart started beating faster, and in the end didn't help. I noticed that I was a lot more calm than my previous WILD attempts though. I was able to keep my breathing stable. I can tell that I am getting closer and closer, and that a successful WILD is very close :)

That's too bad, but the choice is yours how to get to your LD, of course. If all this stuff works for you, then go for it. However, be aware that if you continue to prioritize (aka get excited about) all that noise, you might find the LD a hard place to get indeed... but if you like the noise better than the dream, that's fine, too.

Hello there again! Reporting back with my progress.

Haven't had much luck the last few days, but this morning I had a (what I consider) major breakthrough :). I wasn't attempting a technique or anything, I was simply exercising my mind while lying in bed before getting up.

Pretending I was taking a walk down the street near my house, visualizing as much as I could, I reached a corner and imagined cars driving by, and continued walking, assuring myself they couldn't hit me. (At this point is where I think the dream starts, but I didn't realize I was doing anything more than visualizing.) A large truck drives through me and I am unharmed. I am completely aware of myself, and start to forget about the visualizing. I then cross another street and try to run into a car as it drives away. It speeds off leaving me behind, so I go back onto the sidewalk and think to myself, "This doesn't look like a daydream.", and after a few moments of considering whats going on, I have full lucidity. Everything is very vivid, down to the mulch in the flower beds. I run and make a leap, soaring into the air 10 feet or so before remembering to stabilize. I drop down to the ground again and try to rub my hands and focus on the ground's texture. It feels like I am wearing thick gloves or something, and I can't really feel my hands on each other. I wake a few seconds later.

I believe this was an unintentional WILD, although obviously with none of the technique part. I first thought it was a DILD, but then I realized I spun that dream out of thin air while I was still quite awake. I was completely aware of myself and the unreality of my experience throughout it, thus the intentionally running through moving cars.

I find it odd that I tried to fly, because in waking life I don't have much desire to do so. It seemed like an impulse due to me expecting the dream to end soon. What do you suggest I do once I am lucid (or perhaps while I am awake) to help abandon that expectation?

^^ Sounds like a genuine WILD to me, Sam, or at least a DILD with an extremely brief lapse of sleep between wake and dream.

Unintentional? Are you sure? sometimes our desires and expectations run so deep that intent can lie beneath our conscious actions. Also, don't worry about doing a WILD without all the "technique;" if you can manage that, even by accident, you've saved yourself a ton of trouble.

Honestly, I wouldn't do much about this, because it could well be your unconscious (aka Dreaming Mind) making an announcement of sorts by setting you into unexpected action. Unfortunately, that announcement could well have been, "Dude, you're waking up soon; move it along!" Instead, what you might do is accept the "flight" and incorporate it into your exploration. For instance, if you find yourself suddenly in the air, just say, "Okay, air it is for now," and then calmly turn back around to face where you would rather be, knowing it will be in front of you. With practice the action will be second nature. Later, as you develop your control skills, you will likely either stop inadvertently flying or discover its cause.

I also wouldn't try to do anything during waking life to stop it, because that usually backfires -- your dreaming mind seems to remember only that you spent a lot of waking-life time thinking about a thing, regardless of your reasons, so concentrating long and hard during waking life about not flying will very likely result in more flight!

I just recalled a little more clearly what it is that made me realize it was more than my day-dream/visualization; When I got back on the sidewalk I tried to open my eyes and stop the exercise, and was very surprised when it didn't work.

No, that's not really it. It's just something that happens naturally. I get excited, but not on purpose. It's just an obstacle that I have to work around. Maybe my post made it sound like I'm focusing on the feelings, the sound, the sights, but that's not what I wanted it to come through as. I'm not the least bit concerned about the noise. Like I said above, it's an obstacle that I need to get around, and I need to build the idea within myself that it's nothing to prioritize and pay attention to.

Okay, so when I lie down to WILD, after a while I feel like I'm spinning, round and round.

I haven't got a clue what to do when this happens. I feel like it's great progress and is the start of something, but at the same time if I focus on it it ends up going away and not returning for a long time.

What do I do when this happens? How do I get past it and transform it into a dream?

^^ I suggest you ignore all this "noise," and let it pass quietly. Trying to focus on it, or attaching value of any sort to it, will tend to result in exactly what happened: nothing.

Try re-reading my session on forming the dream, as that might help you with forming the dream ... But you aren't going to get there if you let relatively unhelpful things like spinning sensations take center stage.

Hello all!!! im going to have a go at WILDing tonight, I,ve tryed before with little success but im pretty confident I,ll succed. Also Ive been thinking alot about stabilizing dreams and it seems to take alot of your attition away from your dream world, I,ve read alot about nightmares (because i seem to have them alot) and one of the ways to get red of things is to not focuse o them and think of something else. Could this be the why people's dreams seem to end right when they focuse on rubbing their hands together or simular stabilizing technics? Im new to lucid dreaming so sry if i sound like a dummy

Regarding stabilization, you might do a search of this site, as there is much helpful talk about it. That said, keep in mind that most stabilization attempts happen when a dreamer realizes that she is losing control or contact in the dream. In other words, she was likely to wake up shortly anyway, and stabilizing was a last-ditch effort.

And yeah, aside from that, stabilizing attempts can indeed inadvertently end a dream, because you might find yourself so focused on completing some technique, like hand-rubbing, you abandon self-awareness and lucidity. I've often found that simply calming down and quietly gathering my awareness works much better than techniques.

