      Falling Worlds
      by Eric Krokos

      Who am I?
When is it that you believe in fate?
Where did it all come from?
      Why do we exist?
How did this come to be?
What are these feelings, are they real?
      Is this real?
I want to tell you and me.

      Chapter 1
In the barren waste lands of the last remnants of planet Earth, my plans were soon to be satisfied. My purges of the universes to rectify and obliterate the traces of existence were absolute. The last strongholds belonged to the technological humans and their machines of devastation. Their subsistence must be stopped so anew may initiate. My fellow gods and I have come to this petty planet, with the intentions of bringing down their resistance.
“This is it, the last stronghold, then we can remake and correct,” I understood in a satisfied tone.
“Then beckon our army and end this foolish crusade.” a male’s voice called out in an uncertain shout.
I can see in the distance, through the waves of heat reflecting off the field of dried dirt there they stood. Along side the cliffs of the mountain, the human army standing ready to repel the force. The army was composed of 100 tanks, hovering about the ground, stirring a good deal of dust. Their plasma guns point at the four of us. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers, lined up with their lasers and heavy black armor await their doom. The Fortress behind is merely in ruins, not used for an exceedingly long time. I took a glance at the female next to me. I couldn’t recall her name; it was wiped from my memory. I excused the thought and looked once again at the enemy. I raised my hands and cast a bright light over our bodies, encasing us in bright gold lined, detailed, beautiful armor.
“Enough of this waiting lets kill them!” a different male’s voice roared from behind me.
I raised my army and cast a brilliant sword in my hand. The sword was encrusted with gold lining, with symbols encrypted on its side. I couldn’t see them too clearly because of the sun’s bright reflection.
I pointed the sword towards the sun and yelled at the top of my body’s voice, “Rise up my friends. Let’s end this for the glory of Fate!”
At the same moment, billions of the dead creatures from all across the universe rose from the ground, removing the foliage and sand from their backs. Simultaneously the army reached back into the Earth for their weapons, retrieving swords, axes, bows and arrows, and shields all covered with designs.
I pointed my sword at the enemy fortress and yelled “Obliterate them!” with a chilling accent.
In the foreground, my army roared at the humans and began to charge very rapidly. The cloud of dust from the charge blinded the view of the attack.
“Here it comes,” I heard from someone nearby, just before the sounds of crashing and splintering of wood filled the air. Carcasses filled the sky as my army destroyed the first five lines of tanks and humans. Meanwhile, the artillery from the human tanks opened fire upon my troops, only to stir more dust from the recoil. The amount of sand in the air created a blanket upon the armies.
“Poor...,” I couldn’t recognize the name; it was lost in the abyss of thought, “He’s missing out on all this” a males voice had laughed.
“Too bad for him, I’m going to join in, it’s the last battle!” I said anxiously, but firmly.
With those last words, I rushed to the front lines, blowing away any beings in my path. I laughed to myself at the thought of killing another.
“Get out of my way!” I screamed, killing my troops around me to get in combat with the enemy. The fearful look in the eyes of the human solders, their expressions of death, and the stench of dirt and blood filled me. I paid no attention. I shoved my sword into the man directly in front of me, his blood spraying on the others around him. I withdrew my sword and walked back to my army. A few feet from the dead body, a horrible sensation overtook me.
The female voice had yelled out my name not too far from me. Falling to the ground, I saw her run towards me without any weapons. I couldn’t understand what was happening. I cannot get hurt, I do not feel pain, and no one can touch me. However, the pain came not from a physical wound, but from inside. Not an emotional blow, but I was being torn apart from the inside out; I was disappearing.
“I’ll get you out of here,” the same voice cried out, attempting to drag me out of the fighting. A scream emitted from her and all the other companions that I was standing with before.
They fell to the ground in the middle of the battle. I tried to reach out and grab her, but I failed; the ground under me was vanishing, revealing a black abyss that the four of us were being pulled into. I wanted to scream but no sound came. I tried to move, but no motion came. It was as if I was being removed from the fabric of existence. Not too far away, the others were suffering the same fate. Now, completely enclosed in darkness, alone, I felt incomplete, something had left. Darkness had taken over me.
From every time we meet, to every time we part, i will add another memory to my shattered heart, and for every dream we chase, another memory will take its place, so we can remember it one day.

