      Lowering picture resolution

Does anyone know how to save photos in a lower resolution? My camera has 10 megapixels and when I try to send or post my pictures.. the file size is too large. I am also using Picasa. I appreciate the help.

Are they RAW images? Try saving them as a PNG, it's a lossless compression, so you don't loose quality, just file size.

If that doesn't work any photo editor can scale down pictures. I've never heard of Picasa but this is how to do it in the most common photo editors.

      In iPhoto:
      Find the photo you want.
      File > Export
      Select Scale no larger than...
Type in the size that you want it

      In Photoshop
      Image > Image Size
      Type whatever size you want
      Save

I use IrfanView to resize/resample my pictures. It's extremely easy to do. Just open the image in IrfanView, go to the Image menu -> Resize/Resample (or just press Ctrl+R if you're in Windows), select the size you want (I recommend 1024x768 or less for forum posting) and be sure "Resample" is checked. Then click "Okay".

Now either go to File -> Save As or press S to save the much smaller image. Set the little quality slider to around 60-70 for internet images. I would also recommend saving as .JPEG for forum viewing, simply because .PNG files are usually much much larger, though higher quality. Thing is, once the image has been resized and resampled, you don't really need the extra quality of .PNG, .JPEG is plenty, and will load much faster.

      Hope this helps.

IrfanView has the best optimisation out of applications I've used. Better than Photoshop's as well. File size optimisation that is. Even at 100% JPG quality, the image will be up to twice less in file size than a Photoshop 12-level quality save.

So, aye, IrfanView is the way to go for resizing and saving with the best ratio of quality and file size.

You just want to make the image smaller... right? If you want to resize and are on a PC, open the picture in MS Paint then press CTRL+W. That takes you to the sizing option.

I just resize photos in my default picture editer which is Microsoft Office Picture Manager. Go to Picture > Resize > then you can pick the resolution you want it set at. To post pics on the forum, the 680 x 480 is the best.
