      ZBrush Fun

Has anyone here played around with ZBrush? I've known about it for awhile but decided to get the trial a few days ago. I barely understand any of it (2.5d wtf?) except for basic sculpting and Zspheres but it's still a lot of fun.

It's like clay except I don't suck at it.

      First thing I made.

Some kind of desert canine me thinks.

And a fat guy with suspiciously undefined hands and feet.

      Anyone else?

So you make one side and then it mirrors over? It looks pretty good.

I used symmetry for those particular ones, which makes it a lot easier to create static models. You're free to just work freehand though.

You can do the same in 3D Studio Max, it's called Lathe.

Anyway, is it hard to work with ZBrush? I mean, it sounds like you made those models pretty fast and easily, but that kind of stuff would require quite some time in 3DStudio Max.

Cool. There is a sculpting tool in Blender as well. Most likely not as good as this one, but comparable. Probably takes longer too.

What did you start with, when you began sculpting? Did you create a low poly model first?

Well I can't comment on Zbrush's texturing or rendering processes, but the modeling is pretty straight forward.

Here's a vid of a guy working with it; dunno if it's anything like lathe (which I've never used)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaUZgEu8W34 (Demon guy that influenced my first model)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El_2j...eature=related (pretty simple but shows off how it works)

To Bonsay: The first two I just had a sphere and then mushed it around until I had the face. The neck area was getting really stretched looking though doing just that. The third one I used Zspheres and made a really simple skeleton, then made the guy over it.

      Here's an example of lathe:

      First you "draw" a 2D shape, called a line/spline.

Then you apply the lathe modifier.

      Then render with cool material.

Ah I see, I've used tools like that in more CAD type programs (Although I always heard it referred to as revolve). I was thinking Lathe was some side program for Studio Max or something

(Blaragh my trial's running down, but I've got no time to use it with a research paper due soon

Oh, I see. Lathe is useful for a lot of things.

I made some shiny bullets with it

Anyway, I might download ZBrush sometime later and check it out. Sounds kinda interesting, despite it also sounds limited at some points.

Well, from what I know about it, it's mostly used as a sculpting/texturing tool in CGI developement (or whatever it's called in general). So for that it's probably one of the best.