      Chapter 2
Waking with sweat on my face, hands and legs trembling, and my chest rising and falling rapidly, I tried to regain myself.
“What a dream, it seemed so real; I wish I would stop having it!” wiping my eyes, attempting not to cry.
I looked over at my clock; it was 5:20 A.M. I sighed with disappointment. Five more minutes till my alarm goes off. I shut the alarm off figuring five more minutes weren’t worth it. The sheets were all shoved at the bottom of the bed, and my pillow all wet from drool. In the darkness, I found my way to the closet and yanked off the hooks a pair of pants and a polo that was on the floor in the closet.
Stumbling down the stairs to my living room, the image and feeling of the dream were fresh in my mind, replaying over and over. My stomach ached from the thought of death and of pure hunger for breakfast I felt too lazy to make. The sofa always looked like a field of softness that would call my name. I laid myself down on the sofa with the T.V on and a pillow under my chest.

A few minutes later, my dad came down and prepared his breakfast and went off to work. We never really talked, mainly because I was half asleep on the sofa.
“See ya later Eric,” he would always say,
“Yea...good night,” I said mistakenly, forgetting it was the morning. It made me laugh realizing how stupid I was when I was partially awake.

My T.V show had finally gone off, which told me it was time to get ready for my mom to take me to the bus. The first few steps I took off the sofa were the most painful parts of the morning, but at least it was a Friday. I rushed over to grab my shoes and my backpack before my mom rushed down the stairs to look for the keys.
“Ok, lets go,” she groaned tiredly; she had clearly forgotten that one can only press snooze one or two times, not five or six.

The bus had finally arrived, five minutes late as usual. I got myself out of the car with my exhaustingly heavy backpack that the teacher always felt wasn’t necessary because of the little amount of work they gave us. However, the weight was very little compared to most backpacks I’ve seen.
“Sup Eric,” Jorryn always said to me every morning.
“Not bad, least today is Friday!” I replied, trying to brighten the morning air.
“Yea,” he answered having a great idea in mind. He was always full of ideas; he could always figure something to do on boring days. He was smart, smarter than me, he would always help me or correct me if I said or did something wrong. Sometimes it was more of an annoyance than a “helped” feeling. We stepped onto the bus that was half empty; Jorryn and I were always the first on. The back seats were empty, as they usually were, because we always took them before anyone else got on. Achingly I took off my backpack just before I sat down in the seat.
“So Eric, I was thinking, how bout we go camping again?” Jorryn said in a positive voice. He loved the outdoors, but he didn’t look like it; he looked more like an indoor boy who’d rather play videogames.
“Well, I suppose, just check with your parents and I will with mine. We take it from there?” I answered while scratching an annoying itch on my back I was just able to reach.
“Sounds good.” We didn’t talk about anything else the whole bus ride. The ride was exactly the same everyday, long and boring.

Once at the school I started my everyday activities. As I came into the classroom, everything was typical, all the students talking about girls and how they want to beat other people up with the sun barely shining in through the shaded windows. The white tiled wall was always very depressing; to me it was something they’d put into a prison. The Science teacher had very little decorations on the wall, but she had those weird educational posters. The class was always interesting to me though, we always learned something new everyday. That’s what I like, not to learn something then go over it every minute acting like we didn’t learn anything earlier.
Just as the bell was about to ring the teacher came running in with a stack of papers. It was a student’s worst dream come true, a pop quiz worth more than it should be.
“Class, even though this is a pop quiz, I have confidence in all of you that you will do well.” the teacher said in a happy cheerful voice. It seemed that most teachers do that. I always thought that it must be truly horrible to have to act happy.
“Kendis would you pass out the quizzes?”
“Man, I always gota do it,” he said, irritated.
As he passed out the quizzes, I felt very confident that I would do well since science was one of my strong subjects.
After the quiz I went to lunch. It was always the same thing, one person would cut in the lunch line, and then every poser in the world would, and get French Fries! I mean it was everyday, and it was really getting old. At least the food they served was okay, but if you look at what the school buys the food for, and what you pay, it’s like a 500% gain. And the students, from my view, don’t get a penny out of it. No field trips, No candy, nothing.
The people at my table would always talk about what people in high school always do. Girls, teachers, school, future, parties, ruling the world, and it seemed to never get old. We always had something to talk about, because no one at my table was someone else, a “poser”.
In English class we got done reading Troy and I swear, it’s a really good story, especially the way my teacher explained it. My English class never got old. You were always having an old story being told or some fun activity. Not like a “fun” project where you have to write a report on something you don’t know and could care less about. Another, one of the nice parts of my English class, I can’t remember the last time I had homework.
In my math class, we would do problem after problem after problem. Yesterday we had done fifty problems straight, and each took about 5 minutes to do, and you had about forty minutes to do them all. Do the math, and it was not that great. However, it did get the skills in your head “if you did all of them correctly,” which did come in handy. Just lucky for me, I’ve got secret ways to get my problems done without cheating.