I think I will do another attempt tonight, but change a few things. Instead of waking from my alarm as I do a lot for WBTB, I'll go to sleep with the mindset of waking up after a dream, which I have been doing, so I will wake up naturally. When I go back to bed, instead of lying on my back (which is what I usually do when I attempt WILD), i'll try it lying on my stomach. That is my usual sleeping position, which I believe will help me fall asleep and transition easier during the WILD.

^^ Sounds like a good plan.

One quick warning about the sleeping position, though: Sometimes it's better to fall asleep in an unusual position (or one you are sure is right), rather than the position that usually brings easy sleep. Remember that you're trying to hang on to your self-awareness while falling asleep; choosing the most natural route to sleep might make that difficult.

That said, your plan could work for you (especially if you're a light sleeper), so it could be a good idea. and, if your attitude, expectation, and intention are strong, any sleep posture will work!

Alright! So, I woke up about 5 or so hours after I went to sleep. Ended up turning on the lights so I could write in my DJ and then went to the bathroom. I came back and went back to bed, but lying on my stomach was just uncomfortable for this. I decided that I liked it better to be on my back instead.

In the past year, I've gone from only pretty much having DILDs my whole life, to finally experiencing WILDs and DEILDs. The key was using these vibrations that have occurred naturally all my life. I just didn't know what to do with them. I was a little scared of them, because let's face it, they feel kinda crazy. But I've been eyeballing this class, and talking with RareCola who recommends this class highly over the past several months. Anyway, what I'm getting at, is that I finally induced the vibrations for the first time, instead of just waiting for their rare and random occurrence. This is a huge step for me, because if I can repeat it, then I can increase the frequency of having WILDs, vs hoping and waiting for random DILDs. Nothing wrong with DILDs, don't get me wrong. I am just happy that I'm getting better at WILDing! And alot of the reason is because of this class. And patience. Tons of patience. Like literally, YEARS of patience. Also, I may have remedied a schema or two in the process. Here's an excerpt:

Christmas lights hung loosely from some of the trees and bushes. I pressed my head to the window and moved through it. When I got outside, things changed. It got darker (ffuu), but I just plodded along down the block. I walked past that SAME pool, which made me mad for some reason. "Really?!" I didn't want to revisit it. Those carvings still looked icky to me. I wish I had thought of the basic ski task though, since at least that water was shallow and I had already been in it. Oh well. I couldn't really think of much to do, and I was getting a bit randy anyway. I found a clothing shop with some women inside, so I went in...

New Found Control over WILDing - Dream Journals - Lucid Dreaming - Dream Views

Ok, so I just had a really weird experience about 20 minutes ago. I was really sleepy and wanted to take a nap, so I laid down and randomly decided to attempt SILD (senses induced lucid dream). I just got impatient with it and let my mind wander, but I found myself coming across strange images (and I mean, really strange) that caused me to snap back awake without opening my eyes. Suddenly, my eyes started twitching like crazy and I saw flashing white lights. Now, I have epilepsy, so this kind of scared me, cause I thought I was going to have a seizure. So I opened my eyes and focused on something before dozing off again. Ok, this time, not only were there flashing lights, but I felt myself spinning, as if I was rolling down a hill. I thought I was gonna have one of those OBE's, but I just got too scared and opened my eyes. The world was still spinning! And my body was twitching like crazy, so finally I just decided to get up and calm down, cause I felt like I couldn't breathe and my heart was going at like 200 mph.

Usually what happens when I wake up in the morning, is that my body twitches for a few minutes, then calms down. And that's exactly what happened when I got up. Also, my neck felt really stiff and I could barely move my head. I'm not sure what I just experienced, but I'm not about to try it again :I

Though you'll find from my class that I've got a thing about making the "noise," like vibrations, important, your clever use of it (rather than over-reverence for it) seems an excellent exception. No, thank you Sageous! And I admit that vibrations and sleep paralysis are not required for WILDs. It just so happens that I got lucky and the vibrations I've had my whole life became useful in my endeavors to WILD. Of course it would be even more cool to attain lucidity through a WILD without having to depend on vibrations, or sleep paralysis, or a WBTB, or any other "necessary" tool. I'm just searching for that feeling, that "way" to get lucid without having to depend on things. It took me 8 years on DV to even have a WILD at all, so I don't mind if it takes another 8 years to get to it without depending on superfluous factors. Trial and error baby. And the journey is as fun as the result :)

I hope every member on DV can find a similar path. It's so worth it. Thank you, Sageous, for your insightful and inspiring class.

I had my second attempt yesterday. Went to bed at 11, and I woke up with an alarm at 7:00. I went to the bathroom then came back to bed. I layed on my side, counting my breaths for 5 or 10 minutes, and nothing happened, so I tried visualizing the dream I came out of for 5 or 10 more minutes, nothing happend. I was feeling uncomfortable and I rolled over and did the same thing as before. Nothing happened.

Five to twenty minutes is a very short time to allow for a WILD, Billyboy; it can take as long as an hour before your body falls asleep in the best of situations... If your mind (and possibly adrenaline) is pumped up in anticipation of a very cool thing like a LD, then it could take even longer than an hour.

I suggest you try to find a sleep position in which you can stay reasonably comfortable for more than twenty minutes, or maybe work on ignoring the impulse to roll over that tends to come after a few minutes in one position. Also, you might want to shorten up the timing a bit -- 8 hours of sleep might be a bit too much, as your body might be fully rested and disinterested in returning to sleep.

In other words, I think another attempt might be worth a try!

Okay, thanks. Last time I tried, I felt a very small vibration quickly, so I was expecting something to happen quickly.

I also fell asleep after my attempt and dreamed, so I don't think I was fully rested.

I tried again, and I accidentally fell asleep.
