Night Seven
Brother?! Cult was his brother?!
I blinked. Well, they did have certain similarities. And it wasn't like it was really that unbelievable.
"Hello, boys," a female said, entering the house. "How are--Who is she?"
I blinked again and met curious, bright, oceanic eyes.
The female was probably five-six and was slender with curves in all the right places. She was a pale ivory and stood in a labcoat like Cult's only she had a stethescope draped on her shoulders.
He hair was a dark, rich mahogony and was pulled into a tight ponytail on top of her head.
"Signit," Talisen said calmly. "You're home earlier than usual. Is business not well?"
She gave him a sharp look.
"You know that when it's slow that's a good thing," she said as she sat on the floor. I stared at them all dumbfounded. "And who is she?"
"This is Pandora Avalon," Cult said reluctantly. "She's staying with us--temporarily, of course."
"So like that Jennifer brat?" she growled. "I was never a fan of the Avalons."
I blinked. 'Jennifer brat'? What was that all about?!
I opened my mouth to speak but thought better of it and closed it. Getting into a fight wouldn't help matters any. And I couldn't afford to change the course of history.
"Well," she said, standing, "I'm headed back into town. Cult, you with me?"
He nodded and the two left, leaving Talisen and I.
Talisen went to work on cooking as I attempted to get the urge to ask him something--anything--about Signit and Cult.
But I would deal with that milestone when I got back to my Talisen--back to Death.
I paused, eyes widening.
Cult...was it possible that he could be...just maybe...
"Would you like dinner?" Talisen asked quietly, interrupting my thoughts. "Or would you rather go to bed. You don't look like you feel very well."
I blinked.
"I'll have dinner, please," I said slowly. My voice was shaky and I knew it. I made an attempt--a failed one--to calm myself. "But I'll head to bed after..."
Talisen nodded and I felt my stomach roll as pieces of the longest puzzle I'd ever seen fell into place.
Dinner had turned out to be some kind of meat and several types of vegetables and herbs. In the end, I'd tried the unknown foods and found that I had a liking to many of them.
Shortly after, Signit and Cult left, leaving Talisen and I by ourselves in the tree-home.
We sat in silence for about ten minutes before I finally spoke.
"I should probably get some rest," I said quietly, standing. Talisen followed my lead. "Of course. I'll have Keia watch over you."
"Keia?"
I blinked as a siberian tiger slunk to me from one of the corners. I hadn't even known it was there.
The large cat took its place beside Talisen, glaring at me, and I tried not to wince as it sized me up.
"Keia," Talisen whispered softly. "Do me a favor, watch over her as she sleeps. Protect her."
The tiger blinked and then snorted as if to say 'Really?' before walking to me, it's bright blue eyes glaring at me. She seemed to say, 'I'll do it, but only because he asked'.
I slipped away and into the room Talisen had given to me and curled up on the mats on the floor, pulling the thin blankets over me. It wasn't the best thing in the world but I'd certainly seen worse--such as a glass case.
The tiger laid down in front of me, guarding the door and I smiled, memories of Helios and Pain and even Death filling my dreams as I slept.
