Photography Task Week of August 05, 2007

Nice bee shot, rooj! Bees are always a pain for me because they never seem to sit still for long. I love the fly's blue butt, too! Shiny...

Anyways, I'm going to be in Boston tomorrow, so I'd better set the next task, I think this one has run its course pretty well. If anyone was about to post new fly pictures, feel free to do so - this isn't strict or anything.

The new task is a bit more vague, but I'd like to leave room for interpretation to allow for more creativity. You must take a picture which captures movement.

Here's an example involving water that I took a few minutes ago - it can be whatever you want!

Good luck everyone, I'm curious to see what you come up with. I'll be looking to get a better picture, myself - I'm going to Boston tomorrow, like I said, and that might be a cool place to find 'movement'

I guess this is kind of cheating since these are old photos, but I don't have a good camera so I thought I would post these anyway. I took these with my best friend's camera.

I think the focus is on the spoon, not the water...

Not the greatest photo in the world, but it's what was available.

Okay, here are a few 'motion' pictures I got during my trip today.

This could be a bit of a stretch, but I feel like it's moving in some way or another. It's the top of a table at Brown.

      CONFUSION! Bungee cable things.

Fourth level of a building, looking down a spiral staircase.

Another table, this time looking through the holes for a parasol. Seemed a bit spinny to me.

And the most motioney, but in my opinion, worst one (the inside of the car is all blurry because I had to hold the camera still for two seconds with my bare hands on a bumpy road)

This one requires a bit of explanation. There is a new road going in right out front of our building. It has been way too hot to pour concrete the past few days, putting them behind schedule, and the nights have had the concrete plant booked for other jobs. Last night they started, and this image was shot while they were racing the thermometer, trying to make their goal before the temp hit 87 degrees.

I'm only going to post the one right now... there are more, but I have to get off to work right now.

This one is an operator on one of the huge concrete forming machines just after sunrise. The machine is in motion, and there is a flurry of activity around him:

Nice, Pj! I like the lighting, and the guy's gaze is perfect for the feel of the shot. I'm amazed that the sun didn't white out the whole shot, even that early - it must have been pretty cloudy/smoggy!

      Thank you!

It was EXTREMELY humid - the sun rose an angry red. I was getting a nice bounce off of a light colored building just off to my right, helping to give some definition and keep it from being a total silhouette. I shot it at around 70mm, 100 ISA, program mode.

I'm a bit torqued though - hadn't noticed before, but there's ANOTHER oil spot on my sensor - just below center right. I just went through the cleaning ritual the day before.

That is my only gripe about this otherwise wonderful camera - a Canon 350D... it tends to splat the sensor from time to time from who knows where, and cleaning is delicate and difficult.

Thank you for the comments! I'm glad to see this thread - and might suggest starting a new thread each week rather than just keep stringing this one along. People can keep posting to the relevant thread if they wish even after the task is "complete." It will make a nicer gallery, methinks.

With your permission, I think that'd be great. We should probably start anew next week, but this one's already started so it would be a shame to move on now.

To the general public - if anyone wants to suggest a task/theme for next week, feel free to pm me - I'm bound to run out of ideas after a few weeks and I'd like this whole thing to be as interactive as possible so it won't get boring.

I thought it might be cool to make each week have a 'winner' who gets to choose the next week's theme, so that there's more incentive to post things, but I'm not sure if I want this to be competitive, and I have no idea how we would manage the judging. Maybe we could pick a name out of a hat from everyone who completed the task of the previous week, or something? I'm totally fine with coming up with them all myself, but it might be more interesting this way. Any suggestions?

Has been a beautiful day today so I took advantage of it and got some motion pictures of me watering the plants:

There's a bit of a back story to this one.

Conditions in Northern Michigan are tinderbox-dry right now. This photo was taken at a fire scene a few miles from our property. Nobody was injured, but the fire spread so fast and was so intense that they weren't even able to push their RVs out of harm's way. This is one of the burned RVs, sitting right where it was, never to move again under its own power, as our dog runs past.

Took this picture with this thread vaguely in mind when I was in the Lake District last week... nothing all too artistic, but I reckon it captures movement pretty well

Toaster that makes me feel weird, like I am going to fall if I look at it any longer...

      Great picture!

Adam, I get the same feeling - I think it's because the grass-like vegetation on the rocks makes your brain confused as to whether you're looking at the floor from a cliff, or a cliff from the floor

Hm... is that waterfall famous? Do you have to walk along a valley for quite a way?

Because I'm sure I climbed up one which looked very familiar.

Thanks guys... the picture's pretty much level as you see it. It's flowing sideways off the rocks and making many mini waterfalls. I see what you mean though - it is a bit confusing and some of the mini waterfalls look like they are going the wrong direction... reminds me of M.C. Esher

Xei, I don't think it's really very famous, but you did have to climb a fair way to get to it. There are loads of little streams like this in the Lake District - if you've been there I'm not surprised the picture looks familiar.

Myeh, the way it splits and stuff though...

You're right though, there must be a tonne of waterfalls which look like that up there.