After the rest of the miserable school day, it was finally time to go home. The best time of the day! After the school bus had dropped Jorryn and me, we would take the journey back to our houses. The distance was 1/3 of a mile, but we’d always have the strangest conversations along the way.
“So yea, I called my parents and they said that it was fine to go camping with you.” Jorryn cheerfully stated. Whenever something good or exciting was going to happen, his voice would go up by an octave.
“Ok, then its settled, drop your’e stuff off at your house, then come to mine,” I finished after creating a three second pause from the end of what he said.
      “Okay, great!”
We walked on for a little further, passing the golf course to our right and trees to our left. Because I was to the left of him, I would always look at the golfers playing golf as we walked by.
“Sooo?” he said expecting a immediate answer.
“Sooo…what?” I replied, having no idea what he was trying to say.
      “Ehh…never mind.”
      “What ever..”
We walked on, passing three more large homes before reaching my driveway.
“Well..see ya in a few,” I yelled as I walked up my long driveway.
      “Ok..See ya!”

Several hours passed while I prepared the wooded section of the campsite. We always camped in the same place. There was a nearby stream that we could hear in the background. Five very large trees surrounded us creating a circle. A burn scar is still visible from the other camping trips. I rushed down into the darkness of my unfinished basement to go get the camping supplies out. The only problem, the tent was too big and heavy for me to carry. It was like trying to carry an elephant on your back and walking up twenty flights of stairs. It was not fun. When I was finally outside with everything I called Jorryn and tell him to come over. I was so excited my heart could have broken out of my skin and punched someone in the face.

We started to make our way back to the house, which was only one hundred yards away, through the thick brush and thorns. I started to wonder if we could get the stuff through all that.
At the house, we first grabbed the box the tent was in, and it still felt like an elephant carcass was in there. However, we managed to get it to the spot. This was the first step to a glorious night.
Once the camp was all set up, Jorryn spent about ten minutes deciding where to put the stuff. First he wanted the tent in the bush, which was crazy, I thought. Then, he wanted it in front of the bush. I thought that was good, but he changed his mind. Again he finally decided on putting the tent next to the near by tree facing the bush. We then started to set the supplies up around the area to make a perimeter of our territory.

Once the sun had set and my parents left us, we were getting all ready to tell ghost stories, the typical thing people did when they go camping.
“Ok, there was a murder where a lady was accused of being a witch and was drowned in that lake,” he said with a serious tone. “Just before she died she vowed to kill the children or the grandchildren of those who had killed her”
I knew where this was going, I told myself.
“Anyway,” he said. “She is seen walking across the lake at night eating squirrels and birds.”
“Oh please,” I said in disappointment. “That’s as made up as a dragon in a tropical jungle.”
“Hey you never know,” Jorryn said laughing.
We both laughed, making fun of ourselves, coming up with crazy events that wouldn’t happen in a million years. Suddenly, in the mist of our laughing we heard a branch snap. We looked at each other and then looked at the ground with terror in our eyes. Then we said it was a deer or some other type of animal.
“Ugh, man that scared the hell out of me!” Jorryn said laughing.
“Ya,” I said, still recovering from the fear attack.
“You do it?” I asked with a slur of speech.
I looked away to make sure that nothing was there, just to clear any thought of a monster being there. I turned back to look at Jorryn and he wasn’t there. I assumed this was some sort of prank to scare me. I started to walk around the perimeter of the camp site with my heart in my throat and sweat running down my face.
“Hey Jorryn, you can come out now.” I said frightened. I started to get a headache and feel lightheaded from the excitement I thought I was experiencing.
I heard another twig snap, figuring he was nearby. I could scare him back, I told myself. I crouched myself just in front of the tent so he wouldn’t see me. My heart pumped so hard, and I hoped he wouldn’t hear it. Then I started to hear footsteps coming towards the tent. I knew this was the ultimate scare. I had a big smile on my face as I jumped out from behind the tent, and then everything went blank.
