Here's a drawing that I just finished recently. I've always been mildly annoyed at how in movies, books, etc., aliens and other weird creatures always look like a guy in a suit, or a variation of something that lives on earth, or a mythological creature. Because of this, I have tried several times to draw creatures that resemble preexisting things as little as possible while still looking like living creatures. This piece is one of my favorites.

I will probably upload some more drawings to this thread within the next few days.

That's a great drawing but I had the same thought some time ago. When I shared it with someone else, a teacher or some such, I think it was, that someone told me that alien creatures in fiction being mostly humanoid can be justified by the fact that even in reality, beings from other galaxies would likely be humanoid due to different theories, which basically revolve around evolution and the creation of life - meaning that beings on other planets would be humanoid more or less as well just like the human race on Earth developed to be (survival, body structure and usage, etc.).

But aye, plenty of detail and all such, keep it up!

Yeah, It's good stuff. I like it. Though you are trying to avoid any similarities with humans you include an eye. Seems odd, would aliens have eyes as we know them? Oh also good shading.

Cool. Is it based on any real animal or just completely original and made up?

Scrolling down the page, Merlock, your sig. depressed me a bit... ONLY SUFFERING AND PAIN....

Thanks for the compliments, I'll scan and upload a new piece tomorrow.

Merlock: I've heard that explanation too, and I don't think it's valid. The human body and mind are primarily adapted to communication and tool use. Therefore, you'd expect anything with a human-like mind to also be adapted towards communication and tool use. However, even on earth, there are many creatures with adaptations towards tool use or communication which look almost nothing like humans. For example, some forms of squid have very complex forms of communication, by changing the colors and patterns on their skin, and crows are good tool users using their beaks and talons. Because of this, it's a logical conclusion that a human-like intelligence could work equally well with a drastically different body form.

Goldney: I actually have no clue why I included the human-like eye. I originally drew this piece two or three years ago, and just recently re-drew it because the original was very simplistic and I thought that the concept was good enough that I should re-draw it with my current art skills.

Lord Toaster: Like I said in my first post, it is completely original and made up.

If I were to make any critiscisms it would be that the pupil/iris is not rounded. When drawing eyes it's important to remember that they are spherical. Other than that I think it's good.

This one's another remake of something I drew a few years ago. I believe it was originally supposed to be a drawing of a glaahk, a creature from Geneforge, a RPG I was playing at the time. However, it didn't turn out well, so I never really finished it. I recently decided to re-draw it, and since I wanted to make something that was somewhat original, I ended up making something with only basic similarities to the glaahk.

I felt like drawing something from real life for once, saw my Wii remote, and ended up drawing this.

I like the wii remote, particularly the shading in it. I can never quite get shading right in my drawings so they look quite 1 dimensional. If I were to make a criticism about the 'glaahk?' then it's that it's too side on. Do you know what I mean, nothing ever appears completely side-on, oh and there are no muscles in the arms. They're flat, if you worked these two things into your next drawings they would look amazing as you have a nice style and are very inventive. Keep up the good drawings!
