This is the completed version of my background information for the Dark Novel in the making. ( I will prob add some more information) Intro: The Empire of Makitono, based on 16th centuary Japan, is a strange place. It is home to: o) Thousands of Spirits - either friendly or vile- which reside in caves, rivers, lakes, forests or animals. o) Demons - which at first glance may look like a normal merchant, but take another and it will reveal a hidious demented creature- o) Ghosts of the tormented and wronged men, o) Shinto-like Priests who would sacrifice their own daughter to perform the needed rituals o) Warlords whom drink the blood of their foes and eat the meat of traiters. o) An Emperor, whos young and inocent look on life is twisted by the visitations of horrors from the mind. Overview The people of Makitono believe that every living thing has a Spirit – also rivers, seas, waterfalls and caves may be home to certain Spirits – and when someone dies they also become a Spirit and enter the world of the Spiritual/Over World. They also believe that when a human dies their soul goes into the underworld and may become a Demon. The people of Makitono do not worship particular gods but instead they worship certain Spirits which rule over certain aspects of their daily life. For example; some, who live near a lake, may worship the Spirit of that lake, while others who live near a forest may worship the Spirit of that Forest. The people also believe in three main deities (although they still don’t hold them any higher than the rest). They are: Seimei, Zetsumei and Reikon who are rulers of the Living World, the Dead World, and the Spirit World. Therefore every shrine is also dedicated to Seimei and Reikon where however Zetsumei is feared and hated as he is believed to be the deity of the Demons. The Three Worlds and Two Gates The people of Makitono believe in three separate worlds; the world of the Living, the Dead and the Spirits. They also believe in two gates both opposite each other at the far sides of Makitono; the gate to the Dead (West) and a gate to the Spirits (East). The Living World World of the Living The world of the living is believed to be the physical state of everything, where the spirit is trapped in this world in our body by our soul. Spirits in the Living World take on a slight physical form and so it has been heard in legends of men killing Spirits for not doing as he asked. Thing such as animals, plants and even rivers contain Spirits in them. For example: there are individual Spirits for every single bear, but there is also one Spirit which looks after all the bears. The Underworld World of the Souls/dead When a human dies in the World of the Living it is split into three; the spirit, the body and the soul. While the spirit enters the world of Spirits and the body remains in the Living World, the soul enters the world of the Dead. The Soul (also known as the “evil-spirit”) is what keeps the Spirit attached to the body and in the Living World; it needs the spirit and is the only thing in the Living World that can be evil. Therefore, when the soul enters the Underworld, there is a chance that it will try to enter the Living World in search for its Spirit. For a Soul to enter the Living World it needs a physical form, a body. To do this, it will either steal a body of a living or dead Human or may even take the body of an animal. This monstrosity of a body and soul (with no spirit) is known as a Demon and wonders the Living World killing all in its path in search of its Spirit. The Demon may sometimes haunt villages, wait in mountains, be disguised as man until it changes to a horrific form and kills. Although most Demon are not in fact evil – they just happen to kill anything that gets in its path – some Demons find it pleasurable to feast upon a Human and to do only harm. The Over World World of the Spirits When a Human dies, its Spirit will end up here. It is the world where most Spirits live watching over the Living World quietly, it is the Makitono version of heaven. .................................................. ........................ Story Line and More My Story focuses on an unnamed Demon. He has taken over the body of a young 17 year old boy and, for some unknown reason, he cannot remember a thing - he doesn't even know that he is a Demon. He eventually comes to a nearby village which is also the birthplace of the "body" that the Demon has taken over. The villagers are pleased to see him - hes been away for some time - and although he looks abit different and doesnt remember anything, they just think hes eaten something strange and pass it off as nothing. The Demon starts to believe that he is a Human boy called Nakito although he starts getting strange dreams...... All i know is that he finds out he is a Demon at least half - if not earlier - through the story. There is a reason he came to the Living World, and it was not just to find his Spirit. There is something sinistar - as usuall - going on in the Empire. The Spirit Festival is nearing, Demons are becoming more commen and are seen haunting many village houses. Even ghosts - something rare in the Empire, usually only seen in rich mantions, or villages with a dark secret - are seen in towns and cities at night. Im not sure how many main characters there will be, all I have started to develop are the main three: Nakito: Male, 17, Demon Masumi: Female, 17, 18 or 19, Human, old friend of Nakito's (the real Nakito) she suspects something is up wth him first. She joins him later in the story and not straight after he leaves the village. Koji: Male, 25, Human, a young Demon Hunter. He travels the Empire stopping off in small towns and villages in search for Demons, sometimes for a price. He doesnt seem to have a reason at first, and uses the money selfishly rather than for a good cause (like paying for some sick sibling (as seen in many stories/films/games)). .................................................. .. So far that is really all i have got up to on making the story background. ------Thank you for your time, and please comment, ask questions or just plain flame if you want (only if it is to do with this and there is a good reason). I will also post some myths of the Empire like the creation story and such..... I have just read over this properly and there are some small things that i need to add to this, ill do this tommorow probably. And again, say what you will please, i want to know what you think!

I enjoyed this overview.. i like books with spirits. you should introduce the plot in this overview but if it became a novel i would definalty (spelling) buy it. Please keep me posted on updates

Thanks alot for your comments. I was playing Silent Hill 3 last night (love the game!) and i got some ideas.... For a plot: Someone, or something(s) want to unite the three worlds (living, Spirit and Soul), this will create some nightmarish disturbing world - like the nightmare world in Silent Hill (please know that im not gonna steal anything from it, just using it as inapiration for mood and atmoshpere). I know that in the end the worlds wont unite, however, to not disapoint, there will be places - like towns or villages - that have been transformed already and are places where i really want to develop the horror. Ill write some more later which will prob help you to understand everything a little more! -Thanks, and please keep commenting
